Kristen Lodge:
"January weather hit a low of 40 below in Alaska, then a warm spell hit when they arrived. Minus 10 was the lowest temperature the team encountered, he said.
“The weather was similar to Grand County, but there were no storms or wind. We were as lucky as we could get so we enjoyed it more.”
After the first day riding 80 miles they were exhausted.
“It could've been much worse if we didn't have the training. Until you actually do it, words can't prepare for how hard it was,” said Tarr.
Team members Tarr, Bruce Knight, Kevin Cox and Cory Ziegle — all from Grand Lake — started the race, but after mechanical problems only Tarr and Knight made it to Nome and the finish line.
On day one Tarr dropped into an 8-foot creek. It took 45 minutes to get out. After an 8-hour riding day they got stuck twice. On day two, near the Happy River, it felt like they were on Mars, Tarr said. This is where Kevin Cox earned his nick-name — MacGyver — when he wired back his machine. The failure on Cox and Ziegle's snowmobiles was due to a bolt sheared off from damaged rails. On day three they needed to make it to the next stop that had an airport to fly the machines out...."

"The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race ended last year for 2004 champion Mitch Seavey when he nearly sliced off one of his fingers while opening a bale of bedding straw for his dogs.
If the 52-year-old veteran Iditarod musher runs into trouble on the trail this year, he can count on family. His father, 74-year-old Dan Seavey, ran in the first Iditarod in 1973 and can provide inspiration.
Mitch’s 25-year-old son, Dallas, can provide a competitive push if he can catch him, which remains to be seen.
“My goal is to win the Iditarod,” Mitch Seavey said...." (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Steamboat Today "Oak Creek musher Tom Thurston on his way in Iditarod"
"Steamboat Springs — Oak Creek musher Tom Thurston said he was gunning for a top 20 finish in this year’s Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska, and Saturday, he was well ahead of his goal.
Through the first leg of the 40th annual Iditarod, Thurston was fourth. Of course, it helped that he started fourth and that the leg, which cut 11 miles through downtown Anchorage, Alaska, was only ceremonial.
Thurston, his 16 dogs and the 66 other teams in this year’s race will get down to the real race starting Sunday in Willow. It will be the first real step toward the finish line in Nome, nearly 1,000 miles away.
Racing the event for the fourth time, Thurston enters with much greater expectations. He’s finished twice, including last year when he hoped only to make it to Nome and to build his team’s experience...."

SandBox Comments: Steamboat Today "Oak Creek resident Tom Thurston’s Iditarod send-off is Thursday"
Joel Reichenberger:
"Steamboat Springs — There’s no rest for the weary, at least not for Oak Creek musher Tom Thurston.
Routt County’s most prolific marathon musher is set to depart for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska with a send-off party from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Rex’s American Grill & Bar in Steamboat Springs.
The party comes less than 48 hours after Thurston wrapped up his run in the Race to the Sky dog sled race in Montana. He’s won the event before but finished fifth this year, using the race more as a finale for what’s been a winter of training in Montana than as a true test of his team’s speed...." (Read more?
