SandBox Comments: CNN/Wolf Blitzer "Huntsman proposes gutsy changes to Social Security"

SandBox Comments: Summit Daily News/Jeff Mcabee "It takes all kinds"

"There are those who take the ol' road less traveled by and enter at the narrow gate and those who use the broad way, the interstate highway really, that would lead somewhere except for the traffic. It's jammed with people stuck in purgatory.

There are those who are saved and those who are lost and those who judge and those who leave it to a higher authority.

There is black and white, up and down, left and right, urban and rural, tall and short, big and small, right and wrong, good and evil, wise and foolish, north and south, east and west, those who know a Manichean bifurcation when they see one and those who don't.

And then there is you, who every time I try to label you and put you into some category, you find a new way to defy, surprise, amaze and humble me..."

SandBox Comments: Aspen Times/Melanie Sturm "When going green goes south instead"

This is the best of Melanie Sturm.  Fantastic column this week.

Up on The Aspen Times.

"...Yet the reality is that these lofty job creation projections are wrong, as detailed in last month's New York Times story “Number of Green Jobs Fails to Live Up to Promises.” The Times concluded, ”such numbers are a pipe dream” because, as they've previously reported, wind power costs 50 percent more than conventional power, and solar-generated electricity costs up to three times more than wind power. Shifting resources toward less-efficient purposes inevitably results in less prosperity — fewer jobs at lower pay.

Furthermore, in order to compete, renewable energy sources require costly government subsidies, price floors or purchase mandates. Consequently, green policies actually increase energy prices, undermine the economy, destroy jobs and hurt consumers, especially the poorest whose family budgets are consumed by escalating costs for everything. Exacerbating things further, energy prices increase when potential suppliers and energy entrepreneurs redirect scarce capital away from government-manipulated markets.

For these reasons, renewable energies produce only 3 percent of U.S. electricity and remain a fledgling global industry, despite having enjoyed enormous government support in the U.S., Europe and China. Given the industry's small size and inherent unviability, allowing China to subsidize production to remain the lower-cost manufacturer is logical and prudent.."

SandBox Comments: Pueblo Chieftain "Councilman Garcia announces run for House District 46 "

"Pace has represented House District 46 since 2008 but he is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Colo., next year. Anytime an incumbent lawmaker campaigns for a new office or retires, it triggers a ripple effect  up and down the chain of elected officials from local to state offices.

Garcia is the first candidate to announce to replace Pace. Jack Rink, chairman of the Pueblo County Republican Party, said there are Republicans interested in that race as well, but none are ready to announce their interest.

Pueblo County Commissioner Jeff Chostner had been another name often mentioned as a likely candidate to run for Pace's seat, but Chostner announced this week he is running for district attorney, challenging incumbent Bill Thiebaut, a fellow Democrat..."

“My philosophy is never to do anything until I know everything, have seen everything and have read everything,” Gallagher said. “And, at this point, I don’t have anything.

“I like to explore every possible avenue, what those options may be. I just don’t know yet.”

....He turned himself into authorities Aug. 9 after investigations conducted by a Grand Junction medical examiner, Rio Blanco deputies, an investigator from the district attorney’s office and Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents alleged determined otherwise.

Beeson said he is restricted from providing further comment on the case due to a gag order issued by Judge Daniel Petre..."

SandBox Comments: Craig Daily Press "Colorado attorney general to address local residents"

"Colorado Attorney General John Suthers will be visiting towns in Northwest Colorado next week to discuss crime — specifically, scams and fraud in the state.

Suthers is scheduled to speak in Craig and Steamboat Springs on Monday, and Meeker, Rifle and Eagle on Tuesday.

A public meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday at The Center of Craig, 600 Yampa Ave.
In a news release, Suthers said he wants to use the trip as a way to “connect with Coloradans” and “get the word out” about such problems.

“Consumer awareness is the most powerful tool we have to prevent Coloradans from falling victim to scams and identity theft,” he said..."

SandBox Comments: Aspen Daily News/Letter to the Editor "A gifted mayor"

"Editor:

Your lead story today says at the very end that our mayor claims the city attorney is confident that the city can successfully defend a suit challenging an ordinance that has not yet been drafted, let alone submitted to council, nor enacted into law. If this is a true report of the mayor’s view, it is amazing, as it requires clairvoyance and foresight of the precise language of a yet to be drafted ordinance, as well as the nature of the legal challenges and arguments that might be raised against it.

What a gift. Perhaps we can obtain from such a clairvoyant a prediction of how much the city will have to spend from scarce resources to defend the ordinance.."

SandBox Comments: Aspen Daily News/Letter to the Editor "Beyond Belief"

"I have been a part-time resident of this valley for the past 36 years. We have all been witness to the arrogance and shenanigans of the politicians in Aspen and Pitkin County. However, today’s paper has an example of the worst yet.

Commissioners Owsley, Richards and Hatfield have reached the peak. To reject Marylin Marks because she may not agree with the commission on some issues is so wrong as to be beyond belief. Why do you need any volunteer boards if you want only “yes people.” Pitkin County is way past the need for term limits for the commission...."

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Colorado ranks 34th, not 49th, in school spending"

Was it something we said that finally got Marty Lich's Letter to the Editor posted in the PI?

"Having read the statement made by Mary Elizabeth and Chris Geiger in their Sept. 12 letter, “Colorado is currently 49th in state spending on public schools,” yet once again, I am compelled to say not so.

An Issue brief of December 2010 written by the Colorado Legislative Council states that Colorado ranks 34th in per pupil operating expenditures.

People can read it for themselves here:
