"Voters in the Rifle Fire Protection District can cast ballots on Tuesday, May 8 and will choose between three incumbents and a former director to fill three seats on the district board of directors.
They include incumbents Yvonne Long, Rex Rhule and John Sandquist. Former director Lee Martens is seeking to return to the board. He served for four years, before he lost his seat in the 2010 election. Long and Sandquist are each seeking a second, four-year term, while Rhule is running for a third term.
The Rifle district serves some 24,000 people spread out over 411 square miles, including the Rifle city limits. Voters can cast ballots on May 8 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the district office, 1850 Railroad Ave.
The Citizen Telegram asked each candidate to provide their background and experience and to identify the top issues facing the district. Each provided e-mail answers, which were only edited for clarity, spelling and style....." (Read more? Click title)

SandBoxBlogs: Aspen Times "Back to my roots, to the place where I learned the most"
I wonder, in listening to John Colson reminisce with such heartfelt emotion, where it is that he lost his way?
Very little, to nothing as some would say, of the traits he instilled in himself back in the Cardinal days show up anywhere in his output while working for Swift Communications. Worse, his lack of journalistic integrity that fails so abysmally pulling in fact from fiction and both sides to all stories for the PI and the Times has harmed far more lives, businesses, law enforcement activity and case trials than he has helped.
With such a resume as claimed in his column this week, one can only wonder what happened to John Colson along the way that changed him from what he 'used to be'?
Is that hole in the bucket widening for John?
It appears so.

"I went home last weekend to revel in an atmosphere that was part past, part present and entirely aimed at the future of journalism in our benighted nation.
Which is to say I went back to Madison, Wis., the town where I grew up, for the 120th birthday party of The Daily Cardinal, the student newspaper where I learned for certain and forever that being a reporter was to be my life.
The Cardinal, with the bird itself as its emblem, was and is a unique institution, the sixth-oldest campus paper in the nation.....
.....I learned, at the Cardinal, about everything from the democratic ideals that kept the Cardinal going to deeply held certitudes about the role of journalists in this madcap world.
I learned about the technical aspects of the journalistic business and about how my words went from my brain to my fingers on the keyboard to the typesetting department and the press.
I learned about the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and how it is used and abused every day.
I learned about the perfidy of large corporations, which even then were beginning to buy up small newspapers in a spreading contagion of monopoly newsmongering that continues to this day.
I learned how to ask questions that interviewees really did not want to answer and how to dig into public records to ferret out the secrets that these interviewees tried to hide.
I learned that the hardships endured by people often told a more complete story than the press releases and carefully choreographed half-truths of the official government and corporate worlds.

What is 'SandBox Nanny's' personal opinion of John Colson?
Let's lay to rest for all time, in the first time (ever) that her very own personal view has ever been expressed without the 'cover' of "shock-jock style" commentating, what she really thinks of John Colson and his chosen line of work.
She could care less what John Colson chooses to do with his time or his career. Has no personal view one way or the other on any of it. The guy has never bothered to introduce himself, ask for an interview, or for that matter...ask one question or investigate the 'other side of the story' of 'SandBox Nanny'. Even with that dismal track record revealing his diligence and competency in his chosen field; she really (sincerely) doesn't care anything at all about John Colson's personal choices in his career. Isn't it amazing what factual truths one can learn about big stories when the simplicity of basic facts come out into the light of day?
'SandBox Nanny' does have, in her actor's role as 'SandBox Nanny', one problem with John Colson. Read up on her natural quirk tendency here.
John Colson is not just an everyday bully that can be dealt with through social darwinism.
John Colson is a bully who places himself in a position of public trust, that just so happens to be a position that wields a tremendous amount of power to harm and alter the courses of lives.
In her personal view, John Colson should either stop his behaviors or look for another line of work. Be an op-ed columnist. Or be a reporter that adheres to the standards and ethics of journalistic integrity. It is impossible to be both. As far as the bully tendencies, those are personal traits that shouldn't be in either the 'columnist' or the 'reporter' portfolio. Unless, of course, you wish to tackle major social issues through the use of a pseudonym that is strong enough to break through very thick stone walls. Now...that last one is an idea, isn't it? Some cases might even find that kind of style to be leadership in nature. Just think, you could be one of those that wants to be in that role should you alter your course and redirect your energies.
With the above said, let's move on with today's 'SandBox Nanny' post on this latest column by John Colson. Up on the Aspen Times.

SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Setting the record straight on Fluke comments"
(Doug Meyers, Glenwood Springs) "Third, in regards to the editor at the Post, I find it very hypocritical of her to make it a point to call and e-mail me whenever I submit a letter that she thinks is not representing the facts of another letter writer or asking for documentation of my claims and then on the other hand she gladly prints letters from Mr. Chisesi that have absolutely no basis and contain false statements."
To paraphrase Andy Stone: "Forgive the naval gazing, it's time to talk about....the Glenwood Springs Post Independent". A Stone's Throw column that was written shortly after Bob Ward resigned as editor of the Aspen Times, and just a few days before...(eh, well...how do we say it?..what do we call it...really?)...the Times determined they could handle things without Jenna Weatherred.
The resulting positive changes in the Times were near immediate after Weatherred moved down valley. A return to the healthier rivalry between the two Aspen newspapers, and enjoyed when Ward was on deck was back. The pilfering of content from other Swift publications, just to make a full paper each day, has decreased by about 2/3rds. The once-in-awhile slip to stalkarazzi style tabloid ink has drifted to roughly once a month or so, and the overall tone is more respectful to the community reporting. They've even branched out and dipped a toe into the world of realism and have confronted some of their crony accounts, such as the Aspen Skico and a local politician or two. Overall, the Aspen Times is...the Aspen Times. They will go on being the genre that they are as long as they are owned by the current owners. And that's OK with the folks. It is tolerable and acceptable. The Times may not give a fig for cleaning up what they helped create in systemic decay within the community, but they have at least stopped adding to the corrosion. Pretty much.
The trickle down valley phenomena that is day-to-day life as locals know it, saw near immediate changes in the GSPI as Weatherred concentrated on down valley publications. Given what was going on in region wide tones with major crime that "suddenly crept up and out into the public eye", overturns of longstanding political power in municipal elections, no-ability-to-deny local voices that had been raised for years on a wide range of topics finally getting some ink time (and dare we say a little bit of an 'enlightened mindset'?) after abruptly leaving 'upvalley'; the publisher and editors on the GSPI made dramatic changes in the quality of their output.
And a grateful public sighed relief.
You see, when they are the only game in town, it had grown near intolerable for most folks to even pick up the "daily rag". We all saw the birth of the "Editorial Board" opinion piece and a few new columnists that enabled the cherished views of the managing staff to remain being published. In fairness, we also saw a couple of balanced the other direction columnists come into weekly publication. Overall, things were slightly better for awhile.
What we did not see, was reporting of the news. All the news.
The folks still needed to turn to the Aspen Daily, Steamboat Today and the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel to stay informed on the wide range of changes happening in their locale.
Is this a "personal" "attack" on the Post Independent and staff by a 'reputed' "one person with an agenda"?
Not at all.
Here's another 'juicy' little tidbit "about 'SandBox Nanny' " that actors have not given you because they are...well....'actors':
When approached in late April of 2009 with the idea and concept of 'Safe Place to Whistleblow on Non-Profits', one of the first questions 'Nanny' asked was: "Why hasn't all this been reported over the years in the newspaper?" It was a legitimate question coming from a fiercely private individual who frankly...really didn't care all that much about the social world of the Valley. Having gone through one of those divorces that left behind a twisted ex, on an attempted personal redemption mission filled with disinformation, 'SandBox Nanny' pretty much kept to herself and a small group of trusted friends and business acquaintances who truly knew her personally. You know, the kind that take the time to ask and dig all the way to the source of an allegation and grasp hold of the truthful facts before speaking. Her daily news focus was limited more to politics and trends.
The response she was given to her question was chilling.
The very thought that beautiful towns like Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt and Aspen were filled with what can only be categorized as (quote) "systemic decay and corrosion", through traceable to a handful of source abuses of power and (somewhat soft) corruption, was not only shocking, it was appalling. The fact that same traceable corrosion had just shattered her own life and the lives of her children without her knowing until it was too late to stop it, was devastating. To stand and listen to adults she has known for years actually choking up with emotion as they gave details of what some of those power abuses had done to others lives was life-changing. Finally, she had an answer as to "why" her and her family's lives had been targeted over the previous four months. The timing of the answer given to her was late April 2009.
Still, she moved heaven and earth to avoid grabbing the Safe Place concept, until finally realizing that no matter what was done to balance, the issue directed toward her was about personal vengeance and had the power of media, politics and money behind it. Coming at her world full steam. It wouldn't have mattered what was done to balance or enforce the other direction, it was a personal attack. Safe Place and smalltown7 were given her permission to launch on May 23, 2009. The rest is somewhat local infamous lore.
How many lives have been literally torn apart by the power abuses that are present in this one town?
Just reaching back in memory over the past three years, while setting aside the major body count from her own life, 'SandBox Nanny' counts up (8) lives that have been hurt. In 81601 alone. With no real hope to repair, and only ability to rebuild. Damage that the one abuse of power that is the Glenwood Springs Post Independent has greatly contributed to. As far as the "systemic decay and corrosion" that they contribute to in literally every publication they pump out that is less than what the standard and ethics of journalistic integrity demand of their position of community trust; the numbers remain continuing to be counted.
Is this a "personal attack" on GSPI and staff? Absolutely not. It is one alternative media voice that is simply giving an outlet for long repressed voices to speak up.
An alternative media that is deeply appreciative of the Doug Meyers of the world who see, in similar way to 'SandBox Nanny', that the answer to fixing the problem of the local media power abuses is to never lose sight of the facts. Just the facts.
Happy Spring to the publisher, editors and reporters here on the Glenwood Springs Post Independent.
Who knows? Maybe instead of the slip-sliding back to the past we've been seeing out of you again over the past month or so, you will opt for a full 180 degree turn and remember the higher bar of journalistic integrity.

