Angela Scott:
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.-TBD Colorado, a statewide conversation around some of Colorado's largest issues, opened its multi-region public summits on Saturday in Durango, Glenwood Springs and Pueblo.
TBD, also known as "To Be Determined," was the name given to a non-partisan group formed by Governor Hickenlooper to tackle tough political issues.
The five areas discussed during the group's Western Slope visit were education, health, transportation, the budget, and workforce issues.
"Even though the the TBD Colorado board came up with these five issues, the people through the regional meeting said the other issue we really want to talk about is the state constitution. So today we're also talking about the complexity of the state constitution and what needs to change or not change for us to move forward," said Paul Alexander, a member of the Lead Facilitation Team for TBD Colorado...." SandBoxBlogs: KREX News 5 "Two Women Arrested for 2.6 Pounds of Meth"
Kristina Kuestner:
"MESA COUNTY, Colo.- A routine traffic stop leads Grand Junction Police to two women transporting 2.6 pounds of methamphetamine.
According to authorities, that's $60,000 in street value.
According to the arrest affidavit, at around 8 p.m. Thursday, a Western Colorado Drug Task Force officer pulled over Elizabeth Valdez on Interstate 70, because she was traveling in the passing lane and never returned to the right lane.
After pulling Valdez over, the officer noticed the high mileage in only a couple of years, and told Valdez that a ticket would not be written, but asked to search the vehicle.
It was then that the officer discovered the 2.6 pounds of meth in a white pillow in the back seat of the car.
Elizabeth Valdez and Agnes Ahn, the passenger and owner of the vehicle, both 23, are each facing one count of unlawful distribution, manufacturing, dispensing, sale or possession..."

SandBoxBlogs: KREX News 5 "District Attorney Motions to Dismiss Charges Against Kirk Firko"
After all DA Pete Hautzinger put Gene Lawyer and his family through, it hardly seems just or anywhere near fair that the likely real culprit of Kirk Firko escapes without a trial.
Unlike Trooper Lawyer's posts where SandBox blocked public commentary for the sake of Lawyer and his family, comment ability on this highly political move of Hautzingers is wide open.
Cori Coffin:
"MESA COUNTY, Colo.- A CSP trooper involved in a deadly shooting may no longer be prosecuted.
Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger has filed a motion to drop all charges against Cpl. Kirk Firko.
Firko was accused, along with State Trooper Ivan Lawyer, of negligent homicide and felony trespassing in connection to the shooting death of Jason Kemp.
Earlier this month, Lawyer was acquitted of all charges relating to Kemp's death.
Firko's trial was set to begin July 16.
In the motion to dismiss, Hautzinger said, "The people conclude that there is not sufficient reasonable likelihood of a Mesa County jury being unanimously convinced beyond a reasonable doubt of defendant Firko's guilt to justify going forward with another lengthy jury trial."
The DA went on to say that even though the people believe they don't have a case against Firko, the motion to dismiss is in no way an endorsement of Firko's or Lawyer's actions and the legality of them...."

Courtney Griffin:
"MONTROSE, Colo.- Downtown Montrose is blossoming with new events, farmer's markets and stores this summer.
Scott Shine, manager of the Downtown Development Authority, says within the last couple of months, it’s really become the place for people to be. “We've had some businesses move into the district that were operating outside of downtown that have come downtown to be a part of what's happening down here, so we think that's a positive sign.”
With vacant building signs vanishing, the downtown area is a place where people can go shopping, look for home décor and enjoy eateries.
One business owner who has been downtown for 30 years said in the past couple of years business has really picked up. “It seems to be picking up every day. We see people from out of town shopping and I’m very encouraged by the traffic that we’re seeing," said Glee Westcott, owner of Tiffany Etc.
With many new events going into the downtown area, one event in particular will be going on all summer long. Main in Motion is an event starting June 7 and brings between 3,000 and 5,000 people every Thursday, lasting until August 23....." (Read more? Click title)

Danielle Kreuther:
"GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The U.S. Department of Labor has provided more than $200 million in grants to help raise technical skills of U.S. workers.
Workforce officials say these grants are made with the goal of raising the skill levels of U.S. workers. The hope is that this will not only reduce the number of foreign workers being hired for high skill, high paying jobs in the U.S., but also make local businesses more competitive.
"The technology now coming out, a lot of times requires upgrading your training on a regular basis, so if we're able to provide that training, it keeps our local companies competitive," said Suzie Miller of the Mesa County Workforce Center.
The USDOL is helping foot the bill for that training by giving $5 million in grants to help train incumbent workers in Colorado.

SandBoxBlogs: KREX News 5 "Billion Dollar Proposal Aims to Bring Tourism to Montrose"
Wow.
Even Montrose looks like it is standing a chance at blowing right by the tourism marketing and resulting revenues of Glenwood Springs and Aspen.
That puts Vail Resorts being bolder to the east of both, Grand Junction, Mesa County and Powderhorn's snag of minor sports and infrastructure to the west of both and now Montrose, Telluride, Monarch and Wolf Ski Resort to the south all having far greater ability to draw in sustainable, major and regional tourism venues than anything Glenwood Springs or Aspen currently have going on.
Cori Coffin:
"MONTROSE, Colo.-There are 1,500 miles of recreational playground in Montrose County. "We've kind of adopted a theme of 360 degrees of adventure, 365 days a year," said Richard Harding, a member of the Montrose Citizens for Funding Our Future (MC4FF).
MC4FF is a group that has been working with commissioners for the past three years to create the largest undertaking ever attempted in the county. "(It involves) 141 projects with a billion dollar plus price tag over the next 30-35 years," said Commissioner David White.
The group's goal is to turn the tourism climate around in the county that has a nearly 20 percent unemployment rate.
According to the Department of Local Affairs, Montrose has only 6 percent tourism employment, versus 48 percent in surrounding counties. "If we're able to get up to the same level as those other counties, we're looking at over 16,000 jobs created in the tourism industry," said Harding.
Officials hope to bring new attractions to, as well as revamp existing attractions in Montrose County, such as "the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. I mean that's an underutilized asset," said White.
"Montrose County is the only place in the United States that has a National Wilderness Area combined with a National Conservation Area combined with a National Park and combined with a National Recreation Area," added Harding.
Other projects include recreational items such as kayak and rock climbing facilities, "making it an alternative destination to Moab," said White....." (Read more? Click title)

Former top guy at Vail Resort, Andy Daly has taken Powderhorn (in just one season) into the upper rankings of ski destinations in Western Colorado. Now aiming for year round access, local families are looking forward to what comes next.
Congrats to Powderhorn Mountain Resort.

"MESA, Colo.- Powderhorn's first year under new ownership is coming to a close this weekend. After a long winter, that looked bleak for snow for a long time, General Manager Daren Cole said, "We've been extremely happy with the delivery we've been able to put out there to the community."
Powderhorn was purchased by Andy Daly as well as Tom and Ken Gart last summer at auction for $1.4 million. Since then, there have been numerous improvements at the resort, including the construction of a new deck at base lodge, renovations at the Sunset Grill and the addition of a tubing hill.
