SandBox Comments: Grand Junction Daily Sentinel "Crimes-against-kids cases a major concern in budget negotiations"

"Hilkey is asking to restore some of the investigation abilities lost in 2010 budget cutting.

The investigations of crimes against children have suffered significantly, the Sheriff’s Department said in budget documents. With the loss of an investigator’s position, the caseload per investigator has almost doubled, from 9.9 to 18.5 cases per complex-crimes unit investigator, delaying responses to those cases.

“In 2010 we responded in days” to such reports, the sheriff’s budget request says. “In 2011 we are responding in weeks....”
