SandBoxBlogs: The Hill "‘A better America begins’: Romney launches race against Obama"

SandBoxBlogs: Town Hall "Running Without An Agenda For The Next Four years"

Donald Lambro:
"WASHINGTON - President Obama has officially begun his 2012 campaign, telling special interest groups what the government will do for them if he is re-elected to a second term.

But the question many people are asking is, what else is he running on besides government handouts?

What's his second term agenda? What is he planning to do if he wins? He doesn't say.

There is no hint of a grand plan of action dealing with the mountain of unfinished problems he's left behind in the nation's capital as he piles up frequent flyer miles in hot pursuit of his singular goal: becoming a two term president.

His campaign rhetoric thus far gives us no clue that he intends to address the big problems that still need to be fixed. He knows what they are, because polls tell us what America's primary concerns are: a lackluster, slow-growth, sub-par economy, far too few jobs; a monster $1.2 trillion budget deficit, the fourth of his big spending presidency, and a $16 trillion debt by the end of this year.

But Obama isn't talking about a mediocre economy that appears to be slowing down -- again.

And he isn't talking about jobs, or bemoaning the fact that many college grads -- who this week he promised an extension of low interest student loans -- can't find a job that will allow them to pay back the government.

As for the student loan extension Obama is pushing on the campaign trail, it's interesting to note that in 2007 then-Sen. Obama missed two pivotal Senate votes on the bill that created the program.

He's embracing it now because he needs the support of younger voters to save his presidency, but he did not vote for the original bill or on final passage, and didn't bother to sign on as a co- sponsor, according to a report Tuesday by Politico....." (Read more?  Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Daily Caller "Obama Foreign Policy: Our MIA president"

James Carafino:
"Does President Obama even do foreign relations anymore? To all appearances, he checked out of the global leadership scene months ago. It’s almost as though, after making the call to off Osama bin Laden, he pumped his fist and said, “That’s it. I’m done.”

Once upon a time, pundits used to speculate that a president beset with serious domestic problems would be tempted to “wag the dog” — to drum up a foreign crisis to boost his prospects of re-election. But there’s no chatter about Mr. Obama springing an October surprise. Perhaps it’s because he seems intent on doing everything possible to put the world on hold until after the election.

Certainly, that’s what he’s telling foreign leaders. Recall that embarrassing open mic moment in South Korea, when he assured Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that he could be more “flexible” on missile defense — after the election.

A Palestinian Authority official said he got the same message: Washington would push hard for Palestinian statehood, but not until after the election.

Nowadays, when Mr. Obama steps onto the world stage, he seems determined to make the least of it...."

SandBoxBlogs: Iowa Republican "Romney Cruises in Five More Primary States"

Kevin Hall:
"Mitt Romney’s bid for the GOP presidential nomination took a major step forward Tuesday night. Rick Santorum’s departure from the race enabled Mitt Romney to completely dominate Tuesday’s primaries in five Northeast states. Romney garnered more than 56 percent of the vote in Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.

His resounding victories enabled Romney to acquire almost all of the 231 delegates at stake. New York was the big prize, where 95 delegates were up for grabs. Romney now needs to pick up around 400 more delegates to reach 1,144 and surpass the threshold necessary to clinch the nomination.

The former Massachusetts governor barely campaigned in any of the states. His victory speech was delivered from New Hampshire, where he launched his presidential bid. “Everywhere I go, Americans are tired of being tired and many of those who are fortunate enough to have a job are working harder for less,” Romney said. “To all of you, I have a simple message: Hold on a little longer. A better America begins tonight.”...." SandBoxBlogs: CAIR Press Release "Subsidized college tuition for illegal aliens too expensive"

Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform (not to be confused with CIRC):

"April 25, 2012 (Denver, CO)  The pending Colorado ASSET bill, SB12-015 will give illegal aliens  access to subsidized tuition rates. This bill, if passed, will displace deserving American students with foreign nationals who are not allowed to work in the United States. The bill's fiscal note inaccurately claims it will create a net gain of "up to $2.8 million" in tuition. It ignores the fact that these "slots" would have been taken by other students, some paying higher out-of-state tuition rates. The fiscal note also fails to project the future impact on K-12 expenditures and public benefit expenditures when more illegal aliens bring their children to Colorado to benefit from subsidized tuition.

Marty Lich, CAIR spokesperson said, "Even with a college degree, illegal alien students are still unlawfully present and cannot legally obtain employment. They cannot work in the State of Colorado. They can not seek employment anywhere in the US."

At a time of 7.8 percent unemployment in Colorado, this bill will displace legal workers. "This bill is a sham," said CAIR Director Stan Weekes. "Why should taxpayers subsidize displacement of their own students? Times are already tough enough for our college students - half of our college grads are jobless or underemployed."

