SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Legalizing drugs will only make addiction grow"

Zell Zordel:
"Why is it that when the debate about legalizing drugs is mentioned, the drug war card is played? That's because it's a crutch. Now that it is out, let us address it.

Yes, America is encouraging other countries to participate in the drug war, with $40 trillion spent since 1971. In 2010 alone, the U.S. government spent $15 billion. The reason those laws were passed is because drugs were killing Americans. With the first laws passed in 1885, this is not just a 40-year-old issue.

Those are facts. Let's look at a few others.

My original letter of May 19 was about the real potential in human lives lost. I compared it to the very real and highly used drug, alcohol. I used that baseline to show the ever-so-likely outcome we would experience if we legalized drugs. I pointed out that all of the negative criminal impacts will not go away.

Mr. Kirchenwitz, in his May 24 response, commented that “any drug use in and of itself is generally non-violent.” I suggest he ask any law enforcement officer who has ever had to deal with a violent suspect what was driving the destructive intent. Most will respond with drug use or alcohol.

Remember, drug usage is still currently at a low level. Legalization will only increase the number of addictions due to easier access....." (Read more?  Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Correct the letters containing false information"

(whisper...whisper....when is the new publisher coming to town??!!....whisper...whisper....(yes, this is a 'whispering campaign').....the little guys can hardly wait to hear if she's a real journalist who believes in standards and ethics of her industry...can hardly wait to see if she's got some moxy to stand up and just say NO to the unbridled bias, so much worse than the worst of the worst tabloid output the PI's grown famous for over the past 10 years....whisper.. whisper...can hardly wait to see if she's got a price on her soul just like Swift reporters, editors and publishers to date have had and used to sell themselves and the communities they serve down the river with nearly every edition...whisper...whisper...can hardly wait to see if she has a sense of humor and can read something like:....... "Editor's note: The Post Independent offers a forum for diverse opinions on this page. We do reject some letters that contain incorrect information, but other letters blur the line between fact, perception and opinion. We encourage our letter-writers to respond and correct what they see as errors."....(btw...the 'shadow folk' will now write in and correct your errors today, TYVM).... and laugh as hard as most are laughing today at the PI...whisper...whisper...wonder what she's going to be like.....whisper...whisper..well, we can only hope.....)

Hmmmm....let's see.  As an attorney, Ted Hess should appreciate Just the Facts, right?

Let's toss a few up:

  • Setting aside the shameless use (actually in some of his press over CIRC, The Strawberry Days Massacre of 2011 and Norma Galindo Morales Gonzales the "outrageous use" is more accurate) by Ted Hess of the biased media outlet known as the Post Independent; this LTE could be seen as laughable.  At minimum, preposterous with little to no credibility.  Funny how that works and backfires on someone who manipulates and spins disinformation out onto the web.  Credibility when they want it can never come back in hand.

  • Let's toss out some facts about illegal foreign nationals and the methods they use to abuse our system, our people and our laws:    Public education is a good one----every single time they sign a child up for school and declare themselves as legal citizens with a legal address they commit blatant fraud.  Gets worse when that fraudulent act of signing a registration form "earns" federal tax dollars for the "body count" of their child.  Even worse when that child then goes on to gain access to more public funds, grants and otherwise of scholarships and services.  Another good one is how much every illegal on  American soil costs every single legal American household to provide them with basic services such as public education, law enforcement, emergency services, human services and public services.  In 2010, the estimate ran right under $1,700 per year, per legal household.       Another great fact is one that can be tracked back to one of Ted Hess's own clients and his family.  David Centeno.  The cost for law enforcement, judicial system, incarceration and deportation (multiple times on all) came out of legal American pockets.  Another terrific fact can also be tracked back to one of Ted Hess's clients.  Norma Galindo Morales Gonzales and her problem with ID.  Every single time an illegal gets behind the wheel of a vehicle and drives on American soil, they commit an illegal act.  We cannot even track the cost of traffic and accident related burden that illegal foreign nationals place on legal American shoulders every day.  There you have it, a few 'just the facts'.
For me, the most outrageous hypocrisy spoken regarding  "immigration reform" is the hypocrisy spoken by people like Ted Hess who should know better.

