It is also about who we elect to represent us in government. Many conservative politicians want to dismantle all regulations and give industry free rein to do as they please without any or little regard to impacts on workers, families, our children, and our environment.
After World War II, the greatest generation helped build our nation into a great place to live and prosper. They fought for worker protection, equality, and justice. They enacted environmental protections and ended legally sanctioned discrimination. They gave us great public schools and universities that opened the doors of opportunity for many of us without saddling us with a huge debt at the onset of our careers.
Fast forward to the present. Conservative politicians demonstrate more allegiance to Grover Norquist and billionaires than they do the good of our country. They promote discriminatory immigration policies, propose eviscerating environmental protection laws, propose selling our public lands to the highest bidders, eliminate worker’s collective bargaining rights, and demonize our teachers. All this in a concerted effort to privatize just about everything.
It is all about where we live and the political fallout is now in your backyard....."

SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Times "Bag ban spawns boycott"

I am astonished at the complacency that the Aspen community has shown with the plastic-bag ban that has been implemented.
The fact that every week council members continue to come up with feel-good pet projects such as this to make our lives just a little bit more difficult baffles me. To top it off, you smack us in the face with a tax for option No. 2: the paper bag.
Have any of our elected officials ever visited the markets in Aspen in the winter when the guests arrive? They must not have noticed it's a madhouse. I can't wait to see the reaction next winter from visitors who spend thousands of dollars for their vacations, go shopping and spend hundreds of dollars on food and then discover they will be charged for bags.
I also suppose council asked the cashiers and baggers what hurdles they would have to overcome due to the regulation. The fact of the matter is this is just one more environmental elitist idea that will have little effect on the environment. Unfortunately you will still see bags hanging from trees and blowing in the wind from time to time. So pick it up, recycle it, and move on!
Every week I take my recyclables to the Aspen recycling center, and the plastic bags are overflowing out of the cans. That's how aware our community is about recycling. A friend of mine made a great point the other day. If council wants to reduce a local carbon footprint, why not look at something as wasteful as the snowmelt sidewalks and driveways? How many of the houses in the area sit vacant through most of the winter with snowmelt running through a snowstorm? Not only would we burn less coal to power the systems, but we create jobs by hiring local companies for snow removal. Makes sense, right?..."

SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Times "Troubled by Basalt criminal activity"
A little over a year ago, 'SandBox Nanny' received a thoughtful, appreciative and detailed email letter from a follower.
This individual has been writing their frequent letters to the editor in the valley for many years. Long, long before SandBoxBlogs or SafePlaceBlogs ever came to be. (Notice the present tense, yes..they are still at it.)
Their purpose in sending the letter was to share a long laundry list of 'saved' news stories off the (mostly, there were a few other regional media enclosed as well) PI and the Aspen Times.
Amazing (stunning in some cases, actually) how the past that plays such a role in the present has been 'tracked' by area news media, despite their very best efforts to quash a number of issues. The content of the tracking system in their letter was fascinating reading material!
Lest we 'forget', let's walk back to the fairly recent past and talk about the old Members Hub for a bit.
Checking in on the comments to Nancy Heard's letter to the editor today up on the Aspen Times would be a good stop for you to head to first. Click title.
Granted, Nancy may not have communicated her 'snark' as well as she might have, but the point is that Nancy Heard obviously cares about her community and is obviously noticing some patterns that should be concerning to all. Regardless of your political views, etc. etc.
Who knows why Nancy decided to try a letter to the editor. Let's toss a hypothetical out. Let's say Nancy thought she would give the Times another try because things seem to be better and more open to unbiased, uncensored channels of communication. Let's say Nancy is paying attention to her valley wide goings on and thought that just maybe..there was room for her voice too in an environment where she wouldn't be targeted by the old 'bad' or 'predator' style 'trolls' from the old Times members hub.
After all, they have to login with DNA now. No 'room to hide' as the Times and PI are so fond of using as an excuse for their own shortcomings in handling responsibility.
Have we now gone full circle for the Times and the PI, folks?
Blatantly obvious from the growing numbers of alternate media and chat forums that it was a huge mistake censoring and banning the voices of the folks.
Acute awareness, given the failure of their new comment system, that they didn't hold as much of a commodity on the market out here as they thought. Heck, it's doubtful that they will ever get the 'good ones' back on again. Even if they nix the DNA login.
Keenly aware, that the level of discussion they do get when the sparse few logon, is sorely lacking in both content and attention-grabbing power.
But, the hypothetical today is a blast from the past regarding chats, good trolls, bad trolls, predator trolls and the overall sense of security and wellbeing of the folks when it comes to local news media. Not the blind eyes of Swift management.
Moderation works two ways.
The first is the elimination of content that is undesired. Such as rudeness, swearing or whatever the forum rules and regs do not allow.
The second is to protect the person whose voice might not be the most popular in content or person. The concept of a watering hole is that everyone gets to belly up.
What a shame that sitting around the Aspen Times newsroom today are lazy journalists and writers who could care less about Nancy Heard's viewpoint (or) Nancy Heard herself. Just letting her letter shift for itself and/or not bothering to join in the dialogue. Gosh, there must be major, attention grabbing goings on in Aspen today and they must be way too busy to participate.
To mimic some of the more dramatic commentators that drop by: "Are we forever doomed to be stuck in their version of what gets censored and banned...and what does not?"

