Lincoln's idea and action was simply this: Once elected, Lincoln brought together his former GOP competitors (each representing a political faction in the country) and created a united force that ultimately healed the divisions in the land and propelled America forward.

some day in the usa we'll be able to pull off bipartisanship. until we get cleaned up and have healthy governing with states having the bulk of the power and federal government having far less than they do now, that's not going to happen. sad but true.
