What she will do for Mr. Stroud, on this article, is use the tool of an unlikely sage:
"What I hear you saying, is that it is way too difficult to simply grab the statistical data that breaks down both the city sales tax numbers (and) the lodging/accommodations tax numbers; and post them up in the only daily newspaper 81601 has. Because it is way too difficult to do that, you believe it best to continue to antagonize the folks who want to get down to the facts instead of the 'gild on the lily' as they are so fond of saying."
SandBox Nanny will add that she is very pleased to see the change in reporting that Mr. Stroud has made. More and more we see just the facts and that is sincerely appreciated.

This is the most amazing expose' on medical marijuana centers.
Why hasn't the fact that they are not even legal here in Colorado if you interpret the technical and exact wording of the statute; been exposed until now?
"Marijuana centers were born out of Amendment 20, the language of which reads: “An Amendment to the Colorado Constitution authorizing the medical use of marijuana for persons suffering from debilitating medical conditions, and, in connection therewith, establishing an affirmative defense to Colorado criminal laws for patients and their primary caregivers relating to the medical use of marijuana.”
The amendment allows registered patients or their designated caregivers to cultivate and possess marijuana in small amounts to meet the patients’ needs. Referendums 1A, 2A, 2C and 2E would not change that — patients who truly need pot still would have access to it. Instead, the referendums would, effective Jan. 1, shut down the five marijuana centers operating in Routt County — three in Steamboat, one in Oak Creek and one in Milner.
Nothing in Amendment 20 provides for medical marijuana centers. Such centers began cropping up along the Front Range in 2008 as some interpreted the caregiver provision of the law to allow commercial operations to grow and sell significant amounts of marijuana on behalf of registered cardholders. Imagine the smaller resorts such as Sunlight and Powderhorn joining resources with a combined pass.
Now imagine the big boys like Vail, Aspen and Telluride throwing in some killer deals for their slower times.
Combined ski passes.
Heckuva idea. So glad the 'kids' thought of it years ago and have pushed it ever since. Primarily because it's a great way for families to be able to take mini-vacations in the area.

Wouldn't it be nice for our city coffers to have tourism based representation not repeatedly show our community in the same light as those within our tourism industry that are divisive, elitist, intolerant and just plain old 'subtle' and arrogant 'bullies'?
What we hear Jolene actually saying, that is now taken out of context by Katie Turner and turned into a personal attack on Jolene; is that we cannot afford, at this time, what we are spending on public art and the maintenance of.
Jolene 'attacks', in her letter to the editor linked above, the elected officials, the known suppliers and vendors that perpetuate what she considers waste spending. As a taxpayer that has no choice but to assist putting heads in beds for her community to survive, technically somebody like Katie Turner, in the "hospitality" industry...works for Jolene Varley.
What Jolene is implying is a bit like the 'birthday cake gimmick' and $600 dollars per minute ($300 of that covered by another bailout to tourism marketing by the folks) for the fireworks this year; both of which are just a small portion of the reason we are so buried in the hole with our tourism dollars here in Glenwood Springs.
How 'sad' it is that no matter how much deeper we sink into the quagmire, our hospitality and tourism representation still resorts to attacks on the general population.
Weighing the two letters against each other, Jolene Varley most certainly comes out on top as the class act.