Here is a respected in many areas and ways local attorney, who spouts rhetoric so lacking in credibility and thrusts his cases into the media while at the same time, for every moment of air time he takes up, there are the most inhumane methods of human trafficking happening simultaneously on our borders that Ted Hess says nothing about.

Maybe a lot less talk on Ted Hess's part and a lot more action in getting safe and secure borders would be a better use of power.  Secure the borders and stop the deaths and exploitation.

For sure, every legal American footing the bill for the media circus surrounding 'immigration reform' would be highly appreciative of finally being able to end the problem and finally sit down at the table and work out true and humane reforms.

In the meantime, the ongoing local media circus that is CIRC, AJUA, Ted Hess, Anita Sherman's and reporters hanging on every word is at least 'entertaining'.

And keeps all of us on our toes making corrections to his output in that media circus he cultivates.

Immigration Attorney, Ted Hess of Glenwood Springs:
"Shame on the Post Independent for publishing Mike Johnson's letter of May 26. Mr. Johnson, of De Beque, asked the rhetorical question, “Can anyone explain to me why the illegal-undocumented aliens get all the welfare and assistance they need?”

Undocumented aliens do not receive food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Medicare, Medicaid, Children's Health Insurance Program, Section 8 Housing, Social Security or SSI. (Source: Guide to Immigrant Eligibility for Federal Programs, 2002, National Immigration Law Center, as updated by NILC Oct. 2011.)

Any rational resolution of our immigration debate is retarded when the paper publishes letters that use inflammatory and false facts. I thought the editor had the ultimate responsibility for what runs in the newspaper. If you are going to persist in permitting people to publish demonstrably false factual information, how about printing a correction under the letter?...." (Read the original letter?  Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Reasons to leave the Democrats"

This Letter to the Editor from liberal Chad Klinger feels like manna from heaven.

Thank you, Chad!

Chad Klinger:
"In his letter “Reasons for Leaving the Republican Party” on May 12, Thomas Rutledge describes his “awakening,” after 45 years, to the realization that the “Tea Party, Paul Ryan, Ayn Rand, Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, fundamentalist Christian” party has no place for him.

I've had a rather different epiphany. Having voted for Johnson, Carter and Clinton (twice), I now find myself viewing Democrats as the party of Saul Alinsky, Frances Fox Piven, Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayres, Van Jones, ACORN, anarcho-communist Occupiers, atheists, abortionists, shameless corruption (The Chicago Way), fiscal insanity (The Sacramento Way), Big Brother (in every way Orwell imagined), racism (the anti-white Justice Department way), class envy and class warfare.

Not only does this party have no place for me, I feel that it despises me because I'm white, Catholic, and an advocate of individual freedom as underwritten by the United States Constitution. Most of all, because I believe in America — what's left of it.

I remember the days when people complained that there were no real differences between the two parties and their candidates. To be sure, whomever we elect, it's always greatly about money and power, but factoring out such human constants, there sure are differences now."

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Questioning PI's judgment"

Respectfully written in to the PI by Kathryn Trauger:
"In the Tuesday, May 1, edition of the Glenwood Springs Post Independent, there was a lovely, very large picture of chickens on page one. Don't get me wrong, I love animals and birds.

However, on page two was a very tiny (less than 1 inch-by-1 inch) picture of an at-large bank robber. While the quality of the photo was probably not great, since it was a surveillance photo, there was almost nothing distinguishable in that tiny photo.

I am questioning the journalistic judgment of the Glenwood Springs Post Independent editorial team. How can a chicken story that is going to appear in a later edition and a bag ban in Carbondale be more newsworthy than an at-large bank robber? This is just one more example of poor journalism that is currently displayed by the editorial team at the Post Independent."