Government projections released last month revealed that by 2020, of the 30 occupations with the largest projected number of job openings, only three will require a Bachelor's degree or higher. The Mountain West region will be most likely to see college graduates jobless or underemployed - approximately 3 out of 5 grads...."  (Click title to be taken to CAIR website)

SandBoxBlogs: Denver Post/Breaking News "Officials: Feds nab gang members in NM meth ring"

Russell Contreras:
"ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Federal agents have arrested around two dozen suspected gang members linked to what authorities are describing as a meth and heroin ring in New Mexico.

Officials with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations are scheduled to announce details of the statewide gang roundup Wednesday at their new offices south of Albuquerque.

Homeland Security Investigations said the operation targeted known gang members in Albuquerque and Farmington near the Navajo Nation.

The roundup of gang members comes after law enforcement agencies around New Mexico have asked federal officials to assist cash-strapped departments in battling gangs, drug trafficking and weapons violations. But as federal authorities have moved into places like Roswell and Las Cruces, violent drug cartels have increased their presence in the remote area of northwest New Mexico that borders Arizona, Utah and Colorado.

Federal authorities said that by getting involved and charging criminals in federal court, they can increase the amount of prison time.

In recent months, Homeland Security agents assisted local law enforcement agencies in more than 20 criminal investigations that will be prosecuted by U.S. attorneys, said Dennis Ulrich, a deputy special agent in charge of the agency's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement......

........Since 2009, Homeland Security Investigations has added around 60 new agents to New Mexico and helped formed a number of joint task forces and multiagency groups aimed at tackling rural gangs, political corruption, drug and gun trafficking, child pornography, and human smuggling......."

SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Daily News "Caloia to challenge Beeson in DA race"

(See recent related stories and recent public commentary here, here and here)

Chad Abraham:
"Saying she disagrees with the philosophy of the 9th Judicial District prosecutor’s office, a longtime Glenwood Springs lawyer is challenging the re-election bid of District Attorney Martin Beeson.

Sherry Caloia, who has practiced law for 30 years and been a Glenwood resident since 1988, said Tuesday that it was a difficult decision to enter the race.

But Beeson’s statements about the role of defense attorneys, his appeal of a judge’s sanctioning of the Aspen DA’s office and certain prosecutions she finds questionable all led to her decision to enter the race, she said.

The 9th Judicial District encompasses Pitkin, Garfield and Rio Blanco counties.

Ironically, the man she is challenging might not be the top prosecutor had it not been for efforts by Caloia and others to recall the previous district attorney, Colleen Truden, in 2005.

Caloia, 56, organized the petition drive that led to the first recall in Colorado history of a district attorney. Several deputy district attorneys, including Beeson, resigned rather than continue working with Truden. Among the criticisms of Truden were allegations of financial and ethical improprieties.

But Caloia, a defense attorney who also serves as municipal prosecutor for the towns of Basalt and Carbondale, said her efforts then were strictly on the petition effort.

“I didn’t help him get elected,” she said of Beeson, a Republican. “I think he’s a good man, and I respect him ... but I didn’t work on Martin’s campaign.”

Caloia, a longtime Democrat, said the political party in Garfield County lobbied her “very heavily” to throw her hat in the ring. But the issues are not strictly political, she said..."  (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Daily News "Man charged with felony after alleged heroin overdose"

Should the folks feel outrage at Chief Deputy District Attorney Arnold Mordkin's remarks regarding heroin in the Valley, or should they just feel anger?

For the past few years, as drug and related law enforcement issues have spiked in the area, avatars in commentary have been pushing hard with questions for 9th Judicial prosecutors.  Such as, where are the task forces to take on these major crime problems?  Why don't court officers such as Richard Nedlin know that Red Door in Aspen is it for rehab and it's on its knees with overcrowding and meager funding?

Let's give Chief Deputy Mordkin a hand with his research regarding heroin in the area. Help him get up to speed so that the next time he quotes for the press he can have some factual information to rely on:

Chad Abraham:
"In Pitkin County District Court, Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely, filling in for Judge Gail Nichols, advised Lee that he is charged with felony possession of less than 4 grams of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor count of unlawful use of a controlled substance.

As part of his $2,500 bond, Lee will be able to travel to Southern California, where he is originally from. His next court date is June 4.

Arnold Mordkin, chief deputy district attorney, said heroin cases are unusual for the upper valley. The last local case involving the drug was that of an Aspen man who pleaded guilty to attempted distribution of a controlled substance in 2009. He was arrested after police said he provided heroin to a man visiting Aspen who died in 2008 after using that drug and cocaine.