The word “bully,” originally meaning “sweetheart” in the 1500s, evolved by the 1680s to its current meaning, “harasser of the weak.” Mr. Doug Allen, writing in last Friday’s Aspen Daily News, labels Ms. Marilyn Marks as a “bully.” He characterizes her supporters as a “small handful” and ascribes their collective attitude as “turned on by her constant anti-everything antics.” Mr. Allen goes on to insinuate that Ms. Marks is a jerk, disparages her business success as a CEO, defines her stature as a “divisive political figure,” and her influence on the city’s election commission as “improper.” He concludes by summarizing her political views as nothing more than the rants of a “political malcontent” and presumes to speak for us all by stating that “we don’t want you involved in our city government.”
I would first like to comment on Mr. Allen’s use of the term “bully.” By definition, a bully must occupy a position of power over the bullied. Mr. Allen never states exactly who has been bullied by Ms. Marks. For Mr. Allen to be judged accurate in the use of this term, one would have to conclude that, in the power relationship between Ms. Marks and the unmentioned victims, presumably Aspen’s politicians or administrators, she held the power position and they were the powerless, she the harasser and they the weak. Is this the power dynamic when a lone citizen challenges a government body? At best, ascribing the term “bully” to Ms. Marks is inaccurate.
The accuracy of Mr. Allen’s comment, “small handful of supporters,” cannot easily be verified as he offers no information in support of this description. One could use Ms. Mark’s vote tally when she ran for council. Ms. Marks received 34 percent, or 877 votes compared to 43 percent or 1,090 votes for Mr. Ireland. Ms. Marks’ supporters could accurately be described as a minority of Aspen voters. They might also be described as a significant minority since the next highest vote tally was 17 percent or 421 votes. Ms. Marks’ supporters could reasonably take exception to being classified as a “small handful.” They might also take exception to being characterized as “turned on by her constant anti-everything antics.” I took the liberty of calling a few people who I know support and voted for Ms. Marks. They unanimously denied supporting Ms. Marks for the reason Mr. Allen stated. I could hardly refer to this small sample size as scientific, being that it was such a “small handful.”
The bully analogy continues and morphs into “jerk.” The exact meaning of the word “jerk” is difficult to determine. It is certainly pejorative, a word intended to disparage or belittle, I might suggest, a word intended to bully. Mr. Allen continues to slight Ms. Marks by casually disparaging her business success as a CEO of a large corporation by referring to it as “unclear.” It isn’t enough that a woman rises to the top of a traditionally male business; Mr. Allen finds it necessary to demean that success by suggesting it may have been less than we might imagine. No facts, just a not-so subtle insult.
Mr. Allen goes on to describe Ms. Marks as a “divisive political figure.” I Googled the term “divisive political figure” and found names as diverse as Al Gore, Dick Cheney, Sarah Palin and Nelson Mandella. It seems the term can be used to make any point one wishes. The choice of such a term appears to say more about its user than its target.
Mr. Allen refers to Ms. Marks’ “improper influence over the city’s election commission” as “well documented accusations,” as if the fact that any accusation that is well documented is true. Can any reader of this commentary think of a well-documented accusation that has later proven false?
I suggest, based on Ms. Marks’ behavior as it relates to her political activities, stated positions, court challenges or verbal exchanges, that she is more aptly described as a political activist, a person who is a vigorous advocate for a cause. Most Americans cherish the right of free speech and understand the responsibility that the majority has to protect and defend that right. I suggest that anyone who seeks to diminish that right, to intimidate others into silence or submission, need only look in the mirror to know what a bully looks like..."

It seems the term can be used to make any point one wishes. The choice of such a term appears to say more about its user than its target.
Mr. Allen refers to Ms. Marks’ “improper influence over the city’s election commission” as “well documented accusations,” as if the fact that any accusation that is well documented is true. Can any reader of this commentary think of a well-documented accusation that has later proven false?
I suggest, based on Ms. Marks’ behavior as it relates to her political activities, stated positions, court challenges or verbal exchanges, that she is more aptly described as a political activist, a person who is a vigorous advocate for a cause. Most Americans cherish the right of free speech and understand the responsibility that the majority has to protect and defend that right. I suggest that anyone who seeks to diminish that right, to intimidate others into silence or submission, need only look in the mirror to know what a bully looks like..."

Netanyahu's speech to United Nations in its entirety.
The BBC cut it off mid-way, but a number of outlets, including The Right Scoop have posted.
A widely praised speech that is notably of a higher caliber than the speech given by President Obama.
Not just that Netanyahu speaks of specific solutions, the man has an inherent ability to command his audience. His strength as a leader and the confidence that seems to come from his battlefield experience inspire trust.
Truly a brilliant speech.

Nitze often captures the balance in the middle that many conservatives crave from liberal values.
Too bad Nitze not only didn't use enough care in choosing an on point headline; meandering along the 'Ayn Rand' path with great content, only to end up with this buzz killer statement is disappointing:

Commissioners Richards, Hatfield and Owsley are to be commended for refusing to give this perennial malcontent yet another platform from which to bully the community. Through the democratic process, the majority of Aspen voters have time and again rejected Marks and Co.’s positions and behaviors, and the commissioners honored their constituents with this decision.
The people of Aspen have done nothing to deserve Marks’ brand of community service. And no, Marilyn, we don’t even want you to volunteer on the Noxious Weed Board, although the childhood rhyme “takes one to know one” does spring to mind. How many times, and in how many ways, must we tell you that we don’t want you involved in our city government?....."

