There are a number of hot races for district attorney in the 2012 election cycle. Whether contested races or not, it has been quite awhile since there has been this much controversy in Colorado's judicial system.
From Sheriff races at mid-term (statewide), to prison closures and now the politics of prosecutors; the folks are far from happy if the pulse and tone of commentary is any barometer.
The 10th Judicial District is so far the nastiest and most sordid of DA races this time around. Coming up right behind the 10th is the 18th Judicial District.
From the sound of things, more of relief than anything else as the highly controversial Carol Chambers is out due to term limits. Chambers is the DA that made national news recognition by paying her deputy DA's bonuses for convictions. Rather fitting now that the contenders for the 18th plead their cases to the Statesman at the Arapahoe GOP Men's Club...

At a breakfast debate held at the Arapahoe County Republican Men’s Club in Greenwood Village early Wednesday morning, the four GOP candidates pled their cases.
Matt Arnold, a judicial accountability activist and candidate in the CU Regent At-Large race, moderated the debate. He will not be endorsing a candidate in the primary.
All four Republican candidates plan to go through the assembly to earn the party’s nomination, but both Brauchler and Wareham have begun petitioning as a backstop measure in case they fail to receive the 30 percent threshold for delegates.
The district attorney for the 18th Judicial District oversees Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln counties.
The seat has been held since 2005 by term-limited Republican incumbent Carol Chambers.
The race has attracted well-qualified candidates on both sides of the aisle. Ethan Feldman, who served as a judge in Arapahoe County for over 20 years, is the only Democrat currently in the race....."

SandBoxBlogs: Pueblo Chieftain "Caucuses signal tough Democratic primary season"
As anticipated, it looks as though 10th Judicial District Attorney Bill Thiebaut and the race for the District 1 County Commissioner seat down in Pueblo are going to be tough races. Thiebaut surprisingly lost key support to Jeff Chostner at last night's Democratic Caucus.

"On the district attorney's race, Vincent Guerrero announced that he was supporting Chostner.

"...But Koncilja's departure came a week after testimony from a current and a former deputy district attorney that painted him and the district attorney's office in a negative light. Their testimony also suggested Thiebaut didn't have a grasp of case law governing criminal procedure.
The hearing was for a request by Public Defender Adam Schultz to dismiss a murder case against Puebloan David Carrillo.
The hearing involved the creation of a memo discussing the truthfulness of a police officer at the scene of the crime. The memo was created at Koncilja's instruction, who then asked it be kept secret from other attorneys in the office.
Both Deputy District Attorney Steve Jones and former lead prosecutor Steve Cornetta said the memo represented a pattern of behavior in which Koncilja would do investigations into cases without attorneys' knowledge, kept files on his investigations and would, at times, refuse to allow lawyers in the office to access those files.
The Carrillo hearing is scheduled to resume in February....."

What about the accused, David Carrillo? And the alleged victim?
That seems to be a question that's been completely lost in the war going on down in the 10th Judicial District.
There are a couple of judicial districts in Colorado that have heated battles stirring in the races for District Attorney.
In the eyes of voters in commentary, there couldn't be a more opportune time than 2012.
There is little doubt anywhere that a conservative will win the Presidential Election. And that there will be major uprooting in Washington, D.C.
The folks are fed up. Had a belly full and just not going to take it anymore. On the other hand, not one of these politicians schmoozing for our votes right now are looking ahead at how the states are going to handle having what they want dumped right in their laps.
What's going to happen when the State of Colorado has all the handling of education, human services and immigration placed into their hands and out of the hands of the feds?
For a long time, the folks have been hollering that they think politics should be removed from anything that is tied to their physical safety and security. Primarily, the offices of Sheriff and District Attorney. That Judges should be the only ones needing to receive a nod from the folks.
There could not be a better example of outrageous government conduct than Democrat Bill Thiebaut. He's the 10th's current D.A. and recently rose up in public scrutiny over his involvement in congressional redistricting issues. This is a public official who has made no bones about the fact that he is using the Office of the District Attorney as a political stepping stone.
Nothing wrong with that, many D.A.'s do same.
But what happens to accused David Carrillo? What happens to the alleged victim?
The folks would like to know.

