"Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, energized supporters at a K.P. Kauffman Co. drill site outside Ft. Lupton on Wednesday when he denounced the solar and wind focus of the Obama administration and dug in deep with his call for increased domestic production of oil and gas.

Romney, who four years ago was the presidential choice of Republicans in the state before John McCain won the nomination, was well received at the drill site at a privately-owned local company founded by Kevin Kauffman some 30 years ago “with $100 on the kitchen table, an idea and a dream.”

In a state laden with oil and gas — and a populace split between wanting to see more development but also concerned with environmental hazards — Romney’s comments were interpreted under a political guise. His campaign released a list of press accounts beforehand that sought to prove their point about Obama’s failing energy policies. Headlines from some of the stories they forwarded emphasized that gas prices have more than doubled from when Obama was sworn into office. Other abbreviated media reports jabbed the president for his focus on wind and solar power at the expense of oil and gas production and exploration.

David Lauter, Washington Bureau:
"Over the next eight months, presidential campaigns will spend hundreds of millions of dollars to penetrate the suburban living rooms of people like 33-year-old Sarah Hays.

"I agree with certain parts of the philosophies of both parties," Hays said in a recent interview as two of her three children — ages 6, 4 and 21 months — played within reach at their St. Louis-area home. "I'm a Catholic, and I'm pro-life, and that's very important to me," she said, "but I don't believe that pro-life means only antiabortion.

"I think we should be fiscally conservative, and yet I think we should take care of people."

Hays is that rarest of people in a closely divided and sharply polarized country — a swing voter — dissatisfied with both parties, crucial to either one's hope of success.

Over the last few months, as the Republican primary battle has focused on the most conservative parts of the party's core, several polls have shown President Obama making headway with self-described independents like Hays. Detect a slight tone of skepticism as Obama declares himself "a warrior for the working class" here in Colorado?

"President Barack Obama brought the campaign for his jobs bill to a sun-drenched parking lot outside Abraham Lincoln High School in southwest Denver on Tuesday.

Calling himself a “warrior for the working class,” a peppy Obama repeatedly urged Republicans in Congress to “pass the bill,” a $447 million proposal he said combines tax cuts for working families and small businesses with increased spending on infrastructure and government jobs, including teachers..."
