SandBoxBlogs: Vail Daily "Lindsey Vonn rocks on"

Our own Lindsey Vonn takes another giant step forward.  Yes, we would have to say that the kids are doing OK.

John LaConte:
"VAIL, Colorado — Ski Girls Rock received a boon from a true rock star of the ski world Sunday when Lindsey Vonn visited the program and skied with some of its participants.

Hosted by Vail Resorts, the opportunity to ski with Vonn was part of a celebration titled “Welcome Home Lindsey,” where the four-time World Cup overall winner was welcomed back here to her hometown in true rock-star fashion — by hundreds of screaming fans.

But for a few young Vonn followers, the homecoming party was more of an apres ski session, with the fun part of the day coming earlier.

On Sunday morning, a selection of roughly 10 girls from around the world joined Vonn for a few turns on the Nastar course at Vail Mountain's Black Forest Race Arena. Seven-year-old Michaela Landry was first in the gates to ski alongside Vonn, Landry in the yellow course with her hero alongside her on the green.

“We came here just for this,” said Barbara Landry, from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as her daughter Michaela skied the course. “It's so nice to have somebody like (Vonn) so involved and wanting to see girls succeed in the sport.”

Designed by Vonn herself, Ski Girls Rock lessons involve groups of no more than four girls ages 5 to 15 and are led by female instructors who “focus not only on improving skiing skills but empowering girls through the sport and creating opportunities to bond and build confidence along with developing teamwork and social skills,” according to Vail Resorts....." SandBoxBlogs: Vail Daily "Next year's Vail Resorts Epic Pass on sale"

This is just such a great marketing idea.  We're impressed with it every Spring.

To give a super deal on their signature Epic Pass for the upcoming season, before the current season is even over; not only gives locals a huge financial break it helps tourism dollars and the overall financial health of the Vail community.

Small businesses can see into the future a little bit easier so that they can plan ahead and in the off-chance the upcoming season turns out to be a dry one; skier visits being down takes less of a toll.

And the best part?  For only a $49 down payment you have until September to pay the balance.  Such a deal!

SandBox Comments: Summit Daily News "Kirkwood reacts to its new ‘sugar daddy'"

Adam Jensen, Tahoe Daily Tribune:

"The resort's big lines and big snow totals are unique among the region's mountains, and its acquisition will add “a totally different experience” to Vail Resorts' portfolio in the area, said Blaise Carrig, co-president of VR.

Online reactions to the announcement have been split, with some bemoaning the corporation's purchase and saying Kirkwood will never be the same. The possibility of crowding at the resort is on the minds of some, while others said they think the change in ownership will bring much-needed improvements to the resort. Many wondered about specific pass and ticket options, and whether lift ticket prices will jump.

“I've got mixed emotions,” said professional skier Josh Daiek, who calls Kirkwood home. “I think there's going to be some really good things that happen. But I'm also a little apprehensive about what's going to happen to the core of Kirkwood.”

Daiek's sister, professional snowboarder Rose Marie Daiek, had similar feelings about Wednesday's announcement.

“I think Kirkwood needs a sugar daddy,” Rose Marie Daiek said. “But I love it for being kind of hoopty, kind of small. I hope it doesn't blow up.

“I just really hope that the Kirkwood family that's been working there for years and years is taken care of, that's a big concern....”  (Read more?  Click title)

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Barbara Lucks: Could a town run on a corporate model?"

Again, well spotted by Barbara Lucks.  Up on the Snowmass Sun.

Turn Snowmass Village into a model of corporate Vail and break it completely away from the brand of Aspen.

You betcha  it would work.

"...The only way to preserve things that are important to the locals is to quit acting like the place is Crested Butte.

Let's get real about the impact of major redevelopment projects in dense commercial districts. Yes, they absolutely will affect neighboring businesses. The best anyone can do is minimize the impact.

If Snowmass is fortunate enough to continue to attract investors who have the money and drive to upgrade an aging hotel, least of all revitalize a stalled-out concrete jungle, the locals are going to have to quit whining and learn how to effectively negotiate with the big boys.

Snowmass Village has never been a quiet little mountain town. It was sired by corporations and remains true to its blood — or lack thereof. It may be time for the Vail model. Snowmass is well staffed for it...."

SandBox Comments: Summit County Citizens Voice "Breckenridge ski area celebrates 50 years of skiing"

"Breckenridge ski area’s 50th anniversary will be marked by community celebrations and a resort marketing blitz, but skiing has deep roots in the Summit County town that predate the sport’s commercial era by at least 100 years.

The first people to slide about the local mountains on skis weren’t in it for the money. Father John Dyer moved to Breckenridge in 1862, and for Dyer, skiing was essential to his spiritual mission, as he commuted to Alma and Leadville on Norwegian snowshoes spread the word of God...."
