Kim Fuller:
"BEAVER CREEK — It's hard to catch your breath when you're climbing a mountain, jumping into icy water, lugging logs, crawling under electric wires and swinging from dangling rings. Tough Mudder promises a challenge, but what the event delivers is an experience that can only be felt in the grips of its course.
Mark Lepczyk and his friend Chris Vail came out from New Mexico for this year's event at Beaver Creek. Lepczyk said it was harder than he anticipated.
“It was my first Tough Mudder and it was definitely a humbling experience, especially that first mile,” Lepczyk said. “You just go straight up the mountain, and you get winded really, really quickly. It doesn't go away, either, because you're going up the mountain for the next six miles or so.”
As humbling as this event truly is, it's even more uplifting. Spectators lined a large portion of the course on Saturday, offering encouraging shout-outs and generous hand-slaps.
Participants also helped each other tremendously on every obstacle, as well as on uphill battles and downhill trudges. It's the cooperative energy that seems to set Tough Mudder apart from most endurance and adventure events like it.
“You come out here and everybody's participating and everybody's helping you. Everybody just wants you to succeed,” said Bobby L'Heureux, a Vail resident who completed this year's endurance event. “You see people at obstacles waiting and helping other people up for 10 minutes. People aren't worried about time, they're worried about helping the other player in the game.”...."

SandBoxBlogs: Summit Daily News "For nine wounded warriors, a relaxing retreat with family"
Kathryn Corazzelli:
"Gunnery Sgt. Chadd E. Jackson of the United States Marine Corps is a hard man to keep down. In February 2005, Jackson and six squad mates were returning to Camp Fallujah in Iraq when they were hit by a roadside bomb. Flying shrapnel severed two major nerves in Jackson's arm.
The injuries Jackson sustained from the blast seven years ago were many and permanent, and the nerve damage in his right arm brings pain that surgeries have failed to halt. He sustained damage to his spinal cord, requiring surgery to implant a stimulator, which helps alleviate constant pain. He also suffers from traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic-stress problems. Despite everything he has been through, Jackson remains on active duty and was recently promoted.
Jackson, his wife, Darci, and their three children will arrive in Breckenridge tonight for a week of skiing and counseling courtesy of the Wounded Warrior Family Ski Week, a local program paying homage to injured veterans.
The project provides a week of retreat in Summit County for permanently and severely injured service members from the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts and the global war on terrorism. Now in its fifth year, Wounded Warriors is bringing nine veterans and their families — chosen from a pool of 54 — from all over the country for five half-days of skiing, four mornings of meetings with mental health professionals and one day for fly fishing, ice skating or whatever else the soldiers choose. Everything — from the airfare to lodging and instruction on the slopes — is free for the recipients....." (Read more? Click title)

SandBox Comments: Aspen Times "Wounded warriors in a therapeutic setting"
"...After all her work, Volf said the numbers still leave her staggered. She said of the hundreds of thousands deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, more than 5,000 have been killed and 45,000 have returned with permanent disabilities.
Volf hopes that these wounded warriors are honored for their sacrifice and is grateful that her program and Challenge Aspen is located where it is.
“I am very motivated to keep this program going within Challenge Aspen,” she said. “This is such an accommodating place. This community is so accepting.”Challenge Aspen will host a fundraiser from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Jimmy's An American Restaurant & Bar in Aspen. The event will include hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, music and a raffle..."
