SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Glenwood Springs retail sales end year up 1.7 percent"

Of all the little victories and breakthroughs for the little guys here in the Roaring Fork Valley over the past four years; this one from John Stroud over on the Glenwood Springs Post Independent makes 'SandBox Nanny' feel the best.

Look at this.

He even has graphics.  Talk about smoking right on by the guys up on the Aspen Daily News!!!  Yowza!!

Will this be enough, all you avatars in commentary?

Has John Stroud finally done enough to satisfy your shout outs for details when it comes to revenue reporting from the City of Glenwood Springs?

Has he ever.  Thank you, Mr. Stroud.  This is very, very well done.  Let's see if the 'kids' buy it.

Hooah.

You betcha it will! This is great. I'll be the first to stand up and shout out to Stroud my thanks for the details.

It's so helpful. We small business owners look hard at this kind of information. It's vital to survival, especially with a seriously dire 1.7% increase being all we gained last year.

For example, it's great that lodging climbed a little to 8%. But these numbers show that they are not staying here and shopping here. That's big information that is worth looking at as we prepare to head into election cycles.

Thanks for this, John. It really is appreciated. Please bring it to the general public every month.

How very nice this is. Thank you goes to the PI.

They are still using us as a pit stop, a sleepover.

If people have a little extra money now, they look like they're spending it to finally do auto maintenance and fill the tank instead of just putting in $20. They're restocking the basic non-grocery essentials and maybe getting some meat in the freezer and pantry shelves stocked. Clothes, extras are a no-go.

It's about survival and lesson learned that we can't trust the lip service from our promotions and marketing.

Definitely time to deal with the 800 lb gorilla in the room. 1.7% is just pathetic.

I'll bite.

When something hasn't worked for 4 years but has still had half million + bucks a year to try---isn't it time to get rid of it?

We have the worst record of tourism marketing in the area. Nobody does this bad. Not even New Castle and Silt and they've got nothing to offer.

Dump the Glenwood chamber vendor now and hire Hill Aevium for 2012.

We're desperate.

This just might be the best news to hit 81601 in a long, long time.

There can't be any dancing around milking any tone of positive about this news because there is no positive. Can't be any lipstick slapped on the pig or rah rah's from the cheerleaders trying to spin another year of marketing contract out of the town. There is no positive in this news. In fact, it's the worst performance we've ever had and the breakdown of sales numbers that prove what taxpayers have been saying for years is public information for the first time. That breakdown shows we are being used as a pit stop. They may buy a meal or two but the shopping is nearly non-existent.

This isn't news to the business community that is outside of the 5 or 6 tourism big guys who get their full advertising budgets paid each year with the tourism marketing contract.

So, this just might be the best news to hit 81601 in a long time because now that the PI has finally done its job and printed; there is no denying that the right performance and right tourism marketing plan is simply not there.

Fire this vendor and the plan they have. Hire Hill Aevium to maintain promoting what we have. The cost will be at least 20% less than what we're paying to float the chambers overhead for all their enterprise. Hooner's been voted off the board, Hemmen left it, the chamber really is imploding and they have no one stepping up. The time is ripe for big change and from the looks of the production numbers it can't come too soon.

I'll agree with my wife. This could be the catalyst that finally gets some attention to what people in Glenwood Springs have been shouting about for almost 14 years. The real news flash is that group of less than a dozen power mongers who didn't just put us in the spot of all eggs in one basket but have been groupie followed for decades? Take a look at where they are financially compared to everyone else. The only ones who cared about their perception of social and business status are themselves. Falls from grace now or being looked at by the majority of their community without that community wearing rose colored glasses is no surprise to anyone but themselves. Such is the price of egos and arrogance. We are what we choose in life. A few more election rounds and a few more running into brick walls on local boards and major policy and project issues just might be enough of a wake up call. They'll find nobody really cares.

How many businesses have come and gone in the past 4 years in downtown? One is too many. How many have come and gone in 81601in the past 14 years? One is too many. There's some comedy relief going on out here with the rest of us watching how fast those groupies are dropping off. Welcome to the real world, Glenwood Springs. You are no longer the respected bank, the law firm with the most longevity and earned place in trust. Your non-profit board has been shown to be the least prestigious in town and one or two of your sitting council have shamed us all with what they plaster all over the worldwide web. We have no respect and no trust left in our law enforcement as a whole and rely on only individuals in that community for our security. Our backs have been bowed carrying your lack of performance for anyone but yourselves and your bottom line prosperity.

Think this pathetic 1.7% increase means anything to the majority of your citizens? It doesn't because it's not news. We haven't seen any real gains in this town in years and have the lack of growth and sustainable, revenue generating infrastruce to prove it.

The only real question is this:

We've been cleaning house of you for a couple years now and are ready to speed that process up. How about you? Are you ready to get rid of dead weight yet or do you still see some manna milk to squeeze out of us and have a few more burdens to toss on our working backs?
