".S. Rep. Scott Tipton is waiting to hear constituent feedback on legislation protecting the Thompson Divide before taking a position on a proposed draft bill, he said at the GOP headquarters in Aspen on Saturday.
The draft bill, introduced by U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado over two weeks ago, could lead to enhanced conservation of the Thompson Divide area near Carbondale and retirement of gas-drilling leases there. The senator has posted the draft on his website and invited the public to comment in the hopes it can lead to common ground between drilling opponents and gas companies holding leases.
“As he gets public comment I’m hoping that he will be sharing some of that with us,” said Tipton, who represents Aspen and the rest of Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District in Washington, adding that he isn’t familiar with the details of the draft bill. “But we’ll see what ultimately he’ll be looking at.”
The proposal would withdraw unleased minerals on public lands in the area from future lease sales, essentially protecting them from oil and gas development. It explicitly states it would preserve existing rights of gas leaseholders, but it also states the feds would, within 180 days of passage of the bill, provide “opportunity for donation, voluntary exchange, or other relinquishment of those rights for retirement.”...."

The spearheads for a few of the same groups that have joined Mary Noone in the push for public tax dollars to purchase private lands and 'preserve' them.

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Deny Carbondale's request for energy impact funds"
Excellent idea from Sharon Brenner this morning. Here on the Glenwood Springs Post Independent.

"I am wondering why Carbondale thinks it should get energy impact funds for its new library, especially since the town is doing all it can to fight natural gas drilling in the area. The town itself is responsible for adding significant additional costs to the construction of the library. It is retirees and trust funders who have moved to Carbondale that are driving the need for a larger library — not energy company employees. I urge the Garfield County commissioners to deny the town's request.
Just out of curiosity, if the library were oriented to take advantage of solar heating (windows) in the morning and winter, and shaded in the afternoon during the summer, how much would be saved by not installing solar panels and the accompanying controls? How long will it take to recover the costs of the solar panels?

What say you?
Are you weary of Glenwood Springs City Councilman Leo McKinney's claims that he and fellow council members are 'the voice of the people of Glenwood Springs' ? Especially when it comes to all of his political manifestos such as MMJ, the response to Katrina, CIRC and the "Strawberry Days Massacre", illegal immigration, plastic bags and water bottles and just about every national political hot topic that comes down the pike?
The great news is that he's up for re-elect next year and you can remove him from office.
Gamba and GarCo BOCC are right. Traffic is a non-issue.
The only thing more denigrating to the people of GarCo than the fear-mongering that Thompson Divide Coalition is whipping into a witch burning frenzy aimed at the gas and oil drilling industry are the politicians who condone that kind of political statement and do so under the false banner of being the voice of the people.
Here's an 'anonymous' tip for you, Leo.
Go online and google up the instructions on how to set-up mass email. Then solicit 'the voices of Glenwood Springs' for anyone interested in giving you an email address that they are willing to communicate with you from.
Then.....instead of stealth confiscating their voices....just simply ask them for their opinion.
It's a new and brave world out here.
Come to think of it, how tough would it be for all councilman and commissioners to do same?
Just say NO to the Thompson Divide Coalition and say YES to environmentally conscious EnCana, SG Interests and Antero.

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Never in anyone's backyard"

"A March 1 Post Independent headline couldn't escape my eyes: “Oak Meadows residents alarmed about gas drilling.” And on Feb. 28, I read where the proposed asphalt plant owners were not going to be permitted to use their property to operate their plant beside the organic farm.
First, I submit I haven't been here long enough to know details on either topic. I don't know which side I would support on either topic. I do know that I would entertain both ideas with a business-friendly approach.
That's what I'm pushing. Entertain the ideas. Spend some of that “no” energy on a solution on how and where to make business happen.
I look around the Western Slope and I see a gorgeous part of the Rockies. I also see the economy has hit hard times here. In an area where jobs are scarce, I'm struck how many people's first reaction is to say “no.”
How hungry does someone have to be before they are open to discussion? I dare answer my own question and say maybe they're not hungry at all. Maybe the food stamps are flowing just fine in America.
The consensus always seems to be “Yeah, bring American jobs back to America.” Yet when someone ventures out, the same consensus is too eager to flood them with bureaucracy.
What's left for America? Our nation won't flourish where the only incomes allowed are consulting and welfare.
How many items did you purchase last week that were not made in America? How much did that tank of gas cost? If the consumer says “ouch,” they're not receptive to logic...." (Read more? Click title)
