SandBoxBlogs: Goose Radio "Obama Guy~~The Return"

Have you heard?  Goose is back.

Trying to get a word in edgewise with 'Obama Guy'.

Take a look at his latest  'Demotivator' while you're there.

Goose Nissley:
"Just as GooseRadio rises once more from the ashes, our old nemesis James the Obama Guy is back. He finds his way back to our airwaves and he’s as angry as ever. He first takes aim at Mitt Romney for wanting to take away his stuff and give it to rich people, along the way explaining how President Obama gave him a car & a job at Dominoes. In his anger, James attempts to occupy our phone line. Also on the agenda are capitalism, the Hunger Games, the true meaning of the Osama Bin Ladin episode, and Bruce Springsteen...."

SandBoxBlogs: The Atlantic "Jobs Report Brings Bad News for Team Obama"

Catherine Hollander:
"The latest jobs report is bad news for the economy and for the Obama administration. April's disappointing payroll numbers confirm that the economy is slowing again on the heels of a winter in which the recovery appeared to be finally picking up steam.

If job growth continues at this rate, unemployment will remain at or above the politically-important 8 percent level before Election Day, according to Hamilton Place Strategies' Patrick Sims. Sims calculates that it will take monthly payroll growth of 176,000 to get below 8 percent by November -- unless more Americans drop out of the labor force, or stop looking for work. That's what caused the April headline unemployment rate to fall from 8.2 to 8.1 percent; labor force participation is now at its lowest point in 31 years. That's not the story an incumbent president wants to tell....."  (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Town Hall "10 Things That Would Be Happening Today If Obama's Policies Were Working"

John Hawkins:
"Barack Obama has "already held more re-election fundraising events than every elected president since Richard Nixon combined." Yet, despite the fact that he has been campaigning almost non-stop since the 2010 election, aside from trying to steal credit from the SEALs for killing Osama Bin Laden, you very seldom hear Obama talk about his record. This is especially noteworthy because like him or hate him, Obama has passed a lot of legislation. So, if Barack Obama has such an extensive record, why is it that Republicans are the ones that are always talking about it while Obama tries to steer the conversation to anything else? Simple: Obama is a failed President. His policies haven't worked. If Obama had actually produced results, the country would look very different today....." (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Durango Herald "Ahmadinejad rivals win seats in Iran runoff"

ALI AKBAR DAREINI
"Partial results for an Iranian parliamentary runoff election announced Saturday show supporters of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reduced to a small fraction of the legislature, hugely outnumbered by the conservatives who once backed him but then turned against him after he was perceived to challenge the authority of top clerics.

Iran has touted the turnout for Friday's vote as a show of support for the country's religious leadership in their confrontation with the West over Tehran's controversial nuclear program.

It also represents another blow against the populist president who, while usually in agreement with the conservatives on foreign policy and many other issues, had tried to change the rules of the political game in the Islamic Republic, where the president and legislature are subordinate to religious figures like Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khanenei.

The new parliament will begin its sessions in late May. It has no direct control over major policy matters like Iran's nuclear program, but it can influence the run-up to the election of Ahmadinejad's successor in 2013.

Of 65 seats for grabs in Friday's runoff election, Ahmadinejad's opponents won 20 while the president's supporters got only 8 seats. Independents won 11, according to the state media early Saturday...."

Ben Fox:
"GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) — The self-proclaimed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks and four accused co-conspirators will appear in public for the first time in more than three years Saturday, when U.S. officials start a second attempt at what is likely to be a drawn out legal battle that could lead to the men's executions.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his co-defendants are to be arraigned at a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay on charges that include that include 2,976 counts of murder for the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil...."  (Read more?  Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Craig Daily Press "The gift of goodbye: Craig Police Department officers awarded for heroic actions during February fire"

Jerry Martin:
"When Craig Police Department officer Mike Edwards knocked on the door of a burning house on the night of Feb. 7, he didn’t expect anyone to answer.

“People were saying, ‘There’s nobody in there,’ but for some reason, with a car parked in the driveway, I didn’t know if there was anybody in the house,” said Edwards, a 10-year police veteran.

“I went up and knocked on the door and a guy from the inside said, ‘Come on in.’”

The man inside the house, 75-year-old Patrick Hunter, was trying to escape from a fire that was engulfing his home at 1912 Woodlawn, a fire that claimed the life of his ex-wife and live-in companion, Ursula Hunter.

Believing he saw Patrick's hand near the door, Edwards quickly conferred with Officer Lance Eldridge and Sergeant Corey Wagner, both of whom arrived on the scene seconds after him, before entering the burning building and pulling Patrick to the doorway.

The other two officers then moved him outside where he could receive medical attention. He was taken to The Memorial Hospital, where he died three days later. In recognition of their bravery, the three law enforcement officers were named Officers of the Year on Friday by the Colorado Law Enforcement Officers Association...."  (Read more?  Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Basalt woman would be eligible in 3 years for immigration visa"

Heather McGregor:
"GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — About 40 people rallied at noon on Friday to protest the pending deportation of a Basalt woman, whose son recently won a prestigious scholarship to attend Duke University.

