SandBoxBlogs: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Your Letters "Sister worried about gang colors at Strawberry Days"

Comment ability on this post is wide open.

Debbie Centeno:
"With Strawberry Days upon us next month, I'm wondering what would be deemed appropriate attire by government officials for such an event.....

....So what would be the best way to show that you are just a normal person, at a normal carnival, just having a fun time with your kids?.........

.......Another reason why I would want to wear the most neutral “non-gang” colors is in case I see my nephews — the same nephews that saw their father arrested and loaded up on an immigration bus. I wouldn't want them to get more traumatized with also seeing their aunt get questioned or probably arrested because she wore a color that, in some big city, actual gang members wear.

How about for training purposes the sheriff's office spends my tax dollars going to, say, Denver or Los Angeles to see what an actual gang member dresses like and how he or she behaves? I would most certainly feel much safer when the sheriff's office has had actual experience with a real gang member, and thereby can distinguish the difference between a true criminal and a sports fan. It seems like not a hard thing to do. But unfortunately our sheriff's office has had no real experience with this issue, so we can't expect them to know how to act in such a case...."

SandBoxBlogs: Denver Post "Colorado lawmaker soon will air issue of school resource officers doubling as immigration police"

State Rep. Roger Wilson  (D-Glenwood Springs) has not accomplished a single thing while in office.

Elected at mid-terms by a very small margin, he was the hope of liberals in the Glenwood Springs area who had just lost Tresi Houpt and Tom Dalessandri at mid-terms 2010.

The sudden interest from Rep. Wilson in the 'Strawberry Days Massacre' story, that led to the war being waged by CIRC and AYUA against regional law enforcement, is transparent at best.

Here's a news flash to Rep. Wilson:

Our SRO's are trusted by the majority of  the latino population of the RE1 School District.  Interestingly enough,  they are mostly all legal immigrants.

Nancy Lofholm:"ICE spokesman Carl Rusnok said he views the issue as more of a local one that doesn't involve his agency.

"This issue exclusively belongs to individual school districts," Rusnok said. "These (school resource officers) are not ICE employees."

"Wilson said he views the underlying issue as one of trust and he thinks there needs to be "a firewall" between immigration enforcement and school resource officers.

"There is a general principle here and it has to do with the trust of school resource officers...They need to be trusted," Wilson said.

Wilson said the earliest he might propose any legislation would be next year. He has not yet set a date for Roaring Fork representatives to come to Denver to lay out their problems before legislators...."

SandBox Comments: Glenwood Springs Post Independent/Community Briefs "Food vendor and exhibitor applications available for 115th annual Strawberry Days "

Unfortunately, not a thing has been done about Strawberry Days issues by our city administration or city council.

Given this week's climate in our forum of open commentary; 'SandBox Nanny' opts for simply tossing up the PI's reporting of some details for the 115th  Strawberry Days celebration and reminding the 'kids' they are moderated:

via Glenwood Springs Post Independent:
"The Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association invites interested food vendors and exhibitors to apply for the 115th annual Strawberry Days to be held June 15, 16 and 17. Applications are available at strawberrydaysfestival.com or by calling the chamber at (970) 945-6589. The deadline to apply is April 15.

The theme for the 2012 event is Glenwood Springs — “America's Most Fun Town.” This year's festival features a FamilyFest area with interactive, entertaining and creative experiences for the kids; an arts and crafts fair and food court, an old-fashioned carnival; a parade down Grand Avenue and a full entertainment lineup.

For more information, call the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association at (970) 945-6589 or visit strawberrydaysfestival.com...." (Read original announcement? Click title)