In recent years, all within a half-mile radius of our house we have experienced: shooting at 7-Eleven, armed robbery at Clark's market, a sex offender stalking kids as they leave school (yes, my kids walked right past his car), three suicides, two overdose deaths and a felony embezzlement charge. Has it occured to any "Aspenite" yet, that for all technical fact purposes, retired attorney Maurice Emmer is an "outsider"?
Just think. Seriously.
That every view he has ever written, every blog he has created or contributed to, every organization he has joined, every time he has had (dare we say it in a 'family' forum??) the cajones to walk in and sit down with the 9th Judicial District D.A. and query exactly 'why' law enforcement hasn't stepped in on some of the valley's abuses that are going on.....is an "outsiders" untainted view of the social, political and public interests plight here in the Roaring Fork Valley?

Aspen is a progressive city. Now it has discovered the most progressive approach yet to city government.
It appears that our councilmen have already made a decision on an upcoming item for the March 12 meeting (overturning Ordnance 30 or bringing it to a public vote) one week early! And without the messy distractions of a meeting, public discussion and a public vote (see Aspen Daily News, March 5).
I applaud the council for expediting the process and would like to suggest that they do this from now on for every agenda item. In fact, who needs agendas? Gone are the four- to five-hour council meetings with tiresome presentations and endless musings by the mayor about threats to his idyllic vision of Aspen from all manner of selfish capitalists. With this new, expedited approach, council meetings could be done and over with in a matter of minutes.
Better yet, just cancel the meetings altogether and have Grassroots televise our great leader every other Monday at 5 announcing the new rules, guidelines and public projects that have already been passed and implemented...." (Read original letter? Click title)

SandBox Comments: Aspen Times/Letters to the Editor "Unfair treatment by Skico"
"Dear Editor:
It is unfair that Lee Mulcahy, after a year, is still banned from all Aspen Skiing Co. properties, including restaurants, lodges, the four mountains that Skico leases from the Forest Service, etc. Lee's crime, for which he was also fired after 14 years of service, was to protest low, unfair wages for beginning employees (about $69 per day). A lift ticket for a day is $108. He also brought up unionization.
Just like Occupy Wall Street protesters, Lee had to be crushed by a greedy corporation with the cooperation of a compliant legal system. It is clear that government works to protect corporations. Meanwhile Aspen builds employee housing, at taxpayer expense, to subsidize Skico so it can continue to pay low wages.
It is time that Skico officials lifted the ban on Mulcahy so he can ski Aspen's mountains and socialize with his friends on Skico properties. He is a great person who had the courage to speak out when he saw injustice.

