"BASALT, Colo. -- A former Basalt High School teacher having sex with a student has agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors.
Under the agreement, Lauren Redfern, 26, pleaded guilty to one count of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Two counts of Sexual Assault on a Minor by a Person in a Position of Trust were dropped.
The charges comes after she and the 18-year-old student were allegedly caught having sex in her office bathroom at the school in February. According to the Aspen Time, both Redfern and the victim told authorities they had sex when he was 17, as well.
The Times also reports the victim told authorities he "pursued" Redfern romantically and that the couple called off their relationship until he graduated.

SandBox Comments: Aspen Times "Plea for respect, compassion from BHS"

"Over the past few weeks there have been many articles written by community members expressing opinions regarding the recent “scandal” at Basalt High School. As the editor of the BHS newspaper, The Longhorn Roundup, I feel it is important that the feelings and emotions at Basalt High are shared, as well.
The past few weeks have not been easy for anyone who stepped foot into BHS. It seemed as if oppressive gray clouds loomed over our halls and classrooms. There were no local newspapers to be found at BHS because students came to school early to collect such papers and dispose of them before they could be read by students. This speaks volumes because at any high school gossip rules the halls, but after this incident our students felt a need to defend and protect our school and the student and teacher involved.
“I didn't want everyone to be reading the stories in class and making it an awkward situation for anyone who was close to both parties,” said Carina Capobianco, a member of the BHS girls basketball team. “Coach Redfern was a big role model in my life, and even after all that has happened I still look up to her because I know that not everyone is perfect.”
Students at BHS are very sensitive about this situation and are very defensive of their school. A former student of BHS made a derogatory comment about the situation on Facebook. She was bombarded with 45 comments in defense of BHS and the student involved.
It is important that this issue does not reflect on our school as a whole or on our student body. Students feel that the actions of two people should not define the character of the 400-plus members of BHS. We have received snide comments and gestures from other schools in the valley. We ask for respect...."

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Redfern's case should not be prosecuted as ‘assault'"
One doesn't have to form an opinion or pass judgement on Lauren Redfern to engage in the controversy surrounding her arrest.
It's good to see Niki Delson step up and voice an opinion that is being widely talked about regarding Redfern. There are many aspects of what Delson is saying that make sense and ring true.
Niki Delson:
"Sexual abuser. Sexual assault. Child molester. Pedophile. Sex offender.
These words grab our attention, inflame our sensibilities and conjure up images of an innocent victim and predatory offender. We visualize a Jerry Sandusky creating a nonprofit agency to gain access to a helpless child, a priest violating a young boy, a father fondling his daughter, a man creating an online persona in order to gain sexual access to an underage girl.
But should we place a teacher who has a sexual relationship with one of her students in the same category?
The language we use to talk about sexual abuse shapes our conversation and our understanding.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health defines sexual assault as “any type of sexual activity that you do not agree to, including: Inappropriate touching, penetration, sexual intercourse that you say ‘no' to, rape or attempted rape, and child molestation.”
Sexual assault is not consensual. It demeans and diminishes the child victim when the law uses the words “sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust” to describe both the actions of a priest raping a prepubescent child and the actions of a 25-year-old teacher engaged in consensual sexual activity with an almost 18-year-old student. Having watched Lauren grow up, this is a painful to watch story for 'SandBox Nanny'. Her heart and her thoughts go out to her and her family. Who at one time, also reached out to ours.
The best advice she can give to Lauren is to tell the truth and no matter how hard or unfair and out of balance the rest of the world gets as you go through this; do not back down from that.
It may take a long, long time to get the truth told but especially do not allow anyone in power to distort that truth while you work your way to the end.
There will be minimal to no further coverage on SandBoxBlogs of Lauren's story. Comment ability will also remain blocked.