Olson said Tuesday that heroin is not unheard of in Snowmass Village.

“We have it bubble to the surface from time to time,” he said. “Every time it does, people self-destruct pretty quickly.”

Police know the drug is used occasionally, but it’s usually not long before users overdose or are “whisked away” by family members for treatment, Olson said.

“It’s been a self-correcting problem so far but it’s also concerning,” he said. “It’s a brutal drug.” ..."

SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Times "Marks prevails in Jefferson County case"

What does it take to stand up, knowing you're going to have to spend your own funds and that there is a long row to hoe in front of you?

What would it take, once you made that personal and free will choice to stand, to get to the starting line and find the hurdles of bullying, intimidation, threats to your person and ability to live in peace coming straight at you?  Acts against your personal free will choice that are not only unnecesary from others, they are unwarranted, shocking and could actually be criminal in nature?  Acts that frighten and demean you, pushing your life into an energy you never thought you would have to know?

The former is an act of free will.

The latter is forced on you by others.

A special and public personal thank you goes out to Marilyn Marks this morning.

A woman of courage who wanted reform for her community and got so much more than she opted in for.

How good it is to see her finally be reimbursed for a portion of her expenses to cover a fight that really is....all of our fight.  Yes, we imagine it is even a sweeter victory for her because she had the free will choice in the first place to take it on.  Well done.

Congratulations on still yet another historic win for Marks and Colorado.

Janet Urquhart:
"ASPEN — A District Court judge has deemed election records in Jefferson County open to public review and has awarded attorney's fees to Aspen election activist Marilyn Marks, who was denied access to the information.

Judge Randall Arp, in a ruling issued Monday, directed Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder Pamela Anderson to provide the records requested by Marks and rejected the clerk's claim that release of the information could violate voter rights to an anonymous ballot. Any information that could potentially lead to identification of an individual voter who cast a ballot could be redacted, Arp concluded.

Marks said Tuesday that her legal expenses in the case total about $100,000....."

SandBoxBlogs: SkyHi Daily "Plan calls for wildlife bridges over State Highway 9 near Kremmling"

Tonya Bina:
"The overpasses would allow for wildlife to travel on a vegetated crossing over the highway. Fencing along the overpass hidden by tall bushes and plantings would serve to create a visual barrier to deter wildlife from being spooked by traffic below, Smith said.

Such wildlife crossing have been successful in Wyoming, Nevada and Utah, he said.

To funnel wildlife to the crossings, wildlife fencing would be installed along all 10 miles of highway.

Engineers hope to have the $800,000 design phase of the project completed by October, according to Smith.

The project will then stand ready for the $35 million to $40 million construction project that could happen when funds become available.

“If a project is on the shelf, it has a really good chance for future funding,” said CDOT engineer Pete Mertes.

“We have a lot going for us,” said Region 3 Grand County Commissioner Gary Bumgarner. “We have a design on the table that's ready to go. And we have a public-private partnership; as we move forward, the higher-ups look to that favorably. ... As states get tighter, there's going to be more and more of that all the time.”

After the meeting, Bumgarner said he could not say whether Grand County would help finance construction of the project in the future. So far, the county's role has been to hold the $805,000 gift from Blue Valley Ranch and pass it through to CDOT for the design work....."  (Read more?  Click title)

"As part of the Denver expansion, The Boston Beer Company also announced the region's first loan recipients, all of whom are small businesses that were unable to secure financing through traditional lenders. Initial Denver recipients include:

-- BIG DADDY'S SPORTS BAR -- Opening in Glenwood Springs, Big Daddy's Sports Bar is the brainchild of Laura Warren, a sports enthusiast and restaurant-industry veteran who realized there were no true sports bars in the area. Unable to secure funding through traditional lenders she turned to Samuel Adams' Brewing the American Dream for the capital necessary to purchase signage, equipment, and help renovate the space. Scheduled to open in late April, Big Daddy's expects to initially hire 19 staff members.

-- TACO CENTER -- Ricardo Barba just purchased a lanchera, or food truck, specializing in tacos thanks to Brewing the American Dream. Born in California to Mexican parents, he's been part of the food service industry all his life in all sorts of capacities but realized what he really wanted was to be his own boss. He faced numerous hurdles while trying to work with various traditional lenders to secure funding for his truck but then found Brewing the American Dream, and within 14 days received his loan.

The owners of both businesses will also have the opportunity to participate in business education seminars sponsored by Brewing the American Dream. Through a series of speed coaching events -- the first of which will be held on April 25, at the Mi Casa Resource Center -- business owners will work with Samuel Adams employees across a number of functional areas (i.e. marketing, sales, accounting, graphic design, etc.) for professional mentoring and coaching to improve and expand their businesses....."