We have been saturated with housing inventory for a lot longer than just a year.
And yet there's always a new affordable development on the table that gets higher consideration by the powers that be than projects that would bring jobs and put stronger cash flow back into the community.
Such irony those same powers that be disregard the commons needs for the most basic of assistance programs and continually push the cost of living ceiling higher.
Not to mention there are few to no jobs except the ones paying less than a living wage.
By all means, Mayor Mick.
Let's just keep forcing every development to build "affordable" housing and pushing those out-of-reach, not needed projects like Burlingame.

They bring years of complex work to our municipal leaders. Just to get the structure in place.
The only benefit they bring to state revenues is through sales tax. They bring nothing beneficial to our business friendly efforts because they cannot bank, they can't buy insurance, support businesses that are neighbors will not work with them because they can't afford to get caught up in the battle over legalities. They can't rent space and pump revenue into our commercial core.
And we haven't even started on the long list of social problems such as law enforcement and effects on our youth.
We repeat ourselves by saying that until the Feds and the State get the legalities worked out, there should be a complete stop, a moratorium on all marijuana based businesses.
We simply cannot financially carry these businesses any longer.

....It is far easier to say what is pleasing to the ear than what is true. Even so, anyone who thinks Republicans are stupid is missing the point. What those dummies Bush and Perry have in common, other than having been Texas governors, pilots and cheerleaders (what is it with Texas?), is that they're not stupid at all.
This doesn't mean they're right about everything or even most things. But they're smart enough to know that most people in this country didn't go to Ivy League colleges — or any college for that matter. Most haven't led privileged lives of any sort, but nonetheless have unspoiled hearts and are willing to help any who would help themselves.
This is the essence of the so-called ordinary American. Self-reliant, individualistic, entrepreneurial, neighborly and strong. These people come in both Republican and Democratic flavors, though we've somehow lost sight of that in these hyper-partisan, sound-bite times.
Until someone emerges to remind Americans of who they are in a way that neither insults their intelligence nor condescends to their less- fortunate circumstances, smart money goes to the “stupid” politicians, who are dumb as foxes and happy as clams when their opponents misunderestimate them...."

One of the things SandBox likes about 'The Hill' is the trolls (yes, kids, we're all trolls. The goal is to be a good troll) who frequent that forum generally run a good dialog. There are some good comments on this piece by Pete Kasperowicz. Check 'em out.

The Pueblo Chieftain and the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel are where one goes to take the political pulse of Colorado.
The Denver Post and The Colorado Independent, to most Coloradans, are more where you go to find out the spin, hyperbole, daily trash talk and have a good laugh when Colorado's political atmosphere is hot.
The old war horse Chieftain pegged this race for 10th Judicial District DA as one that would probably set in the record books as an all-out fight to the last vote.
Sure enough, it's shaping up to be exactly that.
And we still have over 13 months to go.
"..And Thiebaut disputes Chostner's claim that the city's crime rate is twice the state's, noting that former Police Chief Jim Billings said the statistics from that study were based on flawed data.
Finally, Chostner said a recent controversy in the murder trial of David Anthony Carrillo is emblematic of his criticism of how Thiebaut's office handles cases.
"Here's a case where he's not giving discovery in a timely manner," Chostner said. "That's the kind of mismanaging of cases I'm talking about."
Thiebaut's office has been accused by Carrillo's public defender of failing to disclose and possibly covering up a memo from a police detective that suggested a report by another officer at the crime scene was false.
Thiebaut maintains that there was no discovery violation. The memo was handed to Carrillo's defense team the day before a preliminary hearing and he continues to claim Public Defender Adam Schultz is trying to force a favorable plea deal for his client.
Thiebaut also claims there are ethical considerations about commenting on or trying to influence an ongoing case that Chostner, as an attorney, should know about.
Thiebaut laments that his office doesn't seem to be given the credit for high-profile victories in court, including a conviction of the so-called "Ether Man" — Robert Howard Bruce — for trying to kill a Pueblo police officer, and the conviction of Paul Wayne Stark for raping and killing 14-year-old Ashley Patterson of Pueblo West..."

Think of the massive festive crowd at the gondola on a powder day filled with people selling burritos, listening to Mexican radio. The town would come to a complete stop. It’s already bad enough getting a fresh line after 10:30 a.m. It seems like the mountains get chewed up more quickly now on a powder day. And not to mention one beginner snowboarder can do the same damage as four expert skiers to a field of freshies...
...Do whatever it takes to get a ski pass. Make a deal with the devil. I have his number if you need it..."

