SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Daily News "Caloia to challenge Beeson in DA race"

(See recent related stories and recent public commentary here, here and here)

Chad Abraham:
"Saying she disagrees with the philosophy of the 9th Judicial District prosecutor’s office, a longtime Glenwood Springs lawyer is challenging the re-election bid of District Attorney Martin Beeson.

Sherry Caloia, who has practiced law for 30 years and been a Glenwood resident since 1988, said Tuesday that it was a difficult decision to enter the race.

But Beeson’s statements about the role of defense attorneys, his appeal of a judge’s sanctioning of the Aspen DA’s office and certain prosecutions she finds questionable all led to her decision to enter the race, she said.

The 9th Judicial District encompasses Pitkin, Garfield and Rio Blanco counties.

Ironically, the man she is challenging might not be the top prosecutor had it not been for efforts by Caloia and others to recall the previous district attorney, Colleen Truden, in 2005.

Caloia, 56, organized the petition drive that led to the first recall in Colorado history of a district attorney. Several deputy district attorneys, including Beeson, resigned rather than continue working with Truden. Among the criticisms of Truden were allegations of financial and ethical improprieties.

But Caloia, a defense attorney who also serves as municipal prosecutor for the towns of Basalt and Carbondale, said her efforts then were strictly on the petition effort.

“I didn’t help him get elected,” she said of Beeson, a Republican. “I think he’s a good man, and I respect him ... but I didn’t work on Martin’s campaign.”

Caloia, a longtime Democrat, said the political party in Garfield County lobbied her “very heavily” to throw her hat in the ring. But the issues are not strictly political, she said..."  (Read more? Click title)

First buzz on Sherry stepping up is all positive for success but all apprehensive on anybody supporting her being retalitated against. Hard to know how to help except to cast conservative vote for her, a liberal.

The legal communities, cops and civic leaders of all 3 counties who want him out need to take the lead and get the real record and stats made known. If they make this about the truth and keep him from vengeful and personal it will be easier on the voters that support the cause.

Sherry's got to be feeling apprehensive and I think she's smart for saying up front she's not looking forward to it. The thing she's got to remember is that there isn't a DA in history of the 9th district that the folks are more ready to get out of office. If we're all lucky they'll take the court option fast and nobody has to go through it.

I can estimate a few dozen names right off the top of my head that send a thank you for stepping up.

I do not envy Sherry Caloia this race. Martin Beeson, if the looks of the PI this morning are a barometer doesn't appear to have learned a thing over the past 7 years. Still is about the arrogance and ego he projects when challenged in any way and brings nothing of substance to the fore. It has not been difficult for the citizenry to watch the courts fill with a large majority of losses, major and violent crime to escalate to the largest proportions ever in the district. Shocking philosophical declarations that have grabbed national attention and an obvious use of the office as a stepping stone to career politics. We have unheard of monetary outgo for high profile cases that should never have been brought, such as Lofgren. Historic sanctions from his own judges with Martin Beeson refusing to look to the issues of those sanctions.

I look to the smart, fast and clean route of taking Martin Beeson out in the courts for the illegal race he is trying to run. If not Sherry Caloia doing that then it is time for the local attorneys (it is far from being just defense attorneys from what we gather in listening out there) to take this into court and end it. His arrogant statements the other day against Tom Silverman that he is letting the voters decide if it's an illegal term or not in November is a statement of idiocy coming from the top attorney in the 9th district. Since when do voters judge the laws on the books? Sounds like he stands in fear of doing the honorable thing which would have been to solicit court opinion up front and prior to casting in. But then, that is the modus operandi for Martin Beeson, isn't it? Convict first, investigate later.

Good luck to Ms. Caloia on her race. She can now count on my wife and I as two more conservative Garfield county voters.