Apparently mocking and feeling like a drip of sarcasm and arrogance; the Editorial/Publishing staff at the PI's response:
"Editor's Note: It was indeed debatable whether it was worth running the tiny, low-resolution photo of the bank robbery suspect, but if there is even a slight chance that doing so might help the case be solved, then it was worth it."
(Read the originals?  Click title)

Hmmm...another milestone in the mass exodus  of lost readers and subscribers from Swift's Aspen Times, PI and Citizen Telegram happens when?  Right. This week.  May 4th.

What changes can everyone expect to see at the PI?  That is the only one left in the local Swift family that needs to finally finish cleaning itself up.

The Aspen Times made the break last year.  Still has issues but that's ...well,  Aspen.  Consumers expect the output from the Times.

Citizen Telegram under Mike McKibbin has shot itself out of a cannon and is going strong again.

The PI has been obviously reluctant but still cleaning up, slow but sure.  Forced by the powers that are or by such negative input from the community?

Nobody has really cared, because the change is obviously not permanent and the ink still runs bright CDOT yellow whenever staff can slip it in.

Things have been somewhat better since Heather McGregor came on board but she has hardly raised her own singular voice.  So, it is difficult to tell what control she has over output.  Impossible to tell what she will do as managing editor once Weatherred exists.  We hope she chooses to finally move up to her full, obvious potential.

How about you?

Wouldn't you have rather seen a "tiny, low-resolution photo of the bank robbery suspect" instead of chickens on the front page?

Given the overall sense of safety and wellness in the county at this time, 'SandBox Nanny' would have.

Special thank you goes out to Kathryn Trauger, today.  Here on the Glenwood Springs Post Independent.

And a special wish for good luck and best to the PI staff as they hopefully seize the opportunity to make permanent and positive changes.

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "DA's term count is all in the math"

David Mead:
"...Mr. Beeson's first term wasn't by appointment, it was by a recall election. Either way, Mr. Beeson entered into the recall election willingly. He was aware of the reduced term when he entered that election, and served based on the term of that cycle. The world of elections don't adjust, based on ignorance to the law. Beeson won that election, and served his first term accordingly.

The next election cycle had the voters choosing him for election term No. 2. If we add 1 + 1, we get 2. I'm fairly confident the voters, regardless of party affiliation, can add. It's certainly a leap of faith for a seated DA to come forward to defend 1+1+1 equaling 2.

In the bigger picture, Mr. Beeson's DA record isn't much better than his fuzzy math. Based on Beeson's mistrials, and the cost to taxpayers, we can't afford Beeson's fuzzy math, or fuzzy logic interpreting the law.

We have a choice in November. Let's choose competence..."  (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Partial terms couldn't be filled if they count against a term limit"

Robert Jenkins:
John Colson's April 23 article, “Defense attorney questions DA's eligibility for re-election,” questions whether current District Attorney Martin Beeson, who stepped up and filled the remaining partial term of a recalled DA.......

........states that term limits “have no application to partial terms of office, but rather apply only to full terms.”

Salazar's ruling states term limits don't apply to partial terms?............

......Also, how about asking the current attorney general's office for its opinion on Salazar's previous ruling on this matter and reporting that?.......

.........AG Salazar's ruling makes practical sense and is not a partisan issue, as it applies equally to both parties' candidates serving any partial term of any office.........

.......How would we get anyone to fill a partial term vacancy in any office if filling a short-term vacancy for a few months would prevent that same person from legally running for that office for the full term — in this case, four years.

.......The person stepping up to fill the vacancy did not create the vacancy in the first place. We need people to fill partial term vacancies. Partial terms should not count against that person's ability to serve his own full elected terms..." (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Take time to study compressor impacts"

(See related stories and public comments here and here)

If you are not of a certain age and/or never lived rural while growing up, you probably have no idea how a party line telephone system worked.

Or remember Lily Tomlin and her 'one ringie, dingie...two ringie, dingie' schtick.

You may know how to text message however.  May even understand the basis, theory and execution of mass viral marketing.  Or simply know  what you know because you've experienced the fast thumb action of your teens sneaking their phones at the dinner table or been the receiving end of the power of the internet.

The concept of them all is the same.

What happens when you take an aging 'party liner' who literally has an entourage wake tailing her at all times  and put her in the media spotlight?

