"As most Colorado ski areas sloshed through a tough season of historically low snow levels, Powderhorn Mountain Resort received a boost in business this winter and is working to secure funding to enhance both winter and summer activities.
That was the positive report issued by Andy Daly, a member of Powderhorn’s new ownership group looking to build upon a series of upgrades it made upon acquiring the resort last August.
“The last two or three owners, their focus has been on real estate. Our team has a passion for skiing,” Daly told Mesa County commissioners Monday during a segment of their meeting when business owners are invited to share the status of their industry with the board.
Daly, one of four managing partners along with Ken, Tom and John Gart, told commissioners Powderhorn’s total skier days grew 7 percent during the 2011–12 season over the previous year. That bucked the statewide trend of a 7 percent decline, according to Colorado Ski Country USA.
Coming off that strong showing, Powderhorn has turned its focus to enhancing what it has to offer in the next year or so. The resort has received a Colorado Housing and Finance Authority grant and is contemplating other ways to obtain financing to expanding its snowmaking capabilities and upgrade its lifts....."

Former top guy at Vail Resort, Andy Daly has taken Powderhorn (in just one season) into the upper rankings of ski destinations in Western Colorado. Now aiming for year round access, local families are looking forward to what comes next.

"MESA, Colo.- Powderhorn's first year under new ownership is coming to a close this weekend. After a long winter, that looked bleak for snow for a long time, General Manager Daren Cole said, "We've been extremely happy with the delivery we've been able to put out there to the community."
Powderhorn was purchased by Andy Daly as well as Tom and Ken Gart last summer at auction for $1.4 million. Since then, there have been numerous improvements at the resort, including the construction of a new deck at base lodge, renovations at the Sunset Grill and the addition of a tubing hill.
In addition to the renovations, many people are thrilled with riding conditions. Season pass holder Steve Sweat said, "Being under new management, they've done a really good job grooming this year. The snow depth hasn't been any issue here. The grooming has made up for it tremendously."..."

They have more snow base than some of the big guys do this year.

"While many of the state’s central mountain resorts are making snow and scraping by with less snowfall than they’d like, Grand Junction’s backyard ski resort, Powderhorn Mountain Resort, is experiencing a relatively good start to the skiing season.
“We have noticed people who are from this area who would normally go to Crested Butte or Aspen; we have them skiing here,” Powderhorn spokeswoman Tricia Tittle said.
Powderhorn reported a 32-inch base Thursday, which is tied with Eldora Mountain Resort for the fifth-thickest base at a ski resort in Colorado. Purgatory Ski Area reported a 34-inch base, Echo Mountain had a 40-inch base, Silverton Mountain boasted a 47-inch base, and Wolf Creek Ski Area remains the snowiest resort with a 53-inch base, according to Colorado Ski Country USA.
Many skiers and snow lovers may be reminiscing about the early, heavy snowfall of 2010 that opened resorts with a swoosh.
Even this year, Aspen-Snowmass opened five days early thanks to a good dumping of snow, but the base at Aspen Mountain since has withered to 19 inches as of Thursday. Aspen Highlands reported a 22-inch base....."

"...Grading criteria includes not developing undisturbed lands and protecting endangered species, protecting watersheds, conserving energy with investments in renewable energy, as well as limiting expansion of snow making.
