"A federal judge on Wednesday ruled that the personal safety of an Aspen man expected to serve prison time for allegedly leading a cocaine operation here could be jeopardized by his cooperation with federal investigators.
U.S. District Judge Marcia Krieger vacated the August sentencing date of Wayne Reid, 65, and reset it to Nov. 15. The extension will let Reid complete testimony against the remaining defendants in the case, a court filing says, and allow prosecutor Michelle Korver to better evaluate the “full measure” of his assistance to authorities ahead of sentencing.
“The request to continue Mr. Reid’s sentencing, however, is based on other factors, as well,” Korver wrote in her filing. “Most importantly, there are several significant security concerns affecting cooperating defendants when they begin their term of incarceration at a [federal] Bureau of Prisons facility and are then later brought back to the sentencing district to testify....”

Local attorney Sherry Caloia has entered the race against Martin Beeson for the 9th Judicial District Attorney seat. Caloia was instrumental in getting Beeson petition eligible and elected in his coup over Colleen Truden roughly eight years ago. Information confirmed on Sec of State website.
Good luck to both candidates.

"Ninth Judicial District Attorney Martin Beeson appears to be eligible to run for re-election, based on an opinion from the Colorado Attorney General’s office, but his candidacy could end up in the courts.......
.........Once he is certified, opponents have five days to challenge his place on the ballot in Denver district court.
Tom Silverman, a defense attorney in Glenwood Springs who is a former deputy DA, municipal judge and prosecutor, has considered challenging Beeson’s eligibility but has made no decisions. He added that he expects it will be challenged in court by someone.
Silverman argues that there is no legal precedent regarding the attorney general’s opinion.
“The attorney general opinion is not binding on any court,” Silverman wrote in an email. “It also was not written for this situation, it dealt with appointed DAs and has never been accepted by any court.”
Silverman added that as a conservative, Beeson would typically take a position that courts should strictly construe the law. The state constitution in this case says the top prosecutor is not eligible to hold the office, he said.
“Strict construction is not convenient so Beeson is going with ‘judicial legislation,’ or ‘legislating from the bench,’ hoping the court will say that the two-term limitation strictly stated is not what the constitutional amendment means. ... His first elected term of three years should not count because it wasn’t four years,” Silverman wrote. “That construction is nowhere in the amendment.”...." (Read more? Click title)

Sullivan, 76, having served his third 15-day term for giving people free rides in his cab that aren’t actually free, said he was tired of the oppression of his people.
Minister Louis Farrakhan visited Sullivan in jail, and praised him as a “freedom fighter who has birthed new meaning for the word ‘free.’” Farrakhan reported the beleaguered taxi driver is in good spirits despite The Man continuing to try to keep him down.
“La ilah illa Allah, Muhammad rasoolu Allah,” Sullivan said in a jailhouse interview over a shrimp cocktail and just before inmate massage time at Aspen’s soul-destroying gulag..."

Your tax-funded bureaucrats can do more than buy land and reject subdivisions, it turns out. On Wednesday they picked up one man’s fight to improve the allegedly crappy cell phone service at his home near the roundabout.
Dan Levinson, of Maroon Drive, addressed the Pitkin County commissioners Wednesday, detailing a nine-plus-month battle with AT&T. He said last June the company’s service in his ’hood went out ... and he hasn’t been able to get any answers since as to what happened out there.
“The only thing I could think of is to come to you,” he told the county board.
That afternoon, county manager Jon Peacock was on the phone with AT&T asking what was up with the dead zone.
When ZG called AT&T and spoke with a regional spokesman the next day, she already knew all about Mr. Levinson’s Kafkae-sque struggle to get a signal and the county’s top executive’s effort on his behalf.
But, she said, his service might not get better any time soon. There’s no tower down in the area, apparently, and none of their local service infrastructure has changed.
“We understand his frustration and we are doing everything we can to resolve this issue,” she said.

If the FBI is investigating the sheriff’s department, and maybe even Aspen’s local government, for its behavior over the last four decades, maybe they could help me out. I lost a bindle, a pair of Rossi 102 Stratos and a girlfriend somewhere in Aspen during the 1970s. I think I left the skis in the rack at The Little Nell and the girlfriend at Andre’s, but only for a minute. Or was it the Paragon? The Pantry? I guess I can’t remember, exactly. But I do recall the girl was pretty as hell and that the Rossis could rip the Face of Bell. And I honestly thought the blow was legal. I mean, it wasn’t even addictive back then. Was it? Is it still?..."