Why, it's safe to bet that she's going to get on the horn and stay glued to it for as long as anyone can be 'stirred into action'.

The days of party lines and gossip chains of the old school really passed quite some time ago.

Instead, what we have now in this day and age, in a growing portion of the social classes, is something called tolerance and equality.  Good communities just don't suffer covert bullies well anymore.  Not much room at the Inn.

You see, an 'aging party liner' could take a different track and probably find more respect for her position if she did so.  There were so many great suggestions from the general public on the CMC compressor station story when it broke (click links within post) that show the way.

Join our trusted, respected and appreciated CMC Trustees instead of the fauxtrage in the background.  The compressor station must happen.  It is a given and is coming.

Wouldn't it be nice to find a home for it and a way to make it fit in to the Spring Valley community instead of this old, tiresome and blatantly obvious PR push?

just sayin.

David Evans:
"I recently searched Wikipedia for more information about gas compressor stations like the one proposed for the Colorado Mountain College campus. I learned that “Natural gas compressor stations are known to cause many environmental problems, including air pollution, water pollution, soil contamination and noise pollution.” Some sites have emitted extremely high levels of carcinogenic and neurotoxic air pollution.

I watched videos on YouTube that documented extreme noise emissions, explosions and fires at several gas compressor stations. The Hollywood film “Erin Brockovich” documents one community's difficult fight to stop and clean up chromium VI and other toxic chemicals that were released into the soil and aquifer from a gas compressor station.

Any decision to install a gas compressor station on CMC's residential college campus should be made with very careful consideration of the risks involved and the measures the gas company is planning to make sure that the above environmental problems cannot happen in this installation.

The articles in the Post Independent I have read describing this proposed installation have not mentioned any such due diligence on the part of either SourceGas or Colorado Mountain College.

Spring Valley is a very quiet, environmentally clean corner of the Roaring Fork Valley. It's better to take the time and do the work to be sure that this is a good decision."

lol.

One of the most fun things to watch when one is a blogger, are the older generations when they grasp how much power they have in their written words hitting the worldwide web.

Such is the case of Richard Doran this morning, who sent a letter in to the editor of the viral-based Glenwood Springs Post Independent awhile back.   Apparently, he has been waiting for one of his regular opponents in philosophy and politics...to take the baited hook he dangled in that letter.

Tired of waiting, he takes his own bait today.

We couldn't agree with you more, Richard.

Richard Doran:
"....The Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy under the Department of Defense and the Coast Guard under the Department of Homeland Security are to be commended for the outstanding successes that they have recorded throughout the history of our country.

These organizations have protected our freedoms and represented our nation courageously, in spite of the many instances when support by Congress is lacking and leadership by the Commander in Chief is feeble or nonexistent. (For the record, “corps” is pronounced “core,” not “corpse” despite being mispronounced twice by a prominent, yet uniformed, public figure.)........

.....So, I say to all our airmen and airwomen, soldiers, marines, sailors, coast guardsmen and coast guardswomen, thank you for your service to our country...."

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Setting the record straight on Fluke comments"

(Doug Meyers, Glenwood Springs) "Third, in regards to the editor at the Post, I find it very hypocritical of her to make it a point to call and e-mail me whenever I submit a letter that she thinks is not representing the facts of another letter writer or asking for documentation of my claims and then on the other hand she gladly prints letters from Mr. Chisesi that have absolutely no basis and contain false statements."

To paraphrase Andy Stone:  "Forgive the naval gazing, it's time to talk about....the Glenwood Springs Post Independent".  A Stone's Throw column that was written shortly after Bob Ward resigned as editor  of the Aspen Times,  and just a few days before...(eh, well...how do we say it?..what do we call it...really?)...the Times  determined they could handle things without Jenna Weatherred.

