"I began writing columns in 1995 after listening to the consternation about the business climate in Snowmass Village, or the lack thereof. My first column proposed the idea of moving all the businesses in the Snowmass Mall to the then unconstructed Base Village, and my second column was about replacing the mall businesses with casinos. It was sheer arrogance and brilliance — a great way to start a writing career — and everyone hated it. Go figure.
I remain convinced that casinos are the best idea to transform the economy of Snowmass Village into a sustainable year-round resort. For some reason this bright idea is resisted by the politicians, the second homeowners and the citizenry. Something about attracting the wrong clientele.
I submit that if we can entertain the titan thieves of Wall Street, we can surely put up with a few skuzzy dudes ripping off cigarettes at the liquor store. My original column even mentioned the darker aspects of casinos by using the line, “If the Mafia gets involved, it will give a whole new meaning to ‘family resort.’” A thief is a thief, whether by briefcase or gun...." After more than 50 meetings with a variety of entities the past six months, Steamboat Springs resident Steve Hofman said Monday the time to present to the public information for an Indian gaming facility in Hayden is approaching.
“We have understood from the very beginning that not only would the opportunity for public comment and input be appropriate, but essential,” Hofman said. “We fully anticipate having those discussions and having the public ask questions we believe we have answers to, and if they ask questions we don’t have answers to, then we’re going to be obligated to get them answers.
“That’s been our approach through this entire process.”......"

"The Ute Mountain Ute tribe is abuzz with both hope and concern about how to spend a $43 million windfall stemming from a recent court settlement.
Since news broke that the Ute Mountain Utes would receive $42.6 million as a part of a $1 billion settlement with the federal government over the mismanagement of tribal money and trust lands, tribal leaders have held several meetings to discuss different options for the money. Meetings were held this week in Towaoc and Ignacio.
The Ute Mountain Utes are among 41 Native American tribes set to receive cash from the settlement, which was announced April 11.
Chatter about the money quickly fanned out across Twitter and Facebook after the announcement. And tribal members began circulating petitions and proposals outlining how the money should be distributed.
One proposal shared with The Durango Herald offers a three-pronged approach for distributing the money. It suggests splitting a portion of the money equally among tribal members, putting a portion back into the tribal organization and investing the rest.

Casino development has been talked about in Glenwood Springs, Snowmass Village and is happening out in Dinosaur.
Maybe, because Steamboat Springs is rapidly becoming a better revenue generating ski destination than Aspen...the Crown Family will finally give serious consideration to the Snowmass Village concept.
They even have the shell already in place. Base Village.

"Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs Olympian Johnny Spillane and four local business partners are exploring the viability of building a casino, hotel and entertainment venue on land near Yampa Valley Regional Airport.
The partnership faces many hurdles along the way, including winning the support of surrounding communities, finding an American Indian tribe to work with, jumping through the federal regulatory hoops and getting approval from the governor.
“We’re still definitely in the process of gathering information,” said Steve Hofman, one of the group’s partners. “If we reach the point that we say that the project’s not viable, we’ll say that.”
Spillane discussed the idea Thursday with Hofman, a Steamboat resident who spent much of his career in Washington, D.C., and was a U.S. assistant secretary of labor under former President George H. W. Bush.
Meetings have been held with business leaders and council members in Hayden, Craig and Steamboat, with the goal of soliciting feedback before plans went “too far down the road,” Spillane said.
“We’re going out of our way to do this slowly and to do this right,” he said...."