An excellent letter from Glenn Rappaport who is a Basalt Town Councilman and mayoral candidate. Again, up on the Aspen Daily News.
Goodness, local political races are sure heating up early, aren't they?
"There is ample good sense contained in the first rule of public office: “Don’t respond to people who buy ink by the gallon.” And yet Scott Condon, a prominent Aspen Times journalist, has for years deployed his ink to question my integrity and undermine my moral fiber. His latest dispatch, published last Friday, Feb. 24, does the same. I write to set the record straight.
Most of us in and around the Basalt Town Hall are well aware that Mr. Condon, the only valley writer who regularly covers Basalt politics, has had a long and close friendship with Jacque Whitsitt, my opponent in the upcoming Basalt mayoral race.
Over the decades it’s been frustrating — and rather frightening — to watch Mr. Condon cast me as the protagonist in a string of fictional scandals, then resurrect those fake scandals as official history in his ongoing coverage of Basalt politics. His latest version of this trick, published last week, revolves around my work as a consultant for the proposed Pan and Fork redevelopment project, a revitalization effort for downtown Basalt. Because of my involvement, I have recused myself from voting on the project as a member of the Basalt Town Council; this is standard procedure for public servants whose private sector work comes up for review. Yet Condon raises doubts about my potential effectiveness as mayor, and even lightly suggests I could be breaking the law.
Ultimately he comes up short, leaving observers of Basalt politics to wonder at his timing. Even if there were a scandal afoot, why didn’t he write about it four months ago, when Harry Teague and I first signed on to consult on the Pan and Fork project? SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Correction: Antero drilling on Silt Mesa"
Let's see if we can bring this very significant "error" in reporting by John Colson against Antero Resources, off the 'buried in the cellar' pages of the Glenwood Springs Post Independent and out into the bright sunshine and light of day:

It really isn't "incredibly intense scrutiny", Rick.
It's a systemic problem of a style of yellow journalism that the PI creates, perpetuates and enhances at every opportunity. Accomplishing nothing but harm to area residents and communities.
SandBox doesn't support Silt's URA at state and federal levels. But, we do support Silt developing a working relationship with GarCo. We should be keeping all of the money, including the seed and capital funds, right here at home.

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/John Colson "Company criticized for waiting to inform Silt Mesa residents"
Here they are again. The group known as "Some Silt Mesa residents".
What's the whine about this time?
That they still don't have a hand-holding babysitter to personally inform them when public meetings are held on issues of interest to them.
It's either the fault of the GarCo BOCC, the oil and gas companies or the dereliction of duty by Silt Mayor Dave Moore. Always the same old whine that someone else should be responsible for coordinating their activism schedules.
Here's a bold, cutting edge concept!! Give it some thought!
Ask your local newspaper and investigative reporter John Colson to start covering all the news and then print details of schedules and meetings in the local newspaper.
(whisper...whisper...did he even try to think before he wrote a title like that one??...isn't that what the press does is inform??....whisper...whisper...)