"It’s Christmas Eve in Aspen. The town is like a magical snow globe filled with miniature hundred dollar bills as snowflakes, and everybody is giddy with anticipation of what Santa may or may not be bringing them. The goose is fat, the trees are trimmed, the stockings are hung and the slopes are groomed to perfection. The streets are choked with Range Rovers and private jets are swarming like mosquitoes, but their occupants are a bit nervous about flaunting their riches in Aspen this year. Fret not. We’re ultra tolerant here in Aspen — wealth doesn’t impress or even faze (most of) us; some actually find it boring. If you’re worried about sticking out like a sore thumb and really want to look like a local, I have a solution for you: Don’t shave, and put duct tape on your gloves and ski outfit..."

The Aspen Daily News is the only locally owned and operated print news in The Valley.
One of the reasons they come in as the local's fav is because their staff not only has a pulse, they're in tune with the folks. Most of the time.
"...Losing ESPN’s Winter X Games would be a tragedy for this community that we hope never comes to pass, but we don’t see any reason why it should. We have faith ESPN realizes that the town, the Aspen Skiing Co. and Buttermilk are the perfect hosts for the annual action-sports spectacular. We hope that the fact that we are heading into this January’s event without a contract to keep the games here past 2012 is simply a matter of ironing out the details.
Back in 2002, when the event first came to Aspen, just 36,000 people gathered at the base of Buttermilk over four days. Attendance has been on a steady upward trajectory since then, shattering records last season with more than 114,000 spectators.
The growing popularity of the event is no accident. First and foremost, the athletes who continually push their sports to new and eye-popping limits deserve credit. But a host of talented and passionate people both from ESPN, Aspen Skiing Co. and countless other organizations put the games on their shoulders every year, and the event keeps getting better.
The X Games breathed a new life into this community for which we are grateful. The event has introduced a new generation to Aspen that might have otherwise passed us over, fearing the media-constructed elitist vibe. However, there’s nothing quite like the X Games to show the true, fun-loving ski town heart of this place.
To be clear, we have scoured the North American resort landscape and we can’t think of a place better suited than Aspen to host the X Games. Where else can a resort operator hand over an entire mountain to the games? Where else can all the events be seen from one centrally located base area? And try finding the nightlife potential Aspen provides in Utah or the Canadian Rockies...."

"...ZG knew it all along. Despite the warm community feeling of the local Rotary Club’s Ducky Derby, and all the great causes it supports, there is no way you can dump all that plastic into the river and expect to get every duck back. And sure enough, during a recent “river walk” from Rio Grande Park to Cemetery Lane, ZG observed about a half-dozen of the ducks stuck in various places along the banks.
The goal of the derby is to sponsor the duck that crosses the finish line first and cash in on the $10,000 award, but ZG wonders what prize awaits him if he brings a duck back from an upcoming trip to Lake Powell..."

SandBox Comments: Aspen Daily News "ZG makes an impact by keeping it local"
"You can’t believe everything in print, ZG was reminded the other day when he came across a flyer urging people to buy local.
Dubbed the 350project.net, the flyer suggests that even if half of the U.S. population spent $50 a month with independently-owned businesses, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue.
For every $100 spent with locally-owned businesses, $68 is returned to the local economy, the flyer suggests. If people spent that in a national chain, only $43 stays in the community.
There’s no doubt in ZG’s mind that that’s true but he finds it curious how a couple of the businesses’ logos on the back of the flyer wound up there since they aren’t as “local” as they appear.
The Aspen Times and Glenwood Post Independent are owned by national newspaper chain Swift Communications, based in Reno, Nev. While the chain employs dozens of mightily talented people in the valley, there are many more who work outside of here who produce the ads, print the paper and keep the profits.
Just a reminder that it’s a $25 difference when choosing between a nationally-owned chain and the “little guy....” (Aspen Daily)
Here's the thing.
There are some very good writers up on The Aspen Times. And a couple of good columnists down on The Glenwood Springs Post Independent.
But, the real problem with Swift owned publications in The Roaring Fork Valley is they have proven time and time again, that they're not aiming to be a local newspaper.
The Times does a far better job of integrating into the area than the PI does.
Both still have the same cookie-cutter style stories that are passed around not just between them but around the loop of all Swift publications in Colorado.
There is also a determined vein of tabloid style gonzo journalism. You can't believe..what you read in print.
As long as there are two newspapers in Aspen, they'll both be read. But only one will be subscribed to and that is The Aspen Daily News.
As long as it's free in Glenwood Springs, folks will read the PI. Bring us competition that's a better publication and loyalty will move right on over.
