"SILT, Colorado — The town's Board of Trustees meets tonight at Town Hall to debate whether to renew more than 75 “net mineral acres” in natural-gas leases to the Antero Resources drilling company.
Town administrator Pamela Woods said the three-year agreement will bring in “about $180,000 a year” to the town's coffers.
The lease, which expired on April 29, gave Antero the right to drill for natural gas deposits deep underground in several areas within the town.
A map of the lease areas is available from Town Hall.
The measurement “net mineral acre,” according to a memo from town attorney Lee Leavenworth, is used when rights are owned by more than one party.
Leavenworth wrote that, for example, if the lessor owns 100 percent of the minerals underlying one acre, that equals one net mineral acre.
But if only 50 percent of the minerals underlying one acre are owned by the lessor, that constitutes half of a net mineral acre.
Leavenworth's memo did not contain any breakdown of the town's mineral rights ownership.
According to Leavenworth, the town first signed a lease with Antero in 2005, for a period of three years...."

"...The leasing prospect has become synonymous with “poisoned water supply” and earthquakes and fracking. None of these events are likely, at least in the Crawford area. For instance the Crawford Town Council is concerned that the town’s spring and water supply will be contaminated. However, according to several reputable petroleum geologists, there is almost a zero chance that any wells would ever be drilled on the flanks of Landsend Mountain. In addition the stratigraphic section that would be penetrated by any wells in the Crawford area does not lend itself to any unconventional resource which might need fracking in order to produce oil and/or gas.
I live in this county, have two grandchildren that live in this county and care about its natural resources and its future. My background includes managing a substantial pollution prevention program for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for eight years and working in the oil and gas industry for 10 years. Following is the letter I submitted to the Bureau of Land Management.

SandBox Comments: Grand Junction Daily Sentinel "Residents around Paonia fight drilling plans"
'SandBox Nanny' grew up on Kebler Pass in Colorado. Paonia on one side of the pass and Crested Butte on the other.
The most gorgeous, private and incredibly diverse area in Colorado. Spectacular country.
Anyone who intimately knows the land in question here would be protective from anything that would bring it harm.
And she is all for these leases being granted.
As long as when the deal is made the developer follows the lead of Bill Barrett Corp. and their Jack Canyon and Desolation Canyon project out in Utah.
As long as they follow the lead of EnCana and reclaim the land when done.
There needs to come a time in our history here in the United States when senseless environmentalism is brought to a halt. When frivolous and repetitive litigation by environmental groups that fail to do their full research before filing and/or refuse to look at any other view other than their own demands is stopped completely.
Compromise and the best interests of all can be found on middle ground. Desolation Canyon and companies such as Bill Barrett Corp and EnCana prove that.
Just say YES to the granting of these leases. Work out a deal that wins for all and then spend your time making sure that deal is upheld rather than spending it in court.

Let me get this straight: Our senators are actually telling the BLM to not make a decision on allowing SG Interests to create a prudent plan for oil and gas development so that there can be “robust and meaningful discussions?” Really? Why are Senators Bennet and Udall trying to insert themselves in the BLM’s operational procedures? Which in turn is delaying a routine decision by the BLM, putting SG at risk for not being able to develop the resources and setting a dangerous, uncertain, politicized precedent whereby any elected official could stop development of our oil and gas resources just because they don’t like it. Bennet and Udall, this project is in our best interest. And when I say “our” best interest I mean the public — you know, the people you are supposed to be representing. Step out of your political posturing mode for just one minute and do what’s in the best interest of the public. Allow the leases to move forward. Paula Scanlon, Grand Junction"
How good it is to see folks speaking up in opposing voices to powerful environmental groups that have long held a monopoly on local press coverage.
It's not going unnoticed that they feel the most comfortable with either starting off on or just staying on The Aspen Daily News. Our only locally owned and operated print news media.

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "BOCC endorses Thompson unitization request"
Aagghhh.....(SandBox Nanny)....sigh....rolls eyes.....
John Colson: "Federal land managers should move ahead with a “unitization” request for natural gas leases in the Thompson Divide area, no matter what Colorado's two U.S. senators have to say on the subject, say the Garfield Board of County Commissioners (BOCC)...."
Maybe because it's not political and the majority of Garfield County do not appreciate the bullying tactics of the groups trying to block?
Or, maybe because people in the region have become more confident in speaking out?
GarCo BOCC is finally hearing their voices and responding to more balanced community needs?
John Colson: "Udall and Bennet have asked that the unitization request be opened up to public involvement, while the industry believes it should remain an administrative decision made by officials in the BLM."
Thanks to Scott Tipton (R-Colorado) the public does have a major voice with open talks on Thompson Divide.

Our Third District Congressman?
The folks are sure glad he's around.
After all, The Thompson Divide Coalition, Senator Mark Udall (D-Colorado) and Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colorado) have never held any kind of public meeting that was not heavily seeded to anti-industry.
