Maybe that $20K saved this year will go direct to the local Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and Feed My Sheep!
How soon this community forgets certain scandals brought about by certain powerful individuals. How long ago was it that the grant fund was run dry by GSCRA and the city had to step in? Two years now?
The point, is that fireworks in Glenwood Springs should be privately funded and the city budget not dipped to cover the costs. This works out, at $20,000 to over $1,200 per minute.
With record unemployment, record homeless and hungry and still struggling after nearly 5 years of a local economy that is still dragging itself back up; the City of Glenwood Springs has no business wasting money on fireworks nor should crucial tourism marketing dollars be used to fund the display.
At least now, in the year 2012, $20,000 will not be wasted.
Say NO fireworks directly to your councilman and be sure to vote NO in the PI's online poll.

"GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — The city of Glenwood Springs may join Aspen in canceling its Fourth of July fireworks display next month due to the extreme high fire danger.
“As a result of discussions between myself and the fire chief, and an inquiry from the mayor about whether we should have them or not, it is on the agenda for our meeting next Thursday,” Glenwood Springs City Manager Jeff Hecksel said.
Glenwood Springs City Council will formally discuss a possible cancellation of the fireworks display at its June 21 regular meeting.
Meanwhile, Gov. John Hickenlooper on Thursday signed an executive order banning the use of private fireworks and open burning statewide because of the dry conditions throughout Colorado...."

Just take a look at the signatures on this letter. When are Glenwood Springs City Councilman Stephen Bersheyni and Leo McKinney up for election?
I have no problem at all if they wish to sign something like this as individuals but unless it was authorized by the city and council for them to sign on our behalf as a community then they are acting inappropriately. They are not in office to make personal political statements.

"Throughout the United States, government and quasi-government bodies are chipping away at private property rights. This is exemplified in western Colorado by property acquisitions of the Roaring Fork Transit Authority (RFTA) to build new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations. The town of Basalt and city of Glenwood Springs endorsed RFTA's tactic of condemning private parcels within their municipal limits to advance the $46.2 million BRT project.
In the Glenwood Springs instance, RFTA claimed that a strict deadline attached to a $25 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration meant a competing private use proposed for the property needed to be quickly quashed.
Through their support, the message from local leaders is loud and clear: It's more important to help RFTA spend taxpayer dollars than secure the rights of private property owners.
The founders of our nation believed the right of citizens to acquire and possess property is as unalienable as the right to free speech. Thomas Jefferson declared, “All power is inherent in the people. … They are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of press.”
Secure private property rights are a cornerstone of economic growth and sustainability in a free market economy. Our government is responsible for upholding laws, contracts, patents and copyrights to protect private property owners from infringement by others, including government itself...."

"I cannot believe that our city council has agreed with RFTA to condemn Wayne Rudd's building on South Glen Avenue if a sale agreement does not work out.
Condemnation is nothing shy of communism just like when the Re-1 school district took the True Value building.
It is wrong on every level of democracy. It is no different than if someone knocked on your door and said, “I want to buy your house,” and you say, “It is not for sale,” and they say, “OK, then we will just condemn it and take it away from you.”
In that sense, I bet everyone out there feels that is stealing, and totally wrong.
But as soon as it is a public agency or government agency doing it, it's OK. Hogwash, it is still wrong. Are there no other options for a bus station elsewhere?..." (Read more? Click title)

Finally, some information that no one can dispute regarding how protracted the development and governmental leadership processes are in Glenwood Springs.

SandBox Comments: Grand Junction Daily Sentinel "Public offered some ice time at new Grand Junction rink"

"The Grand Valley Skating Center will begin limited public skate times this weekend for people interested in learning more about what the new rink has to offer.
The outdoor rink at 1130 N. Third St. has been open to league hockey and learn-to-skate members since Nov. 19.
“It’s been a huge success so far, especially for our learn-to-skate classes,” said Curt Maki, executive director for Ice Skating Inc., the nonprofit organization that runs the rink.
Interest in public skate times has been high, said Ken Walter, president of Ice Skating Inc...."
When Grand Junction was putting together the concept of an outdoor ice rink, locals in the 81601 tourism and attractions marketing district sent out the cry for what a terrific idea that is.
The case they presented in commentary through numerous regional hubs and forums was that in Glenwood Springs we would not be as constrained as Junction because we already have an indoor ice rink over at the Community Center that serves sporting venues.
The ideas were terrific.
Two Rivers Park could handle an outdoor venue for the general public. Think Rockefeller Center in NY.
Tastefully done, well lit with seasonal ability. Up on the I-70 side so that it would be visible to passing traffic year-round. Lots of parking and space for events, even if the city and county ever get off the dime and implement even a few of the suggestions for improving Two Rivers Park into revenue generating venues.
And here's the funny thing.
The whole thing could be paid for with lottery proceeds that fund Parks and Rec.
How did the sitting council at the time meet the concept? With a yawn. How did our local newspaper keep the voices raised and heard? They didn't. Instead, they blocked voices and prevented the sharing of dialog.
What a shame that locals now have another reason to head west.
Besides minor league baseball they can now afford to take the family ice-skating in a beautiful outdoor venue.

The commentary around the region is now going on aprx. five years with complaints, grumbling and visible angst from the folks who want to hear the state of the city from the leaders they vote in or pay the salaries of.
Here's to the beginning of a new era of public relations in Glenwood Springs.
SandBox Nanny can't imagine any of us not appreciating calm voices of true leadership releasing fully accurate and fully truthful information to the folks.
