SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Daily News "Mayor wants new development downtown capped at two stories"

Is Mayor Mick really 'just' a handful?  Or has he actually gone round the twist?

Curtis Wackerle:
"“If there aren’t as many guns, the puppies will be safer,” Ireland said, using a favored metaphor for when developers threaten existing community uses unless projects are approved.

Current rules basically mean council is forced to approve “stilts built under penthouses” that drive real estate speculation and crowd out uses such as moderately-priced restaurants and retail, Ireland said..."

Has nothing to do with rich man poor man.

Has everything to do with holding a monopoly unjustly gained.

Milias is right on Mick. Just needs to do her research and get her facts straight on what's not quite kosher and what's not.

A man could end up with nothing but no air and a sore throat speaking up on the boondoggle all these deed restrictions are.

It's not about a war on the so-called rich. The problem with restricting the deeds by using land use codes is that if (that's "if") you have any crooked builders or developers (there's that pesky upper six figures problem rearing up again) do you really believe that they are going to take a loss anywhere?? Wake up and smell the coffee. For every single one of these hurdles some idiot like Mick puts in place thinking he's fighting the good fight for the environment of his town; there's a builder, developer and architect somewhere padding the costs or the land itself under the guise of a fear factor. No way are they going to get caught. Every plan that goes through Pitkin or Garco adds on at least another 20% throughout every cost just for the time it takes to wade through some idiot like Mick and his pointless crusade. Then you add in something like Lofgren and the damage Beeson did with that one. Ka-ching add in the possibility of being thrown in prison for life or worse face the death penalty and these guys are adding in another 25 to 30% hidden costs just to cover potential legal fees. Who pays for that?? The owners and taxpayers. Think it doesn't add up to a real chunk of change on every project? What's 20% of a 15 million construction budget? That's 20% factored into hidden costs everywhere and in addition to the 20% builder markup. Wake up and smell the coffee, Mick. There is no greater corruption in this valley than the shell game that is the affordable and employee housing brackets. They build so fast and so cheap these guys can knock out a couple of projects in the time it takes to knock out one penthouse. Worse, the city and county gives the projects to the ones doing the Aspen shuck and jive schmooze. Do yourselves a favor and think outside the box if you really want to build with a conscience and build well. It's not about rich vs. poor. It's about really big money vs. groupie wannabe.

now that your calculators are out. take that 20% of a 15 million budget and times it by 3 or 4 projects. or an extra $200 or $300,000 for the Beeson/Lofgren or Mick fear factor times 10 affordable projects and watch the ka-chings add up. once that fear factor markup is in there it's never coming out. every project bid gets the new ratio. the biggest joke of Aspen and pitkin is the tag "affordable housing". there's nothing affordable about them but it makes for great schmooze pr for a career politician and his mostly liberal fellow residents.

Another great joke to watch is the runaround chasing tails over politics and trying to get new blood to step up for change in Pitkin county.

Why on earth would a stuck in catch-22 individual step into the political arena and change how the ATM operates?

Who screams the loudest against women like the lovely and strong Marilyn Marks when she champions transparency in Pitkin and Aspen government?

Heck with smelling the coffee. Stop drinking the kool-aid.