"Future historians are likely to look back on this week as the period Obama passed the point of no return for his presidency, and they may identify today, September 16, as the single most important day in his undoing. I wonder if Obama has any clue that his presidency is collapsing in real time? Dumb question: of course he doesn’t.
Yes, I was obviously playing around with my post earlier today on “Operation Chaos,” but then something deeply serious occurred here in Washington that I didn’t notice until the evening news: 36 Senators from both parties held a big press conference calling on the debt ceiling supercommittee to “go big” with sweeping pro-growth tax reform—one that would slash deductions and lower rates dramatically. In particular, I was struck by Oregon’s Sen. Ron Wyden, a smart liberal, who cited the 1986 Reagan-tax reform that he said created millions of jobs. He may not be correct strictly speaking about the job creation bit, but that misses the point:
"This press conference was not meant for the supercommittee. It was meant for Obama."

"...Yet the reality is that these lofty job creation projections are wrong, as detailed in last month's New York Times story “Number of Green Jobs Fails to Live Up to Promises.” The Times concluded, ”such numbers are a pipe dream” because, as they've previously reported, wind power costs 50 percent more than conventional power, and solar-generated electricity costs up to three times more than wind power. Shifting resources toward less-efficient purposes inevitably results in less prosperity — fewer jobs at lower pay.
Furthermore, in order to compete, renewable energy sources require costly government subsidies, price floors or purchase mandates. Consequently, green policies actually increase energy prices, undermine the economy, destroy jobs and hurt consumers, especially the poorest whose family budgets are consumed by escalating costs for everything. Exacerbating things further, energy prices increase when potential suppliers and energy entrepreneurs redirect scarce capital away from government-manipulated markets.
For these reasons, renewable energies produce only 3 percent of U.S. electricity and remain a fledgling global industry, despite having enjoyed enormous government support in the U.S., Europe and China. Given the industry's small size and inherent unviability, allowing China to subsidize production to remain the lower-cost manufacturer is logical and prudent.."

"Colorado Attorney General John Suthers will be visiting towns in Northwest Colorado next week to discuss crime — specifically, scams and fraud in the state.
Suthers is scheduled to speak in Craig and Steamboat Springs on Monday, and Meeker, Rifle and Eagle on Tuesday.
A public meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday at The Center of Craig, 600 Yampa Ave.

"The head prosecutor of the 9th Judicial District Court is backing the Aspen attorney’s office after a local judge handed down sanctions against it, alleging infractions in handling pretrial evidence and discovery.
District Attorney Martin Beeson said he is assisting Aspen prosecutors in filing an appeal to the Colorado Supreme Court. The appeal asks for a rule to show cause for sanctions levied by Pitkin County District Court Judge Gail Nichols in August. Beeson said the court’s actions were “arbitrary, unreasonable and unfair.”
“I am baffled by the court’s actions and the words that have come down from the bench,” Beeson said. “We believe the judge is completely wrong.”
Nichols punished the Aspen prosecutor’s office on Aug. 22 by suppressing evidence in an aggravated motor vehicle theft case. She cited five cases in the past four years in which Chief Deputy District Attorney Arnold Mordkin has “repeatedly shown that he does not accept responsibility for insuring compliance with [evidence] rules and avoiding further ... violations...”

"I had the distinct pleasure of watching the GOP candidates debate, and I learned something shocking. They are not, despite the New York Times propaganda, crazy. They are diverse, intelligent constructs of a party that allows for free thought, unlike dogmatic liberalism I now renounce. But fair warning, I am Pro God, which by liberal definition means I force Him into the faces of others. I am against 12 year olds signing off on their own abortions, which means I despise women. I believe Herman Cain agrees with my beliefs on minority empowerment, so he too must be a racist. Even the now wilted specter of Michelle Bachmann, successfully castrated by a viciously sexist question in the previous debate, was not any sort of boogeywoman. What we had was an intelligent thoughtful exchange of ideas. Some of these ideas may not work, and others have merit. Cain’s thoughts on taxation I found intriguing but impractical, but hey, at least it was an idea. A freaking idea. But wait, other ideas reared their head as well. Ideas like using military drones to track illegals, (Governor Perry) support of a guest worker program (Speaker Gingrich) and of course there was Mitt. Poor Mitt. He would have been a great 60′s Republican. Today he would be better off as a Democrat. But he is a good fella and a smart man, so he has a place. Just not in the White House..."