The resulting positive changes in the Times were near immediate after Weatherred moved down valley.  A return to the  healthier rivalry between the two Aspen newspapers, and enjoyed when Ward was on deck was back.  The pilfering of content from other Swift publications, just to make a full paper each day, has decreased by about 2/3rds.  The once-in-awhile slip to stalkarazzi style tabloid ink has drifted to roughly once a month or so, and the overall tone is more respectful to the community reporting.  They've even branched out and dipped a toe into the world of realism and have confronted some of their crony accounts, such as the Aspen Skico and a local politician or two.  Overall, the Aspen Times is...the Aspen Times.  They will go on being the genre that they are as long as they are owned by the current owners.  And that's OK with the folks.  It is tolerable and acceptable.  The Times may not give a fig for cleaning up what they helped create in systemic decay within the community, but they have at least stopped adding to the corrosion.  Pretty much.

The trickle down valley phenomena that is day-to-day life as locals know it, saw near immediate changes in the GSPI as Weatherred concentrated on down valley publications.  Given what was going on in region wide tones with major crime that "suddenly crept up and out into the public eye", overturns of longstanding political power in municipal elections, no-ability-to-deny local voices that had been raised for years on a wide range of topics finally getting some ink time (and dare we say a little bit of an  'enlightened mindset'?) after abruptly leaving 'upvalley'; the publisher and editors on the GSPI made dramatic changes in the quality of their output.

And a grateful public sighed relief.

You see, when they are the only game in town, it had grown near intolerable for most folks to even pick up the "daily rag".  We all saw the birth of the "Editorial Board" opinion piece and a few new columnists that enabled the cherished views of the managing staff to remain being published.  In fairness, we also saw a couple of balanced the other direction columnists come into weekly publication.  Overall, things were slightly better for awhile.

What we did not see, was reporting of the news.  All the news.

The folks still needed to turn to the Aspen Daily, Steamboat Today and  the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel to stay informed on the wide range of changes happening in their locale.

Is this a "personal" "attack" on the Post Independent and staff by a 'reputed' "one person with an agenda"?

Not at all.

Here's another 'juicy' little tidbit "about 'SandBox Nanny' " that actors have not given you because they are...well....'actors':

When approached in late April of 2009 with the idea and concept of 'Safe Place to Whistleblow on Non-Profits', one of the first questions 'Nanny' asked was:  "Why hasn't all this been reported over the years in the newspaper?"  It was a legitimate question coming from a fiercely private individual who frankly...really didn't care all that much about the social world of the Valley.  Having gone through one of those divorces that left behind a twisted ex, on an attempted personal redemption mission filled with disinformation, 'SandBox Nanny' pretty much kept to herself and a small group of trusted friends and business acquaintances who truly knew her personally. You know, the kind that take the time to ask and dig all the way to the source of an allegation and grasp hold of the truthful facts before speaking.   Her daily news focus was limited more to politics and trends.

The response she was given to her question was chilling.

The very thought that beautiful towns like Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt and Aspen were filled with what can only be categorized as (quote) "systemic decay and corrosion", through traceable to a handful of source abuses of power and (somewhat soft) corruption, was not only shocking, it was appalling.  The fact that same traceable corrosion had just shattered her own life and the lives of her children without her knowing until it was too late to stop it, was devastating.  To stand and listen to adults she has known for years actually choking up with emotion as they gave details of what some of those power abuses had done to others lives was life-changing.  Finally, she had an answer as to "why" her and her family's lives had been targeted over the previous four months.  The timing of the answer given to her was late April 2009.

Still, she moved heaven and earth to avoid grabbing the Safe Place concept, until finally realizing that no matter what was done to balance, the issue directed toward her was about personal vengeance and had the power of media, politics and money behind it. Coming at her world full steam.  It wouldn't have mattered what was done to balance or enforce the other direction, it was a personal attack.  Safe Place and smalltown7 were given her permission to launch on May 23, 2009.  The rest is somewhat local infamous lore.

How many lives have been literally torn apart by the power abuses that are present in this one town?

Just reaching back in memory over the past three years, while setting aside the major body count from her own life, 'SandBox Nanny' counts up (8) lives that have been hurt. In 81601 alone.  With no real hope to repair, and only ability to rebuild. Damage that the one abuse of power that is the Glenwood Springs Post Independent has greatly contributed to.  As far as the "systemic decay and corrosion" that they contribute to  in literally every publication they pump out that is less than what the standard and ethics of journalistic integrity demand of their position of community trust; the numbers remain continuing to be counted.

