SandBox Comments: Vail Daily "Firefighters rescue dog from frigid water in Avon"

Aren't they awesome?  Don't we have the very best first responders there are, right here at home?

Thanks so much to Eagle River Fire Protection District firefighter Jesse Monaghan.

Please remember, no matter who has fallen in, the rules about ice:

• Ice is only a temporary change in the top layer of a body of water. The water beneath ice is so cold you cannot maintain your core body temperature.
• This directly affects your strength, mental capacity and the ability to get out.
• Untrained rescuers often become additional victims.
• If you don't know if ice is safe, stay off.
• If you see someone in the water after falling through the ice, call 911 and maintain eye and verbal contact.
• If a pet falls through the ice and cannot get out, so will you.
• Always call 911.

SandBox Comments: Aspen Daily News/Letter to the Editor "A sheriff’s gratitude"

"Editor:

Some people say the best way to test a service or product is to use it.

Unfortunately, last Thursday night Marcy and I had the opportunity to test the service of public safety in Pitkin County. A defective furnace filled the upstairs of the house with smoke. Marcy called 911 and within minutes the Aspen Police Department, the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department and Aspen Ambulance responded to our home.

For over 30 years I have seen these people at work. However, it’s different when your life, home and property is at risk.

I’ve always known how competent and professional all of our public safety agencies are. This time I got to test the product as a customer.

I am more confident than ever this community has very dedicated, prepared professionals serving us. We want to say thank you to all of our public safety professionals.

(Marcy DiSalvo and sheriff Joe DiSalvo, Aspen)

SandBox Comments: Vail Daily News "Local paramedic program gaining national attention"

If we remember correctly, it was a visiting Brit EMT, last year, that gave this idea to the Vail community.

It's amazing how popular the concept has  become.

Wouldn't it be terrific if all of Colorado adopted this type of paramedic  program?

Not only from the standpoint of how much good they would accomplish, the cost savings to the public from avoiding the emergency room visit is significant.

Good report from Derek Franz.  Over  on the Vail Daily News.

Thank you to our Grand Junction Fire and Rescue team, 'Loomis' isn't the only one who appreciates you.

"GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - A Grand Junction man experienced some tense moments after his beloved dog Loomis fell through the ice at the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife pond near Rimrock.

It happened just before 4:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.

Tor Larson was hanging out at the pond with his dog Loomis, when the retriever mix ran onto the iced-over pond and fell into the water...."
