SandBoxBlogs: The Hill's Congress Blog "Our fallen heroes remind us of our greatness"

Sen. Joe Lieberman:
"This past August, I attended the funeral of Brian Bill — a Stamford, Conn., native and Navy SEAL who perished along with 29 other American service members and eight Afghans when their Chinook helicopter was shot down during a rescue mission in eastern Afghanistan.

Bill was a remarkable young man who led a life of service, achievement and significance. He was an accomplished skier, mountaineer, pilot and triathlete. He was fluent in French and self-taught in Russian. He had plans after completing his military service of going to graduate school and becoming an astronaut. For Bill’s future, the sky had no limit.

Above all, Bill was a patriot. He made the choice to dedicate his life to a cause greater than himself, and that cause was our country.

On this Memorial Day, we remember fallen heroes like Bill — a pantheon of extraordinary American men and women whose service and sacrifice span our history and have, quite literally, made America possible. From the beaches of Normandy to the orchards of Kandahar, from Bunker Hill to Chosin, and from Little Round Top to Sadr City, we owe our liberty and security as a nation to the courageous Americans who never came home from these places, and to those heroes — family and friends, neighbors and strangers — who survived....."  (Read more?  Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Craig Daily Press "‘Where I was meant to be’: Craig resident keeps family close to heart while serving in Afghanistan "

Joe Moylan:
"On May 1, President Barack Obama marked the one-year anniversary of U.S. forces locating and killing Osama bin Laden by visiting Afghanistan.

In a televised address from Bagram Air Base, Obama discussed an agreement he signed with Afghan President Hamid Karzai to pull U.S. combat forces out of the country by 2014.

But, the president also pledged to continue to send an undisclosed number of soldiers to train Afghan forces and carry out limited counterterrorism operations until 2024.

For the next 12 years American servicemen and women will continue to travel to a far away country to engage the enemy, leaving behind friends, family, husbands, wives and children.

On April 28, three days before the president's address, Pfc. Ethan Tyrel Robinson, 21, of Craig, was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan....."  (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Colorado Statesman " How long can troops remain loyal to a leader who shows little loyalty towards them? "

Miller Hudson:
"During the Watergate fiasco, one interview stamped itself on my memory. Larry O’Brien was the national chairman of the Democratic Party, and it was his office that was broken into by Richard Nixon’s “plumbers.” O’Brien had a long political career in Massachusetts which concluded with his appointment as the manager for both John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson’s presidential campaigns. Johnson had rewarded him with an appointment as U. S. Postmaster General. While Nixon’s men scrambled to escape the tightening noose of Congressional investigations and impeachment subpoenas they engaged in an unseemly display of finger pointing as they tried to heave one another beneath a tsunami of criminal indictments.

O’Brien was asked what would have happened if a similar disgrace had unfolded in the Kennedy White House where he served. His reply was enlightening. He said, “Six Irishmen, myself included, would have marched onto Pennsylvania Avenue and thrown ourselves on our swords and that’s the last you would have ever heard about it.” He went on to explain that these willing volunteers would have served out their federal prison sentences in silence, and none would have yammered on or written books about who was responsible, who was to blame. This scenario stands in stark contrast with the criminal scrambling to cover their tracks evidenced by Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Liddy, Dean, Mitchell and others...."

SandBox Comments: Aspen Times "Wounded warriors in a therapeutic setting"

"...After all her work, Volf said the numbers still leave her staggered. She said of the hundreds of thousands deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, more than 5,000 have been killed and 45,000 have returned with permanent disabilities.

Volf hopes that these wounded warriors are honored for their sacrifice and is grateful that her program and Challenge Aspen is located where it is.

“I am very motivated to keep this program going within Challenge Aspen,” she said. “This is such an accommodating place. This community is so accepting.”
Challenge Aspen will host a fundraiser from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Jimmy's An American Restaurant & Bar in Aspen. The event will include hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, music and a raffle..."