We could care less who you are, what your IP is or what you want to call yourself.
There is absolutely no relevance, except personal gratification and ego stroking for anyone from journalists to elected officials to powerful people who want revenge, in our knowing that kind of personal data on an avatar in commentary.
In our area, there is also the documentation of actual harm coming into lives of the people who speak up over local issues; we care a lot more about protection of those brave voices than we do for the perpetrators that cause the harm.
SandBox goes to lengths in order to protect the anonymity we hold in trust for others. The many, many identities we have come to know has come about because they are people who are of strong enough moral character to find out the truth and then allow their own personal trust grow. To us, protecting their trust is sacred.
In our view, the only thing that matters publicly is the validity of the comments they make.
That is one of the reasons why SandBox Nanny uses the highly effective tool of posting news that has already been made. It is impossible for even the very powerful to retract either the truth once it has happened (or) disinformation spun by an agenda to hide those truths. When we first started SandBox in July of 2010, we were stunned at how often Swift Communications reporters, editors and publisher not only checked in on SandBox Commentators but used every keyword search imaginable attached to their names. Over a year and a half later, we are astounded at how persistent they are in still tracking themselves....
The hostility towards us back then was not only palpable, it was shocking. 'Somebody' did not like the little guys empowering themselves in defense.
As the false stories and disinformation grew stronger in their Members Hub, the banning and censoring increased to the point of literally banning local authorities and professionals who are avatars, while the editorial staff at the PI claimed these anonymous souls they were banning were 'imposters'. (whisper...whisper...not to mention what an oxymoron the PI's choice is....whisper...whisper... "ban" "anonymous imposters"??!... what's up with that....whisper...whisper..)
How incredible is it, in this day and age, that any "professional" in the business of public relations and also in the service of trust to the public would act, in very public ways, like they were still in high school and either believe or participate in anything unverified and also so morally reprehensible?
By letting individuals like that, who have no qualms rolling around on such levels (especially effective when allowed to collectively reveal their personal choices) simply continue to reveal themselves; we rose to rapid popularity and success with SandBox Commentators.

There has been no halt to the manipulation of public opinion by those angered at us for not cowering back into submission. That manipulation is still out there and being done now to legal authorities. Eventually, as the sticks get bigger and the staying of the course gets tougher and higher up in legal authority, they will be stopped permanently.
Until then, we take pride in seeing the steady increase of voices raised against all kinds of things.
Like openly confronting a bully named John Colson.

We could care less who you are, what your IP is or what you want to call yourself.
There is absolutely no relevance, except personal gratification and ego stroking for anyone from journalists to elected officials to powerful people who want revenge, in our knowing that kind of personal data on an avatar in commentary.
In our area, there is also the documentation of actual harm coming into lives of the people who speak up over local issues; we care a lot more about protection of those brave voices than we do for the perpetrators that cause the harm.
SandBox goes to lengths in order to protect the anonymity we hold in trust for others. The many, many identities we have come to know has come about because they are people who are of strong enough moral character to find out the truth and then allow their own personal trust grow. To us, protecting their trust is sacred.
In our view, the only thing that matters publicly is the validity of the comments they make.
That is one of the reasons why SandBox Nanny uses the highly effective tool of posting news that has already been made. It is impossible for even the very powerful to retract either the truth once it has happened (or) disinformation spun by an agenda to hide those truths. Actually, the tactic is one that has been around since the time of Sun Tzu. Move swiftly through unprotected ground.
What we do track are search phrases that find us. Keywords. Analytics.
When we first started SandBox in July of 2010, we were stunned at how often Swift Communications reporters, editors and publisher not only checked in on SandBox Commentators but used every keyword search imaginable attached to their names. Over a year and a half later, we are astounded at how persistent they are in still tracking themselves....
The hostility towards us back then was not only palpable, it was shocking. 'Somebody' did not like the little guys empowering themselves in defense.
As the false stories and disinformation grew stronger in their Members Hub, the banning and censoring increased to the point of literally banning local authorities and professionals who are avatars, while the editorial staff at the PI claimed these anonymous souls they were banning were 'imposters'. (whisper...whisper...not to mention what an oxymoron the PI's choice is....whisper...whisper... "ban" "anonymous imposters"??!... what's up with that....whisper...whisper..)
How incredible is it, in this day and age, that any "professional" in the business of public relations and also in the service of trust to the public would act, in very public ways, like they were still in high school and either believe or participate in anything unverified and also so morally reprehensible?
By letting individuals like that, who have no qualms rolling around on such levels (especially effective when allowed to collectively reveal their personal choices) simply continue to reveal themselves; we rose to rapid popularity and success with SandBox Commentators.