Is this a "personal attack" on GSPI and staff?  Absolutely not.  It is one alternative media voice that is simply giving an outlet for long repressed voices to speak up.

An alternative media that is deeply appreciative of the Doug Meyers of the world who see, in similar way to 'SandBox Nanny', that the answer to fixing the problem of the local  media power abuses is to never lose sight of the facts.  Just the facts.

Happy Spring to the publisher, editors and reporters here on the Glenwood Springs Post Independent.

Who knows?  Maybe instead of the slip-sliding back to the past we've been seeing out of you again over the past month or so, you will opt for a full 180 degree turn and remember the higher bar of journalistic integrity.

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Cheney heart cartoon despicable"

Do you ever wonder if Swift Communications, who owns the GSPI, really knows the type of 'news' they engage in on most days?

The display allowed by Twitter last Saturday was unconscionable.  Troubling to think we have similar right here at home.  Thank you to Sharon Brenner for speaking up.

Sharon Brenner:
"The cartoon the Post Independent printed on March 29 regarding former Vice President Cheney's heart transplant is absolutely despicable, and the paper owes its readers a front page apology. This comes from the same side of the political spectrum that called for more civil discourse after the shooting of Rep. Giffords in Arizona. This is also from the same political orientation that discussed the shooting of Trayvon Williams, but has remained silent about the public issuance of a bounty, without a trial, by the New Black Panthers.

It's the typical liberal double standard: Do as I say or we will get you, and we welcome diversity as long as it is saying the same thing I believe...."  (Read original letter? Click title)

Stan Rachesky:
"...The federal government has become the nation's largest creditor, debtor, lender, employer, consumer, contractor, property owner, insurer, health care provider, pension guarantor and who knows what else. We are slowly surrendering our liberty for false promises.

People are being duped with financial burdens in the form of entitlements, high government salaries, health care and educational benefits. People, through their own ignorance, take to the streets in the Occupy Movement, protest against their own self determination and vote to enchain everybody, including themselves. They will eventually become ruled by despots, such as our self-anointed president who thinks he is wiser and more learned and way beyond the capabilities of the citizens he supposedly rules.

People who are hungry and on food stamps, out of a job and collecting unemployment checks, or who just lost their home are the stuff of which despots are made.

It's easier to accept what we are told than to read and think for ourselves.

Readers are leaders. The rest are lemmings. It's their choice, but their attitude will affect their kids' and grandkids' lives.

America has become a society where people are supposedly wise enough to select their leaders but too stupid to choose the right light bulb.

The greatest obstacle to Obama's master plan is individualism. Be ready. Be educated. Be an individual...."

John Korrie, Glenwood Springs:
"I cannot believe that our city council has agreed with RFTA to condemn Wayne Rudd's building on South Glen Avenue if a sale agreement does not work out.

Condemnation is nothing shy of communism just like when the Re-1 school district took the True Value building.

It is wrong on every level of democracy. It is no different than if someone knocked on your door and said, “I want to buy your house,” and you say, “It is not for sale,” and they say, “OK, then we will just condemn it and take it away from you.”

In that sense, I bet everyone out there feels that is stealing, and totally wrong.

But as soon as it is a public agency or government agency doing it, it's OK. Hogwash, it is still wrong. Are there no other options for a bus station elsewhere?..."  (Read more?  Click title)

Kateri Hall:
"A March 1 Post Independent headline couldn't escape my eyes: “Oak Meadows residents alarmed about gas drilling.” And on Feb. 28, I read where the proposed asphalt plant owners were not going to be permitted to use their property to operate their plant beside the organic farm.

First, I submit I haven't been here long enough to know details on either topic. I don't know which side I would support on either topic. I do know that I would entertain both ideas with a business-friendly approach.

That's what I'm pushing. Entertain the ideas. Spend some of that “no” energy on a solution on how and where to make business happen.