And then there are those out in the public commentary that have spent the last few years pushing away the denial of local governments and power brokers to the point that when they speak up, the entire valley listens.
Who needs the Steve Skinners and SandBoxBlogs of the world when we have Bruno Kirchenwitz?

"...In short, our view is that city law applies, and it does not require even the requested registration at this time; that state law does not apply because Aspen is a home rule municipality. The city has a somewhat different view. Both views are based on reading the law. We voluntarily met with city legal officials to discuss our respective views, as we understand this is a complex area of law on which people can disagree in good faith. The correspondence between the city and us is public record; anyone who wants to know the facts about our discussions can get the letters and read them.
Instead of allowing the matter to be resolved in an orderly and professional manner by competent city officials, our mayor preempted and interfered with the activities of professionals in City Hall by writing letters to the papers “demanding names.” When asked for the legal authority for his demand, he produced none and said that isn't his job. He has told us what is “customary” and that we know the law as well as he does.
We can't confirm the mayor's legal knowledge, but we certainly do know the law; we read it and are following it to the best of our ability. The mayor, meanwhile, tosses around baseless demands and makes up imaginary legal requirements. Maybe that's OK for a partially informed reporter, but unseemly if not downright improper for a mayor.
We are resolving any differences with the professionals in City Hall, who also have read the law. If the mayor wants to be city attorney and city clerk as well as mayor, he can eliminate three jobs in City Hall and save the city some money. One way in which the mayor could accomplish this is to imagine some other non-existent law he can accuse City Hall professionals of violating and fire them. Or maybe, he ought to let professionals do their jobs and let citizens work with City Hall professionals to resolve routine matters courteously."

SandBox Comments: Aspen Times/Letters to the Editor "We want names"
Almost impossible anymore to find news articles that quote Mayor Mick Ireland that reveal his thinking before he speaks.
How about we set aside the obvious in this latest from Mayor Mick to the editors of both Aspen papers today? That obvious being the fact that the hydro project dust-up is not a voter's ballot and to compare the two in relation to laws, ethics, rules, etc. is not only ludicrous it is rather bizarre. (Does make for a 'good' (?) jab at his nemesis Marilyn Marks though, doesn't it?)
And instead, let's focus on where Mick's angst likely lies.
In the fact that this pet project has turned out to be one that he can't simply ram down the throats of the folks up in Aspen and Pitkin County.
They have something to say and are willing to put their money up to have the freedom to say it.
Could they possibly desire anonymity so that they are socially safe from these kind of 'persuasion' tactics of powerful people?
This is not a popularity contest, it's a development project controversy. But if it was, Mick.
You probably would lose.

That obvious being the fact that the hydro project dust-up is not a voter's ballot and to compare the two in relation to laws, ethics, rules, etc. is not only ludicrous it is rather bizarre. (Does make for a 'good' (?) jab at his nemesis Marilyn Marks though, doesn't it?)
And instead, let's focus on where Mick's angst likely lies.
In the fact that this pet project has turned out to be one that he can't simply ram down the throats of the folks up in Aspen and Pitkin County.
They have something to say and are willing to put their money up to have the freedom to say it.
Could they possibly desire anonymity so that they are socially safe from these kind of 'persuasion' tactics of powerful people?
This is not a popularity contest, it's a development project controversy. But if it was, Mick.
You probably would lose.

SandBox sends out a thank-you to Steve Falender.
Surely, we have enough divisive energy floating around the local governments that we do not need more from Mayor Ireland.
Very refreshing to hear someone stand up to him.

I was on the lift at 8:30. Beautiful day. No crowds at all. Bluebird skies. Very warm.
After skiing Snowmass, I thought it may be time for a name change. There is a famous bluegrass song from my home state of Tennessee. So let's change the name to “Good Old Rocky Top.”
I'm out again this week, but this time instead of taking my ski poles, I take my weed eater...."