How far does the reach of one community's politics go?
In the case of the 10th Judicial District, statewide.
DA Bill Thiebaut and Pueblo Commissioner Jeff Chostner are in a heated and rapidly turning into a bloodbath race for District Attorney in the 10th.
Thiebaut is also the Democrat that's been taking no prisoners in the statewide congressional redistricting battle. He's brutally outspoken, cutthroat in his politics, far, far left in the political world and obvious to us as holding high political ambitions.
Pueblo is located in the third congressional district which is 'our' district over here in Pitkin and Garfield counties. We all share Congressman Scott Tipton (R-Cortez).
Thiebaut, as District Attorney, started off as a very bright star for the democrats. His tenure as D.A. in the 10th has grown to be one of the most criticized and scrutinized in the state. Any news print, blog post statewide or radio interview holds a great deal of uncertainty that he will win against Chostner. The race at this point, has already reached deep personal attacking and brutal exchanges.
With still a year to go before the 10th Judicial District will have peace again.
Thiebaut, in our view, is an interesting guy to try and figure out. On one hand, he seems to have no care or concern for the integrity of how he and his staff appear to the public. On the other hand, he seems to err on the side of caution such as in his latest decision to appoint a special prosecutor to stave off any concerns of potential mistrial. The battle between Thiebaut, his staff and defense attorneys is epic with few to no cases running smoothly.
A fact that Republicans are all over him on as he helps lead the way in the congressional redistricting battles.
"The mother of all wars" is a saying launched by the Koch brothers a few months back.
The reference was to the Presidential election in November 2012.
We disagree.
"The mother of all wars" started some time ago and its battlefield of choice is every local political arena in the nation.

The beleagured DA of the 10th Judicial District, Bill Thiebaut (D), is rarely out of the news the past two years.
Now in what is shaping up to be one of the hottest political races in the state, Thiebaut is trying to save his seat as the 10th's district attorney.
There is one pattern in his style that is not likely going to change.
Which just may end up being to his detriment politically.

The Pueblo Chieftain and the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel are where one goes to take the political pulse of Colorado.
The Denver Post and The Colorado Independent, to most Coloradans, are more where you go to find out the spin, hyperbole, daily trash talk and have a good laugh when Colorado's political atmosphere is hot.
The old war horse Chieftain pegged this race for 10th Judicial District DA as one that would probably set in the record books as an all-out fight to the last vote.
Sure enough, it's shaping up to be exactly that.
And we still have over 13 months to go.
"..And Thiebaut disputes Chostner's claim that the city's crime rate is twice the state's, noting that former Police Chief Jim Billings said the statistics from that study were based on flawed data.
Finally, Chostner said a recent controversy in the murder trial of David Anthony Carrillo is emblematic of his criticism of how Thiebaut's office handles cases.
"Here's a case where he's not giving discovery in a timely manner," Chostner said. "That's the kind of mismanaging of cases I'm talking about."
Thiebaut's office has been accused by Carrillo's public defender of failing to disclose and possibly covering up a memo from a police detective that suggested a report by another officer at the crime scene was false.
Thiebaut maintains that there was no discovery violation. The memo was handed to Carrillo's defense team the day before a preliminary hearing and he continues to claim Public Defender Adam Schultz is trying to force a favorable plea deal for his client.
Thiebaut also claims there are ethical considerations about commenting on or trying to influence an ongoing case that Chostner, as an attorney, should know about.
Thiebaut laments that his office doesn't seem to be given the credit for high-profile victories in court, including a conviction of the so-called "Ether Man" — Robert Howard Bruce — for trying to kill a Pueblo police officer, and the conviction of Paul Wayne Stark for raping and killing 14-year-old Ashley Patterson of Pueblo West..."