"WASHINGTON — A Friday New York Times story that essentially indicted and convicted a 22-year-old star football player on an alleged sexual assault charge by an anonymous accuser should have begun as follows:
“We know absolutely nothing about this rumor except what six people told us anonymously about this guy who they say sexually assaulted this girl. We don't know who she is or what she said, or really anything, but here's HIS name and what ‘they' say about him.”
Instead, with throat-clearing authority, the story begins with the young man's name — Patrick J. Witt, Yale University's former quarterback — and his announcement last fall that he was withdrawing his Rhodes scholarship application so that he could play against Harvard. The game was scheduled the same day as the scholarship interview.
Next we are told that he actually had withdrawn his application for the scholarship after the Rhodes Trust had learned “through unofficial channels that a fellow student had accused Witt of sexual assault.” And there goes the gavel. Case closed.
But in fact, no one seems to know much of anything, and no one in an official capacity is talking. The only people advancing this devastating and sordid tale are “a half-dozen [anonymous] people with knowledge of all or part of the story.” All or part? Which part? At least there is the word "restates" in the header.
The recent giant expose' of the GarCo BOCC by local media seems to now be complete.

In addition to repeating, for the sake of front page and viral link bait marketing of their output by Swift Communications and their GSPI, what our BOCC had already publicly stated in casual output regarding their county manager requirements; stealth reporters with unlimited ink supplies have also milked a second viral ready article from Mr. Stroud today on the 'subterfuge' of our BOCC:
"Garfield commissioners commit to more openness in county government"
There is one bit of true news in all this.
After literally years now of complaints, the county is finally updating the audio recording equipment that records all of their meetings for public access.

Pity poor Bill Koch.
In our lifetime, will we ever see a headline on any of the Koch Brothers that's fair? Balanced? How about true?
Ya know, Ms. Urquhart. If you're going to force the guy, again, into the local headlines which will then be viral link baited around the globe within an hour or less of publication; at least get it right.
"MULTI-billionaire leads push for Castle Creek guardrail".
Tonight, 'SandBox Nanny' sends out a thank you to all the Koch brothers, whether they are at peace with each other or not.
You are appreciated for all you do with your enterprises that bring so many jobs to Americans.
You are also appreciated for the random acts of philanthropy and generosity that you do for so many and also for the major good works you do that are never in the forefront.

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent "Locals dish on their perfect winter day"
How nice it has been over the past four to five months of picking up the PI each day and seeing a community newspaper again.
For the past few years, dominance by only a select focus of reporting and community members really took its toll on how the folks have felt about their local print news.
Yes, there are still way too many grievances and from what we see, most of them are warranted.
But as the year 2011 winds down there is no doubt that things are much, much better than they were.

SandBox Comments: Aspen Times/Letter to the Editor "Voters like Su Lum are the problem"

After reading Su Lum's column in Wednesday's paper, I have to wonder why she is given space in your newspaper (“There's an election in progress, sort of,” Oct. 12, 2011, The Aspen Times.)..."

Another 'well spotted' letter from a local. This one up on The Aspen Times.
There are positive signs that Swift Communications is trying and in many areas succeeding, to clean up their publication and turn both The AspenTimes and Glenwood Springs Post Independent into publications we may someday be proud of again. Especially The Times. Who we must add, is almost there.
Better yet, the most positive change is out here in readers of these publications. Have you noticed the major shift in power?
Folks pushed back the bully(s) and are now seeming to want the cleaner house to stay that way.
Where do readers go when the problem isn't bias, censorship, gonzo journalism, yellow ink and the love of just simply writing deceptive flamers? Where do they go when the problem is the quality of the content?
Such as the opinion column of Su Lum.
Maybe they speak up. If they care about the publication's business success.
If they don't care, they simply do their subscribing with The Aspen Daily and take advantage of the free copy of The Times and PI. Figuring that sooner or later, the problem will resolve itself through the course of a natural business death.