Norma Galindo, 39, also known by her married name, Norma Morales, was taken into custody on April 24 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials on a removal order issued in 2005 and upheld in 2008. She is an undocumented Mexican citizen who has lived in the U.S. for the past 21 years.....

........Now the family is distraught that Galindo is in custody, facing deportation to Mexico, as her son is about to graduate from Basalt High School. The family's younger son, Oswaldo, is 12......

....The Morales family and the Association of Youth United in Action are asking ICE to reconsider Norma's deportation, allow her to stay with her family, attend her son's high school graduation, and “to be given a chance to legally be a part of the nation her family calls home,” according to a press release issued Friday morning......

......In 2006, Galindo was convicted in Garfield County Court of a misdemeanor charge after she tried to obtain a state ID card at the Glenwood Springs Department of Motor Vehicles office using another person's New Mexico birth certificate. Galindo served one year of unsupervised probation.

Hess argues that a policy issued by ICE in 2011, outlining conditions that would warrant discretion on the part of prosecutors in choosing whether to pursue deportation cases, would change the course of Galindo's case. Hess argues in his brief that Galindo meets many of those guidelines.....

....Her disadvantages are the state ID card conviction and her decision to stay in the U.S. despite the removal order.....
....Hess contends that these factors would have led a U.S. immigration judge to make a different decision when Galindo appeared in 2008 for a hearing to appeal the deportation order. At the time, the judge denied her appeal. Hess argues that under the 2011 guidelines, her deportation case would have been closed...... (Read more? Click title)

It has been both an honor and a privilege to represent the counties of Garfield, Pitkin, and Rio Blanco. It is with a heavy heart that I leave this wonderful town, job, and community for another opportunity on the Front Range. SandBoxBlogs: Customs and Border Protection "CBP U.S. Border Patrol Spokane Sector Agents Seize Cocaine Valued Over $800,000"

"Metaline Falls, Wash. - CBP Spokane Sector Border Patrol agents arrested two Canadian Citizens, one Mexican National and seized approximately 80 pounds of cocaine this week near Metaline Falls, Washington. The estimated value of the cocaine is $801,020. This narcotics seizure was the result of effective tactical planning and active patrolling of remote border trails by Border Patrol agents in the field.

Agents encountered the suspects and contraband approximately 11 miles north of Metaline Falls, Washington in the Salmo Mountain area. One of the suspects hid from agents and was tracked out the next day in a snow storm with critical support from the Office of Air and Marine, Spokane Air Branch.

“This seizure and arrests are a direct result of the coordinated efforts between our CBP Border Patrol agents and Air Interdiction agents in support of our national security mission," said Gloria Chavez, Chief of the Spokane Border Patrol Sector. “It’s this kind of daily commitment, combined with specialized skills, that drives our agents to successfully interdict the flow of illicit contraband as we protect our border communities.”

All seized contraband and suspects were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for further processing.

CBP’s U.S. Border Patrol Spokane Sector has the mission of protecting our nation’s borders, between the official ports of entry, by deterring, detecting and apprehending terrorists and/or terrorist weapons. Agents continue to enforce all laws relating to trans-national threats which include the smuggling narcotics and human contraband.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws."

SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Daily News "Welcome to the club"

(See related 'Classic Madden' story and public commentary by clicking here

Hey, how about that 'local' icon Jeremy Madden?  The guy really gets the folks in the valley, doesn't he?  Understands what makes them tick and always brings forward anticipated columns.

Up on the only locally owned and operated newspaper in the area, the Aspen Daily News.

Maurice Emmer:
"Jeremy Madden wrote an entertaining column about the “fee” for paper bags in grocery stores. With humor, he made many of the points that opponents of the new scheme made when City Council was considering its adoption.

Mr. Madden is correct, in my view, in calling the “fee” a tax, and a regressive one at that. I made this point to City Council when it was considering the scheme and pointed out that the Colorado Constitution prohibits new taxes without a vote of the citizens. I suggested City Council put the matter to a public vote to avoid the risk of a legal challenge under the state constitution.

While one member of City Council thanked me for pointing out my view and respectfully disagreed with me, another simply wrote to me claiming my views were those of “crackpots” and “tea baggers” (you guess who wrote that).

Welcome to the club, Mr. Madden...."  (Read more?  Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Times "Bag ban spawns boycott"

Brandon Toomey:
"Dear Editor:

I am astonished at the complacency that the Aspen community has shown with the plastic-bag ban that has been implemented.

The fact that every week council members continue to come up with feel-good pet projects such as this to make our lives just a little bit more difficult baffles me. To top it off, you smack us in the face with a tax for option No. 2: the paper bag.

Have any of our elected officials ever visited the markets in Aspen in the winter when the guests arrive? They must not have noticed it's a madhouse. I can't wait to see the reaction next winter from visitors who spend thousands of dollars for their vacations, go shopping and spend hundreds of dollars on food and then discover they will be charged for bags.