I look around the Western Slope and I see a gorgeous part of the Rockies. I also see the economy has hit hard times here. In an area where jobs are scarce, I'm struck how many people's first reaction is to say “no.”

How hungry does someone have to be before they are open to discussion? I dare answer my own question and say maybe they're not hungry at all. Maybe the food stamps are flowing just fine in America.

The consensus always seems to be “Yeah, bring American jobs back to America.” Yet when someone ventures out, the same consensus is too eager to flood them with bureaucracy.

What's left for America? Our nation won't flourish where the only incomes allowed are consulting and welfare.

How many items did you purchase last week that were not made in America? How much did that tank of gas cost? If the consumer says “ouch,” they're not receptive to logic...." (Read more?  Click title)

"On my way to Glenwood Springs High School, I pass two dispensaries. I see two ads for medical cannabis while reading the local paper in the morning. I pass one dispensary before I cross the Grand Avenue bridge, and another just down the road.

In the paper I can always count on finding an article or an ad about medical marijuana. “Valley teen: Marijuana is ‘widely available.'” That article sure grabbed my attention. The article talked about a student in Carbondale and his dance with the medical marijuana epidemic. When asked where he would get his supply, he stated, “[My provider] would go down to the dispensary once or twice a week and get his marijuana, then he'd give it to me.”

In the local news briefs on March 8, another headline nabbed my attention: “Teen arrested for Carbondale dispensary break-in.” If you ask me, these dispensaries are nothing but trouble.

A group of us students at GSHS have been studying public policy. We are not out to say that marijuana should be legal or illegal. That's a lost argument.

We are looking into ways that medical marijuana could be better distributed. The main thing we have found when we asked our peers, “Do you think, upon seeing medical marijuana dispensaries, that marijuana is becoming socially acceptable?” is that 80 percent of the time, the answer was yes.

We have come up with a policy idea in which medical marijuana would be distributed through a pharmacy, like every other prescription medication. It would be given in a regulated dose with the information on usage as well as the patient's name on the prescription bottle. It would be handled by licensed pharmacists, and could only be obtained by prescription from a licensed doctor local to the patient's area of residence.

There would be less chance of abuse going unnoticed, it would follow the same guidelines as any other prescription drug, and be viewed, as it should be, strictly as a prescription drug...."

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Rehab was hard, but it worked"

You know who else rocks?

Our drug courts.  And Jared Hogue.  We're pretty sure the PI won't mind us taking the snip of this in it's entirety.

A special thank you goes to all of our first responders, our local, regional and federal  law enforcement, our 'dime-dropping' anonymous tipsters, our lawyers on both sides of drug issues and especially to our Judges who preside over drug court.  You are appreciated.

Jared Hogue:
"My name is Jared Hogue, the same name that appeared in the paper many times for meth arrests to high speed chases. I just wanted to say thank you to Judge Daniel Petre for allowing me the treatment that I needed to turn my life around.

This is the reason I'm writing this letter. People believe that if a person is addicted to drugs, we should lock them up and throw away the key. I don't believe in this.

I was in prison twice before in my life for things I had done while under the influence of meth. The only thing it did for me was teach me how to be a criminal.

Then in 2006, after a slew of felony charges, I was given the chance to go to a serious rehabilitation program. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life. I planted my feet and said, “I can beat this disease.”

Now, almost seven years later, I'm still drug free. This program gave me the opportunity to build a life for myself after the wreckage I had created.

I now have a good career doing something I love. I won custody of my daughter after a year-long process through the courts. I have a wonderful woman in my life now. I love life.

Addiction is a disease, and it's treatable. Addicts do things they would never do sober when they are under the influence of drugs. But rehab doesn't come easily. It's a hard, long process, and the addict has to be willing to make a change.

Thanks to an awesome attorney and Judge Petre, and even the district attorney, I was given an opportunity that changed my life forever. Change is possible with the right intervention.

So as I sit here after a night shift at work, thanking God for the life I am able to live, I was reflecting on addicts and treatment. We need more long-term treatment for addicts.

