SandBoxBlogs: Fox News "Putin opts out of G-8 summit, cancels meeting with Obama"
"WASHINGTON – Just days after reclaiming the Russian presidency, Vladimir Putin has canceled his planned visit to the United States, where he'd been scheduled to attend a major economic summit and meet with President Obama.
The White House confirmed in a statement late Wednesday that Putin told Obama on a phone call he'd be sending Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in his place. Putin claimed he was too busy finalizing cabinet appointments to make the May 18-19 G-8 Summit at Camp David. Yet the Obama administration had moved the gathering to the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland from the planned venue in Chicago partly to accommodate Putin.
Whether or not the schedule change marked an intentional snub, the let-down comes less than a week after the nation's military chief of staff warned that Russia would consider preemptive strikes, if a dispute with the United States over a Europe-based missile defense system worsens...."

SandBoxBlogs: Fox News "At least 7 killed in blasts in Afghan capital, as Taliban says attacks a response to Obama's visit"
"A suicide car bomber and Taliban militants disguised in burqas attacked a compound housing hundreds of foreigners in the Afghan capital on Wednesday, killing seven people, officials and witnesses said.
The Taliban said the attack was a response to President Barack Obama's surprise visit just hours earlier.
At least 17 people were also wounded in the assault, most of them Afghan children on their way to school, the Interior Ministry said.
The second major assault in Kabul in less than three weeks, the attack highlights the Taliban's continued ability to strike in the heavily guarded capital even when the city is on its tightest security for a combination of events -- the Obama visit and Wednesday's anniversary of the killing of Usama bin Laden in neighboring Pakistan.
The attack started around 6 a.m. in eastern Kabul with a series of explosions and gunfire ringing out from the privately guarded compound known as Green Village that houses hundreds of international contractors.
Shooting and blasts continued for hours later as militants who had stormed into the compound held out against security forces, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information....." (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Fox News "Top EPA official resigns after 'crucify' comment"
"A top EPA official has resigned after coming under scrutiny for 2010 remarks in which he compared the agency's enforcement strategy to Roman crucifixion.
Al Armendariz, the top environmental official in the oil-rich South and Southwest region, resigned in a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson on Sunday, saying he did not want to be a distraction for the agency. The resignation is effective Monday.
"As I have expressed publicly, and to you directly, I regret comments I made several years ago that do not in any way reflect my work as regional administrator. As importantly, they do not represent the work you have overseen as EPA administrator," he wrote. "I take great pride in having built a career based on integrity and hard work. These are the principles that guide me personally as well. While I feel there is much work that remains to be done for the people of this country in the region that I serve, after a great deal of thought and careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that my continued service will distract you and the agency from its important work."...."(Read more? SandBoxBlogs: Fox News "Obama paid lower tax rate than secretary"
This news still does not let Romney off the hook for consistently paying lower rates than average workers nor does it come as a surprise that Obama is not practicing what he thumps on his campaign pulpit.
What it does do is put both candidates on the same exact footing with regard to their tax returns.
Could that possibly mean that voters do not have to listen to further rhetoric from either of them on the 'evils' of their personal finance choices?
Probably not. Unfortunately, it's still a long road to November.
"President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama had a combined income of $789,674 in 2011 but paid a lower tax rate than the president's secretary, who made less than $100,000, the White House confirmed Friday.
The Obamas paid an effective rate of 20.5 percent. White House aides would not reveal presidential secretary Anita Breckenridge’s tax rate but confirmed it was higher than the first family's rate. Breckenridge earned $95,000 last year.
The Obamas' rate is less than the 30 percent the president wants millionaires to pay under his proposed Buffett Rule.
“The president’s secretary pays a slightly higher rate ... than the president on her substantially lower income, which is exactly why we need to reform our tax code and ask the wealthiest to pay their fair share,” White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage told Fox News....." (Read more? Click title)

Charges against four of the five were based on a conspiracy case filed in New York federal court, FoxNews.com has learned. An indictment charging the suspects, who include two men from Great Britain, two from Ireland and an American in Chicago, is expected to be unsealed Tuesday morning in the Southern District of New York.
“This is devastating to the organization,” said an FBI official involved with the investigation. “We’re chopping off the head of LulzSec.”....." (Read more? Click title to original article)

SandBox Comments: Fox News "1 Dead, 1 Wounded after ICE Agent opens fire at Federal Building in California"
"The gunman died at the scene and the wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition.
Authorities released no details about what led to the initial shooting or the names of the dead gunman, the victim or the agent who fired the final rounds.
The Los Angeles Times, citing multiple law enforcement sources, said the initial shots were fired by an agent at his supervisor during an unspecified dispute.
There were conflicting early reports about the number of people shot, with local authorities saying two were dead and one wounded, while ICE said one was dead and one wounded.
The shooting happened on the seventh floor of the Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building in downtown Long Beach that houses ICE, the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Probation and Parole Office.
The wounded agent is hospitalized in stable condition, said ICE Special Agent in Charge Claude Arnold.
"At times like this words honestly seem inadequate. When something like this happens in our offices, it's incomprehensible, Arnold said.
Along with the FBI, the shooting was being investigated by ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility and Long Beach police...." (Read more? Click title)

SandBox Comments: Fox News "Calderon Appeals for More U.S. Focus on Drug War Amid Fresh Violence"
'glenwoodsprings22' :
"I think you're right, nanny. Too late to change this poll but they could run another one asking if the people want a bigger stick and staying the course. I've got $5 on that number being above 80% of the population. Mexican Presidente was on FOX. Almost begging for US help with the brutality of the Mexican cartels. The hypocrite still had to imply his political ilk that legalizing was the way to go. But has completely backed down on pushing now that he's at the point of begging for help. If Perry was in office the boots on the ground would have that big stick. This is the worst it's ever been. I for one am not willing to risk my family and loved ones to do a trial spin on legalizing heroin, coke, meth and rec pot. It's like the situation with illegal aliens. We have got to stop the problem and put it to a grinding halt before we can find out what works for long term. It's about the law. " (Learn more?
