SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Glenwood Mock Trial teams sweep regional tourney"

March 6, 2012 NOTE:  There has been a correction (or is it an update/explanation?)  made by coach Charlie Willman in today's Post Independent. Click here. A reminder that comments are being monitored on this local story and the problem seems to lie with the coaches and the PI's coverage.  Not the kids. )

________________________________________________

What a sad, sad day for Glenwood Springs that no public acknowledgement or resolution has been made transparent by Glenwood Springs High School Mock Trial coaches.

See related story and public commentary (including from the legal community) here.

"Unapologetically pursuing and tracking patterns within the news others make since 2010."

Has it already been a year since Grand Junction stood up to Willman and Zerbi in Glenwood Springs? Not a word in any local press up and down the corridor of the outcome.

But they sure do pour on the jazz in the paper with another win. The question still is, Charlie and Vic. How did you get that win? Same way as last year?

Inquiring minds who care about kids in this community for a lot of years now want to know what our next generation of local lawyers are being taught. Least you can do is put on another presser and explain the outcome of what happened last year. Pretty sure the public will take it from there depending on what you have to say.

congratulations to the kids on this big win, you did good. Always question authority.

There is no "alleged" when it comes to ethics.

A public accusation of any kind has to stand accountable all the way through to the end.

You've likely set yourself up for the righteous indignation of a local lawyer, Nanny.

Don't fall for it.

There aren't any excuses for any lawyer to not understand and know the rules. Straighten it out in the paper, Charlie and Vic.

Then again, you could also just stay silent and let the kids you're coaching bear the brunt.

Sounds like the same problem ZG just uncovered on Ferguson and AJH.

You know. Wondering what actually happened.

Yes, it's been a year, 22. I didn't take the time to go check and see if public funds were given in a grant this year. I know that was one of your issues with last year's problem.

Thank you for the advice, EBD.

Actually, my "sad, sad day for Glenwood Springs" commentary is aimed at the GSPI reporting. The once again public print that is so far out of balance it has an adverse effect on kids. I'm pretty sure the PI got the point.

If not, then avatars in commentary were likely going to reinforce the view. There is simply no excuse for a small newspaper to be so far out of perspective and so biased to only one segment of the community they serve. That bias is very worthy of public admonishing when kids and young adults become targets of that medium's lack of full responsibility.

In this case, of this story, my "shame on you, Charlie Willman" is aimed at (from all accounts that I hear of Willman) a very well-respected, highly intelligent, excellent lawyer...allowing the GSPI to get away with that bias, using it for points with the public and to congratulate a win while he drops the ball with making sure kids are covered from possible media backlash. Like they endured last year.

This is a phenomenal accomplishment for these kids.

But, if the goal is to become good lawyers like Willman and Zerbi. The learning tool is an excellent one.

Yes, 'anonymous'. "What actually happened" is always a better bet to run with in any news story. Which is why 'SandBox Nanny' will stick with spinning the spin others create. Have a great Sunday, everyone.

Thanks for the update link nanny.

And a great big thank you to Charlie Willman for the detailed explanation on what happened to the cheating allegations last year.

Best give a nod to the PI staff for the great coverage. Rock on, all you adults. The mock trial kids have you beat by miles.

'Nanny' thinks the point has been made.

With the PI giving out what is assumed as the coaches response today; let's wind this one down until either it resolves or next mock trial season and let the kids enjoy their win outside of all media spotlights.

Comment ability going dark on this post.
