Jason Blevins:
"DUMONT — Facing yet another challenging year for whitewater rafting, two veteran Colorado outfitters have joined forces to create a company that is moving well beyond boats.
With its five whitewater options, three biking excursions and two zipline courses between Glenwood Springs and Idaho Springs — including Colorado's longest tower zipline complex, over Clear Creek — the new Colorado Adventure Center represents the growing model for all-in-one adventure shopping....."

SandBoxBlogs: KREX News 5 "Hickenlooper Vetoes Bill to Provide Tax Incentives for Tourism"
Kristina Kuestner:
"DENVER- Gov. John Hickenlooper vetoed a bill Friday that would have impacted multiple cities throughout the state, including Montrose.
SB 124 would have expanded tax incentive programs for tourism projects across the state
Hickenlooper said that his decision was made because the bill would have replaced the 2009 Regional Tourism Act, which allows two large scale tourism projects a year for over three years.
The Colorado Regional Tourism Act would have allowed all six projects to be funded at once.
According to the Denver Post, Hickenlooper said allowing more than two projects to be considered per year could be risky and could increase the chances for mistakes....."

SandBoxBlogs: KREX News 5 "Colorado Town Makes List of 'Best Small Towns'"
Why isn't Glenwood Springs tourism marketing capitalizing on all that the entire State of Colorado has to offer?
This is a day and age where families, if they have decided to spend precious funds on a vacation, are going to not stay in just one place. They are going to experience all they can that is family oriented.
Regional tourism marketing and promotion is the key to success.
Congratulations to the City of Durango for capturing not just one small town label but the whole enchilada.
Christina Marrazza:
"DURANGO, Colo.- A Western Colorado town has earned a spot on a list of "Best Small Towns in America."
The list, compiled by Smithsonian Magazine, features towns with tons of culture and a population under 25,000.
Durango earned the No. 6 spot on the list. With a population of nearly 17,000, the old railroad and mining town celebrates life Western-style.
Its lamp-post lined historic district, "Music in the Mountains" festival and a theater showcasing both melodrama and vaudeville are all reasons it was selected...." (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Summit Daily News "Lawmakers salvage state tourism budget"
Caddie Nath:
"Despite a multi-million dollar dip in revenue, lawmakers proposed a slight increase in the state's tourism budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. The bump would bring the budget up to more than $13 million.
An initial proposal from the state Joint Budget Committee will supplement the normal tourism budget with an additional $3.7 million. Without the extra cash, the gaming-tax funded tourism budget will fall to $9.6 million next year from just over $12 million this year and $20 million a few years ago.
“Tourism is such a huge share of our Western Slope economy,” said Rep. Millie Hamner (D-Dillon). “It's critical for us to continue to invest in it.”...." (Read more? Click title)

SandBox Comments: Mountain Mail "Council approval creates downtown creative district "
Cailey McDermott:
"Salida City councilmen unanimously approved forming a creative district in the downtown area for increased grant opportunities during their meeting Tuesday.
Since passage of House Bill 1031 last year, the state has been encouraging communities to designate creative districts.
The district will benefit Salida by attracting creative entrepreneurs and artists, creating hubs of economic activity and showcasing artistic events.
Dara MacDonald, interim city administrator, said SteamPlant employees submitted a grant Jan. 30 to the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade to enhance the downtown creative district...." (Read more? Click title)

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Report questions Colorado tourism incentives"
It's a shame this snafu had to come up and off-color the good works of the Regional Tourism Act.
One also has to wonder why Glenwood Springs, New Castle, Silt, Rifle and Carbondale are not on board with seeking out funding for tourism related infrastructure.
How long will it take before we stop relying on sole source lodging taxes in these communities to fund our need for tourism and related economic development? Start going after programs like this, more GoCo funds and other grants that just might be out there if we were to devote a dedicated tourism/economic staffer to look.
Avatars in commentary are so vocal over this issue and still our leaders spin wheels in 4lo. Here's another year of possible funding simply passing us by.
"...DENVER--Gaylord Entertainment Co. and the five other applicants for state tourism incentives overestimated the number of new visitors their projects would bring to Colorado and, as a result, the amount of tax-increment financing they're eligible for, according to reports by the state's independent analyst.
The reports were prepared for the Colorado Economic Development Commission, which will decide in April which projects receive state tourism incentives. The state hasn't released the reports, but the municipalities applying for incentives provided copies to The Denver Post on Monday.
Several applicants said the consultant — Economic Planning & Systems Inc. — misinterpreted the Regional Tourism Act. Enacted in 2009, the RTA allows a portion of state sales taxes generated by a project that advances tourism to be used to help finance its infrastructure...."