And there lies the answer to the right path to victory for Caloia, RL. When you know him personally, he's a nice, fun guy. Good family man and fits the good old boys club that is Garco GOP. But Martin shoots himself in the foot everytime he opens his mouth when it comes to his politics and zealot philosophies. Martin can't help himself and will do a mighty fine job of showing that problem each and every time he is challenged to bring just the facts without the spin. I'm a conservative and registered republican in Rio Blanco. Not an attorney either. I will not be voting for Martin and will be voting for anyone but. Even if outside of party. My decision is based on performance and respectability for the district. Get him into court on the illegality of his race. If wishes were horses, area GOP would get an alternate lined out right now rather than end up with a democrat holding the critical seat. Right away lay out a course in front of the district's voters that reveals every fouled case, every violation of procedure, exact accountings of investigation costs and most importantly, challenge that rutting display on his website of declared wins. In Snider alone, Martin Beeson savagely disgraced the state when it was unnecessary to put any through it. For a self-declared Christian man who touts an agenda of morality based war against all accused, Martin falls far short in real performance to back up all that talk. The district has spent millions over his tenure that could have been knocked down to the hundreds of thousands and had the same effect. I have no desire to assist Martin in redeeming himself after his insight that he would lose to Tipton. With any luck, the courts will take him out quickly as we will not be so fortunate again to have our district attorney with that same enlightenment. Good luck to Sherry Caloia with still yet another round of thanks from a family of conservatives in the 9th district.

Just like public fund tourism dollars, I want to see the ratio of actual costs broken out in detail, on every investigation that ate up more than 40 hours of combined prosecutor, cops, federal time, courts and support staff including state funded defenders and all expenses incurred for each one of those. For the entire elected cycle. That ratio then held up against the chest beating record Mr. Beeson is so proud and loud about. Then I'll decide where to cast my vote. Republican born and bred. Tea Party till I die. To borrow from you, Mr. Beeson. Time to "put up or shut up" (Post Independent)

Will sure be nice to get a district attorney back in again that our judges and cops know they can trust in their output.

disgusted, fed up and had enough said...

Full transparency and accountability for the public trust and public money aren't concepts. They're requirements of the job. From day one we heard Martin Beeson pull the politician's hat trick and blame his deluged departments on his predecessor. When hit again with it looking like the direction of the voting public was returning back to wanting a detailed look minus the obvious confidential case's data, Martin Beeson softened his tone and became the white hat concept. Still no love bringing forward anything. Then as these kinds of public problems always go, the pressure to see what was under what actually was starting to look like a gray hat mounted and we ended up with finally seeing the eye opening reveal into the morality of our district attorney's regime. Personal declarations of war against the constitution and peers does not a prosecutor make. Then for the past two years plus we've seen Martin Beeson grow increasingly resistant to any transparency at all. I found it to be a real enigma to have him decry closed door policies in another district while all the while our district has the feeling of the entire third floor of the county seat sealed with closed ranks under fire. There will be a below zero temp day between now and election day before we see any details out of Martin Beeson. To do that is to lose. Or we'll finally see them in a new district attorney after. Full transparency and accountability for the public trust and public money aren't concepts. They're requirements of the job. With two seats in Garfield under heavy fire on BOCC the question of why Martin Beeson hasn't been made to be accountable in his own county is waving out there like a red flag. Sherry has my vote hands down. I'm not an attorney and I'm not a democrat. Don't use my comment as an excuse, DA Beeson. It's not political at all. Just a voter wanting answers.

With regard to all emails, etc. etc. asking why I have not posted Anita Sherman's letter to the editor on 4/24 in the PI:

First, in case you missed it:
http://sandboxcommentators.blogspot.com/2012/04/sandboxblogs-note-from-nanny-some.html

Second, I do not consider it fair to toss up a banned troll's ongoing public statements into this forum where she wouldn't be able to defend herself. Ms. Sherman is not welcome here, she is aware of that and my take on the situation is that she doesn't care to participate in this critical of her and her views hub. win win. It is very rare that any of her content posted elsewhere will be tossed up here.

Third, Tom and Jane Ashworth are held in high regard by SandBox and I believe most commentators who pass through here. Yes, they have expressed a view in the PI today that is not accurate regarding the Snider trial. But, they are directing that view toward Anita Sherman. I personally think the Ashworth's are entitled to their opinions and should be respected on the expression of those opinions. After all, getting it right 98% of the time so far is a pretty good record.

Please refresh (or become aware of in case you missed the earlier publication of the above link) your memories of all rules, regs and current policies of this hub during the remainder of this political season.

There wouldn't be a purpose or a need to give the likes of Sherman an ounce of ink, or expose the good people like the Ashworths to anything they may have inaccurate if the entire record of Martin Beeson was brought to light. All of it not just what he wants believed.

Sherry Caloia and the democrats do that and then keep that record glaring in the spotlight until elections and get him into court in front of a judge on term limits, no more good people have to be exposed to anything to do with his regime.