I also suppose council asked the cashiers and baggers what hurdles they would have to overcome due to the regulation. The fact of the matter is this is just one more environmental elitist idea that will have little effect on the environment. Unfortunately you will still see bags hanging from trees and blowing in the wind from time to time. So pick it up, recycle it, and move on!

Every week I take my recyclables to the Aspen recycling center, and the plastic bags are overflowing out of the cans. That's how aware our community is about recycling. A friend of mine made a great point the other day. If council wants to reduce a local carbon footprint, why not look at something as wasteful as the snowmelt sidewalks and driveways? How many of the houses in the area sit vacant through most of the winter with snowmelt running through a snowstorm? Not only would we burn less coal to power the systems, but we create jobs by hiring local companies for snow removal. Makes sense, right?..."

SandBoxBlogs: Summit County Citizens Voice "Earthquakes destroy, but can also restore ecoysystems"

Bob Berwyn:
"SUMMIT COUNTY — The devastating 2010 earthquake and tsunami in Chile had some unexpected consequences, restoring lost beaches and even entire coastal ecoystems, according to an international team of researchers who had a unique opportunity to take a close before-and-after look at the ecological impact of the 8.8 magnitude temblor.

“Dune plants are coming back in places there haven’t been plants, as far as we know, for a very long time. The earthquake created sandy beach habitat where it had been lost. This is not the initial ecological response you might expect from a major earthquake and tsunami,” said Jenifer Dugan, an associate research biologist at UC Santa Barbara’s Marine Science Institute.

The study also offers a preview of problems associated with sea level rise, a major symptom of climate change.

“When someone builds a seawall, not only is beach habitat covered up with the wall itself, but, over time, sand is lost in front of the wall until the beach eventually drowns,” Dugan said. “The semi-dry and damp sand zones of the upper and mid intertidal are lost first, leaving only the wet lower beach zones. This causes the beach to lose diversity, including birds, and to lose ecological function. This is an under-appreciated human impact on coastlines around the world, and with climate change squeezing beaches further, it’s a very serious issue to consider.”

“This is very important because sandy beaches represent about 80 percent of the open coastlines globally. Also, sandy beaches are very good barriers against the sea level rise we are seeing around the world. It is essential to take care of sandy beaches. They are not only important for recreation, but also for conservation,” said the study’s lead author, Eduardo Jaramillo, of Universidad Austral de Chile....."

SandBoxBlogs: Summit County Citizens Voice "Climate: Greenland’s glaciers going, going … not so fast!"

Bob Berwyn:
"SUMMIT COUNTY — Greenland’s glaciers have sped up by about 30 percent in the past 10 years, a significant change, but not as much as estimated in other previous climate-change scenarios.

The documentation from 200 outlet glaciers suggests that Greenland’s contribution to rising sea level in the 21st century might be significantly less than the upper limits some scientists thought possible.

Reporting in the May 4 issue of Science, the scientists said they saw no clear indication  the glaciers will stop gaining speed during the rest of the century. By 2100 they could reach or exceed the scenario in which they contribute four inches to sea level rise.

“So far, on average we’re seeing about a 30 percent speedup in 10 years,” said Twila Moon, a University of Washington doctoral student in Earth and space sciences and lead author of the paper.

The faster the glaciers move, the more ice and meltwater they release into the ocean. Some earlier studies suggested the Greenland glaciers would double their velocity between 2000 and 2010 and then stabilize at the higher speed. Another scenario even suggested the speeds would increase tenfold and then stabilize...." (Read more?  Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Summit County Citizens Voice "Morning photo: Moonshine"

The 'supermoon' coming full tonight, gave Glenwood Springs a glimpse last night of what to expect.  So 'close', one felt they could simply reach up and touch.

Bob Berwyn's 'Moonshine', over, up and down on the Summit County Citizens Voice today is a real treat.  All credit for photos within this post goes to Bob.

I am also reminded of two very special astrophotographers in the area.  Daniel McVey over in Summit County (click here) and Professor Jimmy Westlake over in Steamboat Springs. (Click here and here)

If unfamiliar with the craft, art and science of astrophotography then I encourage you to take a look.  Stargazing and moon dreaming are wonderful hobbies.

Bob Berwyn:
"SUMMIT COUNTY — With a ‘supermoon’ coming tonight, I went out to do some low-light iPhone test shots. Turns out the little camera does some interesting things as the sky transitions from daylight to night. It wants to light up the scene as if it were daylight. I haven’t delved into all the various apps yet, though I’m sure there are some that would help capture a more “real” lightscape, but it was still fun using the Instagram filters to add some effects to the evening show along the shore of Dillon Reservoir. The supermoon, by the way, is when the full moon coincides with our satellite’s closest approach to Earth. Astronomers say the orb can appear 14 percent bigger and 20 percent than a standard full moon...."
