SandBox Comments: The Hill "House Republicans introduce bill to speed up illegal-immigrant deportations "

One of the things SandBox likes about 'The Hill' is the trolls (yes, kids, we're all trolls.  The goal is to be a good troll) who frequent that forum generally run a good dialog.  There are some good comments on this piece by Pete Kasperowicz.  Check 'em out.

"Rep. Duncan Hunter says bill is partly a response to an administration policy that focuses on deporting immigrants who are a threat.

Twenty-one House Republicans on Thursday introduced legislation that would require immigration officials to deport illegal immigrants on an expedited basis.

The bill, H.R. 2952, was planned before the Obama administration announced a new policy that focuses on deporting immigrants who pose more of a threat to the U.S., such as those who have committed crimes. But the bill's chief sponsor, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), said it is partly a response to that policy decision, which he called a "blatant disregard for the law" because it would selectively enforce U.S. immigration laws.

"Laws are meant to be followed, and not ignored for convenience or political advantage," Hunter said in late August when he said his bill was pending..."

SandBox Comments: Intellectual Conservative "The Presidential Qualification Issue"

It started years ago, with Arnold running for office out in California.

How very interesting to watch the synchronization of the questions on immigration qualifications to hold public office (and) the growth of the humane immigration reform movement.

Is Marco Rubio legally qualified to hold the Office of the Vice-Presidency should he be asked to run?

Excellent post from Bruce Walker.  Somewhere out there on The Intellectual Conservative.

"Everyone is talking about Marco Rubio possibly becoming a vice-presidential nominee. But his father did not apply for naturalization until Marco was four years old. Is he eligible?

Marco Rubio is on most short lists for the Republican vice presidential nomination, with the principal objection the question as to whether he is constitutionally eligible. How should we view this issue? At the outset, we need to dispose of the idea that the Constitution contemplates political parties nominating candidates to run for president or vice president. Both parties and candidates have no constitutional reality at all..."

SandBox Comments: Pueblo Chieftain "Accusations fly in far-off race for Pueblo district attorney "

The Pueblo Chieftain and the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel are where one goes to take the political pulse of Colorado.

The Denver Post and The Colorado Independent, to most Coloradans, are more where you go to find out the spin, hyperbole, daily trash talk  and have a good laugh when Colorado's political atmosphere is hot.

The old war horse Chieftain pegged this race for 10th Judicial District DA as one that would probably set in the record books as an all-out fight to the last vote.

Sure enough, it's shaping up to be exactly that.

And we still have over 13 months to go.

"..And Thiebaut disputes Chostner's claim that the city's crime rate is twice the state's, noting that former Police Chief Jim Billings said the statistics from that study were based on flawed data.

Finally, Chostner said a recent controversy in the murder trial of David Anthony Carrillo is emblematic of his criticism of how Thiebaut's office handles cases.

"Here's a case where he's not giving discovery in a timely manner," Chostner said. "That's the kind of mismanaging of cases I'm talking about."

Thiebaut's office has been accused by Carrillo's public defender of failing to disclose and possibly covering up a memo from a police detective that suggested a report by another officer at the crime scene was false.

Thiebaut maintains that there was no discovery violation. The memo was handed to Carrillo's defense team the day before a preliminary hearing and he continues to claim Public Defender Adam Schultz is trying to force a favorable plea deal for his client.

Thiebaut also claims there are ethical considerations about commenting on or trying to influence an ongoing case that Chostner, as an attorney, should know about.

Thiebaut laments that his office doesn't seem to be given the credit for high-profile victories in court, including a conviction of the so-called "Ether Man" — Robert Howard Bruce — for trying to kill a Pueblo police officer, and the conviction of Paul Wayne Stark for raping and killing 14-year-old Ashley Patterson of Pueblo West..."

SandBox Comments: Grand Junction Daily Sentinel "Surviving the inferno"

Paul Shockley, over on The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, takes us right along with Grand Junction firefighter Cory Black as he risked his life performing his duty.

We thank Fireman Black for his service and send him our thanks that he is OK and still with us.

SandBox Comments: Aspen Daily News "Oh the joy of community service, even for police"

"...ZG knew it all along. Despite the warm community feeling of the local Rotary Club’s Ducky Derby, and all the great causes it supports, there is no way you can dump all that plastic into the river and expect to get every duck back. And sure enough, during a recent “river walk” from Rio Grande Park to Cemetery Lane, ZG observed about a half-dozen of the ducks stuck in various places along the banks.

The goal of the derby is to sponsor the duck that crosses the finish line first and cash in on the $10,000 award, but ZG wonders what prize awaits him if he brings a duck back from an upcoming trip to Lake Powell..."

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Council OKs West Glenwood house, driveway in hillside zone'

If this had been a similar, stacked deck type of council we've had for the past decade, Scott Balcomb would have never been approved.

“What they've put in front of us is as good as you can get, unless someone wants to buy it as open space,” said Councilman Todd Leahy. He said the lot comes with an entitlement to build, and it wasn't the city's intent to wipe out such entitlements when it imposed the Hillside Preservation Overlay Zone..."

How good it is to see leadership that is finally starting to represent more than just a very small faction of the Glenwood Springs community.

SandBox Comments: Aspen Daily News "Saturday night ski pass fever"

My goodness, says, SandBox Nanny.

'kids' are all up early and her cup of tea is now cold.

Usually most of the day's posting is done by now.  Yet today, she's barely made it through reading the PI and The Aspen Daily...

(sigh...rolls eyes...)

"..Can you imagine if our illegal workforce were all die-hard skiers? That would be an awesome spectacle, and a quandary of sorts. Think of the massive festive crowd at the gondola on a powder day filled with people selling burritos, listening to Mexican radio. The town would come to a complete stop. It’s already bad enough getting a fresh line after 10:30 a.m. It seems like the mountains get chewed up more quickly now on a powder day. And not to mention one beginner snowboarder can do the same damage as four expert skiers to a field of freshies...

...Do whatever it takes to get a ski pass. Make a deal with the devil. I have his number if you need it..."

SandBox Comments: Power Line "Obama’s Last Chance"

"Future historians are likely to look back on this week as the period Obama passed the point of no return for his presidency, and they may identify today, September 16, as the single most important day in his undoing.  I wonder if Obama has any clue that his presidency is collapsing in real time?  Dumb question: of course he doesn’t.

Yes, I was obviously playing around with my post earlier today on “Operation Chaos,” but then something deeply serious occurred here in Washington that I didn’t notice until the evening news: 36 Senators from both parties held a big press conference calling on the debt ceiling supercommittee to “go big” with sweeping pro-growth tax reform—one that would slash deductions and lower rates dramatically.  In particular, I was struck by Oregon’s Sen. Ron Wyden, a smart liberal, who cited the 1986 Reagan-tax reform that he said created millions of jobs.  He may not be correct strictly speaking about the job creation bit, but that misses the point:

"This press conference was not meant for the supercommittee.  It was meant for Obama."
