SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Cheney heart cartoon despicable"

Do you ever wonder if Swift Communications, who owns the GSPI, really knows the type of 'news' they engage in on most days?

The display allowed by Twitter last Saturday was unconscionable.  Troubling to think we have similar right here at home.  Thank you to Sharon Brenner for speaking up.

Sharon Brenner:
"The cartoon the Post Independent printed on March 29 regarding former Vice President Cheney's heart transplant is absolutely despicable, and the paper owes its readers a front page apology. This comes from the same side of the political spectrum that called for more civil discourse after the shooting of Rep. Giffords in Arizona. This is also from the same political orientation that discussed the shooting of Trayvon Williams, but has remained silent about the public issuance of a bounty, without a trial, by the New Black Panthers.

It's the typical liberal double standard: Do as I say or we will get you, and we welcome diversity as long as it is saying the same thing I believe...."  (Read original letter? Click title)

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Clarifying county's $1M for Silt infrastructure"

All it would take to permanently stop the tabloid journalism at the Glenwood Springs Post Independent is for every leader we have to do what Garfield County Commissioner John Martin does in this letter to the editor (and) what our local police chiefs did over CIRC's assault on our SRO officers.

Just stand up.  One of the reasons our authorities have so many folks living in the shadows throughout the area is because certain media has become emboldened to the point that causing harm to individuals and the image of our communities is now common place and seen as an entitlement of sorts.

Sooner or later, the word will continue to get back to the PI staff's employer, Swift Communications, and we'll have a full-time respectable local newspaper once again.

A thank you goes out to Garfield County Commissioner John Martin this morning for standing up and calling a spade a spade.

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/John Colson "Company criticized for waiting to inform Silt Mesa residents"

Here they are again.  The group known as "Some Silt Mesa residents".

What's the whine about this time?

That they still don't have a hand-holding babysitter to personally inform them when public meetings are held on issues of  interest to them.

It's either the fault of the GarCo BOCC, the oil and gas companies or the dereliction of duty by Silt Mayor Dave Moore.  Always the same old whine that someone else should be responsible for coordinating their activism schedules.

Here's a bold, cutting edge concept!!  Give it some thought!

Ask your local newspaper and investigative reporter John Colson to start covering all the news and then print details of schedules and meetings in the local newspaper.

(whisper...whisper...did he even try to think before he wrote a title like that one??...isn't that what the press does is inform??....whisper...whisper...)

A special thank you goes out to Antero Resources.  For once again having the patience of Job and for all you do to try to meet all community needs.

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Garfield County restates goals in new manager search"

At least there is the word "restates" in the header.

The recent giant expose' of the GarCo BOCC by local media seems to now be complete.

See related story here.

In addition to repeating, for the sake of front page and viral link bait marketing of their output  by Swift Communications and  their GSPI, what our BOCC had already publicly stated  in casual output regarding their county manager requirements; stealth reporters with unlimited ink supplies have also milked a second viral ready article from Mr. Stroud today on the 'subterfuge' of our BOCC:

"Garfield commissioners commit to more openness in county government"

There is one bit of true news in all this.

After literally years now of complaints, the county is finally updating the audio recording equipment that records all of their meetings for public access.

Thanks, GarCo commissioners!

SandBox Comments: Aspen Times " Bad reporting by Times"

Kendrick Neubecker, Carbondale:

"...He focused almost exclusively on two small moments that came during the question-and-answer period. Paul Menter was right to deflect what seemed more a personal attack in order to focus on the issues. Maurice Emmer's comments were a small part of the discussion yet occupy nearly a third of the article. And please tell me what the importance of Emmer's having “recently moved to Aspen” is in this discussion? That's irrelevant, unless you are more interested with obfuscating gossip rather than the issues.

Toward the end of the piece Salvail finally addresses some of what the forum was really about, but then only to repeat the falsely reassuring and inaccurate message from the city's side of the issue. The article never mentioned any of the points I made refuting the city's position, nor did Salvail attempt to speak with Menter or me afterward.

There was a serious and rich discussion of the real issues for nearly two hours, all largely ignored by Salvail. Did the article report on the city's mistaken characterization of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's licensing process? No, nor the correction that I offered. Did the article cover the discussion of stream ecosystems and the city's inadequate studies or monitoring program? No. Even the fact that the city has failed to hold up its part of a 14-year-old agreement to install stream gauges was ignored....."