Thank you, Judge Petre, I am forever indebted to you for your wisdom...."

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Criticism of Silt economic development is divisive"

He sure has smoothed out the rough edges, hasn't he?

Now an icon to the common man, Silt Mayor Dave Moore once again delivers a stunningly succinct analogy of recent criticism from the extreme political factions of Garfield County, Colorado.

Hip, hip Hooray for Dave!!!  (cue sound of cheering crowds, marching bands and general chaos and mayhem)

Town of Silt Mayor, Dave Moore:
"...I am very impressed with the overwhelming interest outsiders have given to the revitalization of Silt. Most have been very positive. However there are a few who are not.

The urban renewal authority meeting proved to be very encouraging. Approximately 80 people attended seeking satisfaction from unfounded rumors relative to blight and eminent domain. After two hours of discussion and explanation, they left very content with a greater understanding about the issues.

Many thanked us for the explanations and expressed their support.

However there are those who are uninformed and did not take the time to research the truth. They openly blast the efforts of Silt to get a grocery store, bank and pharmacy, as many have read in the Post Independent the last two weeks.

Neither did they visit with us, research or come to the meetings. Their comments are divisive, and baseless.

Example: Karen Foster wrote in her Feb. 6 letter, “a nifty takeover of property taxes through a sleight (trickery) of hand machination (plot) that uses ‘blight' to downgrade property.” She then accuses Silt of “… insidious undertow of devastation to the communities it purports to be helping is nothing short of a crafty (devious) ruse (scam).”

It sort of makes us look like we are the disciples of Al Capone....."  (Read the rest?  It's brilliant! Click title)

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Clarifying county's $1M for Silt infrastructure"

All it would take to permanently stop the tabloid journalism at the Glenwood Springs Post Independent is for every leader we have to do what Garfield County Commissioner John Martin does in this letter to the editor (and) what our local police chiefs did over CIRC's assault on our SRO officers.

Just stand up.  One of the reasons our authorities have so many folks living in the shadows throughout the area is because certain media has become emboldened to the point that causing harm to individuals and the image of our communities is now common place and seen as an entitlement of sorts.

Sooner or later, the word will continue to get back to the PI staff's employer, Swift Communications, and we'll have a full-time respectable local newspaper once again.

A thank you goes out to Garfield County Commissioner John Martin this morning for standing up and calling a spade a spade.

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Why is Silt's URA so appalling to BOCC?"

Posting up a letter to the editor by Carl McWilliams of Silt is like walking through a minefield for 'SandBox Nanny'.

She and a very large majority of the local population disagree with many of McWilliams views and how he goes about his anti-gas industry activism.

But today, McWilliams is dead on with his critcism of 'how' Garfield BOCC put Silt through its paces over their Urban Renewal request.

SandBox doesn't think there's some 'grand conspiracy' such as McWilliams insinuates in this letter.

We do think there is a glimpse into a growing sense of empowerment that does make one feel a little uneasy.  With that said, we do not believe the friction is because we have an all Republican board of commissioners.

Our impression here on SandBoxBlogs is that the newly elected Jankovsky needs some balancing out and the way to do that is to change our county charter and laws to increase the board size from (3) commissioners to at least (6).

For a county the size of Garfield it is necessary.

As far as Silt and their assistance from GarCo, we know they will spend the money very wisely and the benefits from that renewal will be seen far and wide as a very, very good move on GarCo's part.

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "A free America can resist tyranny"

Local resident Betty Scranton is one of those that is known as a beautiful conservative woman.

It's a widely known fact that conservatives have exceptional ladies in their midst.

Betty's blessed with something else conservative gals are widely known for.  Courage.  She bravely tackles the hard-leaning left  that usually dominate the Post Independent and does so nearly every week.

We're glad you're 'bouyed by Melanie Sturm' this week, Betty.  Keep up the good work.

"Buoyed by Melanie Sturm's Jan. 19 column in The Aspen Times, “Free-enterprise critics are intellectually challenged,” this local tea party organizer decided to join in her courageous charge by challenging the left's frenzied, irrational focus on the ills of America's free market system...."
