"Each day, Jim Precup of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission logs about 400 miles criss-crossing the oil and gas fields of northeast Colorado.
“It’s absolutely staggering,” he says.
Not just the mileage, but also the workload.
Precup has to supervise his agency’s inspectors, but because there are so many wells, he’s also in charge of inspecting 12,000 himself.
“It’s not an easy job, it doesn’t suit everyone,” Precup said one early morning after making a quick coffee run at the Johnson’s Corner truck stop off Interstate 25 in northern Colorado.
From there, it was east into booming Weld County, where he spends most of his days.
Drill rigs, storage tanks, hauler trucks seem to be everywhere once you’re east of I-25 in the county; now home to one of the highest concentrations of oil and gas wells in the country. Drilling operations are sandwiched between homes, schools and stores and in the middle of farm fields.
Precup hops out of his truck to have a look at one of them. Inspectors can show up whenever they want, unannounced, and he climbs a ladder to the top of a large green, well tank. Precup pops the hatch to one of the tanks’ lids and peers inside.
He’s looking for potentially harmful gasses escaping from the well itself, and for spills seeping into the ground that could contaminate water below.
Things here look pretty good.
“All of this stuff is looked at by an inspector at a glance, just like that,” Precup says clapping his hands together. “Five to seven minutes we’d assess this, another 10-15 minutes we’ll be onto our next one....”

One of the things that Sonja Linman could do for Garfield County is help facilitate a middle ground for conservative values and liberal values when it comes to the subject of hypocrisy.
Oh, how these radical extremist groups moan and cry over loss of funding to county needs and citizenry. Pretty baseless when you think about that. Since pretty much everything is funded by property taxes. Who pays millions of dollars per year in property taxes? Why, it is the oil and gas industry!
Oh, how the vulture capitalists (we do have a few if we would only be open about it) thump their chests and holler when the tax bill comes. Who is it that generally always pays their taxes on time and is glad to lend a hand bringing jobs to the area? Why, it is the oil and gas industry!

"At the mention of taxes, no one groaned or even flinched Tuesday at the Anadarko Petroleum Corp. regional office in Evans.
Instead, government and community leaders gathered to applaud the largest tax payment Anadarko has made to Weld County — $52 million in 2011 property taxes — with an oversized check and cake.
And Anadarko wasn’t event the largest taxpayer in Weld.
Noble Energy paid $57 million in 2011 property taxes, said John Lefebvre, Weld County treasurer. Together, those two oil and gas companies paid 25 percent of the total property taxes collected by Weld County for last year. The deadline to pay was Monday.

"Weld District Attorney Ken Buck and the DA’s office donated 733 pounds of food to the Weld Food Bank in September as part of Hunger Action Month.
“My office takes pride in doing great work both in and out of the courtroom, and the food drive is no exception,” Buck said in a news release. “I have always felt it is important to be a good neighbor in the community — both as an individual and as an agency. My employees feel the same and are always participating in events that benefit others in Weld County.”
The 733 pounds of food to the Food Bank, surpassing last year’s office donation by 236 percent, the release stated.
In addition to the canned food drive, the DA’s office, which employs about 70 people, sponsors an annual school supply drive, annual blood drive and participates in numerous other community activities, the release stated.
The 2011 donation brings the office’s donation total to the Weld Food Bank to 1,278 pounds of food, according to the release.
